I probably should keep my thoughts to myself, but I won’t. Everyone has a shot to play at Clemson and I’ll leave it at that. It’s one of the reasons I keep coming back. See, the NFL is like that to a certain degree, but college and high schools are often not.

A whole lot of political and socioeconomic lobbying and jockeying goes on in high school, who's got connections with the coach or A.D. or mayor or you name it. Less of it in college, but much of what determines playing time and even recruiting is so much bigger than "who can produce." This or that kid will get recruited because a service lists him highly and a coach would be a fool to pass him over. Sometimes it's not even about that kid but the next kid in the "pipeline" or in the family (perhaps the reason we held on so long to DJ Uiagalelei, just to get his brother).

Sometimes the coaches will roll with player A because he was a four-star recruit instead of playing a preferred walk-on that was a two-star. Or a new position coach inherits player B and chooses to give player C more snaps because he was "his" guy. But nobody said life was fair.

So true. I have a friend that didn’t play football in high school because he didn’t like the coach and the friend was correct. I had no choice and had to play because my dad said so and I didn’t like his fists in my face.
The friend went to a major college who was a hotter commodity then than right now. He came in with no experience or connections and since he was a better athlete than most worked his way up to 2nd string DE. The said school recruited one of the very best classes in the country and this was before all the services, but little ole geeky me had already been following recruiting before it was a thing and it was harder then
The school automatically moved the new top recruits ahead of my friend and the friend got pissed and quit. He truly regretted that later, but that’s part of the way it all works.

Politics, racial and other issues play into the mix. That doesn’t seem to happen as much here.

Glad to see Denhoff is making strides and hope Patterson gets that competitive fire he needs. If I read it right it seems odd Patterson was 6th rated DE and 97th overall player, while Denhoff was 8th rated DE yet ahead of Patterson as 89th overall player.

I love coaches' confidence P-Woo "wherever they line him up"

Sounds like Woods may outproduce the guys leaving for the NFL. As for Denhoff, he may be passing Mascoll by as Mascoll has had many years to make an impression.
