This was a spot I had advocated Dabo’s staff to go into the portal and entice the former Alabama top RB recruit ,Trey Sanders, back in ‘19 and the #16 best HS National recruit that year to come to Clemson and compete against Shipley for the starting RB position. Meanwhile, TCU has picked him now to keep their well-oiled machine rolling.

TCU has a well-oiled machine now? I suspect they will have 3+ losses next year. They had way too many close calls to say they are now a perfectly operating machine.

Dugan was a monster and won a lot of games for them late in games. Could have easily lost 3 this year. Great college QB but don't see him in the pros. Good offense but that b12 defense was suspect all year. That fella is a good running back.

3? Try 5 or 6. TCU was crap and they should never have been in the playoffs or the title game. Michigan clearly took them lightly and that was a mistake, but even then TCU got all the breaks and all the refs calls. Stupid refs gave TCU every call all year long and they will lose a lot next season without that punk Duggan carrying their butts.

It appears that, under Coach Goodwin, linebacker is easier to pick up than it was under Venables and Coach Goodwin is more trusting of his players to play them. Dabo had to prod Coach V during his tenure here to play more guys.

The reason we've had so many RB's hit THE GD PORTAL is the same reason we can't get a RB from THE GD PORTAL.
We whiffed on recruiting high school RB's to come in behind Shipley and Mafah. No RB worth a crap is coming to us from THE GD PORTAL to be 3rd string.

away from being capable of beating UGa.
I am curious though - who are all these elite RBs in the portal, and which of our running backs are we going to move out of a starting role of significant snaps for a guy who is quitting his previous team?
Again, portal kids aren't in the portal because they wish buried on a depth chart. They're not moving to be backups, as that's the reason they're quitting their current school.
The portal is not the be all to end all. We need a QB, and everything changes. Everything. Looks like we found a QB.

or next year could be a disaster at that position. At least we have a great running-blocking offensive line, oh wait....
Seriously though, this position group has been horribly mismanaged. It would have been better not to offer fall-backs for two years and use the portal.

should go after an RB quitting his team because he was buried on the depth chart in order to be buried on another depth chart?
When are some of you guys gonna figure out the portal isn't for adding depth? It's for plugging immediate holes.

Ship and Mafah are as tough as they come and will get yards. I miss the take it to the house speed that a CJ or Etienne had and think that is one of the things that has held us back the last couple of years.

I wouldn't say Clemson can't recruit a top running back. Bowman was a 5 star and Shipley a 4/5 star so they were in high demand. When we got commitments from them our RB room was as good as we have seen under Dabo (Etienne, Melusi, Pace, Dukes, Dixon).
Fast forward to 2023 and we have only two veteran RB's and can't seem to attract any big names. It is painfully obvious there has been a big shift in the wrong direction in RB recruiting.

just sign on and hope to displace an entrenched starter.
We lost Melusi and to a lesser degree Lyn J Dixon to the reality that Shipley and Mafah were a cut above. I think we lost Melusi because Dixon appeared to be the odds on starter and then Dixon left because he saw the writing on the wall with Shipley and Mafah. Now we lost Kobe Pace for similar reasons.
Now that both Shipley and Mafah are upper-classmen, we will probably see the window of opportunity open for attracting a top RB or two.
But, the current environment almost guarantees that if you have a solid starter at a given position, you will not be attractive to portal players with any level of talent. We have been 2-deep at starting RB for two seasons. If we had courted and signed a legit starter from the portal last year, almost certainly Mafah or Shipley would have left us.

Against UT, we threw the ball 56 times and ran 45 times. That's great balance.
We will continue to attack defenses as a need arises. Balance is always the goal, but you need a good/great passing game to compete in today's game.
Some guys complain, thinking, "we ###### games and don't waver". That's not true. We've adjusted as needed every game, save perhaps the coot game. Coaches readily admitted (in hindsight) we maybe should have run more. But other than that, we've done great adjust as needed and/or call plays based on capabilities and the other team's weakness. We'll do what we need to do, and that's what matters.

Which is a shame, because Mafah is a better back than Shipley. Mafah would be a world-beater at a place like UGA or Alabama with a great offensive line. Shipley has more explosiveness, but he is kind of the poor man's ETN.

If you read TNet archives from the time you would see that our OL was considered mediocre at best.
Those making judgements from the cheap seats were totally convinced that our guys were weak and ill-coached.
And yet we went 15-0.
Players like Etienne made the OL much more effective, and a QB like TL with top receivers made keying on the running game impossible.
Personally, I think our OL right now is as talented and deep as it’s ever been in the past 20+ years.
We have suffered from lack of really outstanding players at the skill positions beginning with QB, but extending through WR. The RBs, while not as good as Etienne, are certainly much more than adequate when coupled with a legitimate passing threat.

Have an as good, if not better Najee Harris prototype on the team ripping off 6 yards a clip and only gets 7 touches, zero passes against a weak run stop SCar team... in what universe does your offense coordinator NOT use that to your advantage to win a game. And we wonder why we can't ink a good back to be 3rd string.

We shouldn't ever have to have an emergency relief at any position bc there are enough scholarships to fill every position when scholarships are given to useable players that are talented enough to play top D-1 power 5 FB. If a player has been at Clemson for more than season and never seeing the field except in mop up duty, that is an absolutely waisted scholarship that Dabo should rid the team of, or let those players know up front that their scholarships are subject to be given to a player that can play 2nd or 3d string!!!

Mellusi starring at Wisconsin is a huge stretch there. He was the back up last season to a sophomore and Wisconsin was so average that they fired their coach and brought in Cincinnati's Luke Fickell. He was average, at best.
