Tim Bourret was wrong again.

In the postgame last night, he said that was the highest ranked team Clemson had beat since we beat #2 Duke in 1994.
I thought I remembered Larry Shyatt beating #1 UNC one year. So I looked it up. And we did. In 2001.

Overrate him a bit. People act like he’s the only one in the country who does that. Basically every school has their own version of Tim Bourret. SIDs nationwide love their stats

I have to agree with T_I_P. TB is a goat in his profession, but Jim Phillips knew a lot too, as has many across the country. I applaud anyone like TB that can keep and retain info like that.

I've listened to The Audible podcast with Bruce Feldman and Stewart Mandel for the last decade, and the only time I've ever heard them really talk about an SID is when Tim Bourret retired. These are two guys who have been a part of the CFB media since the late 90s, and they were absolutely gushing over what a great guy Tim is, what a fantastic job he had done at Clemson, and how he was just a beloved figure in the industry.
Even if he's not the only guy that's good at pulling stats, anyone that's held in such high regard by his peers must be pretty special. Just my 2 cents.

I shouldn’t have used the word “overrate”. I just meant that I’ve ran into Clemson people who seem to think he is the only one in the country doing that.
I worked at 3 different athletic departments that had their own long term SID who knew all the stats and everyone called “the GOAT”.
Obviously they were not as tenured as Bourret though so I do understand why he is well respected.

its a short list that are as good or better. and I agree, each school has 1-2 guys that are stat geniuses.
He may miss a fact every so often, but his ability to recall a story about a game decades ago absolutely sets him apart from most other SID's. Last night he spoke about the first year that a technical foul counted against the five maximum personal fouls, and I think Sharone wright got hosed, and Wayne Buckingham ended up playing close to career minutes and we snagged the win.
And his story about watching Duke in Providence while he was home on Christmas Break. Duke had one shot, and Tim found Bill foster and told him the exact play Duke used against the Friars, and we were prepared for it.
He is also transparent, ive sent him a few unique stats that have made it into the game notes. seems grateful and appreciative. iIv'e seen some terrific lists - like a Clemson Basketball and a Clemson football win in the same day, but they were missing a game or two and when notified he notes it.
I would have loved to be z fly on the wall in Tim Bourett and Mark Packers rental house when they roomed together.
I guess I am a sucker for odd stats, and probably if I had to do it all over again would have thrived in an SID or media role.

And agree. I actually considered going into SID work myself. But unfortunately the hours are long and the pay is horrible. Athletic departments have no qualms giving six figures to football addendum positions but SIDs get crumbs, even at the big schools.

Well, I'm not going to call out the GOAT Tim Bourret because I didn't hear what he said or in what reference.
That said, imo, the greatest game we ever played was beating #1 Duke in 1980. It was more rowdy than last night. Imo, it's the greatest team we've ever had... and look at the players on the Duke team. Legendary.
Last night was fantastic, but I'll always say that 1980 night is the gold standard. Sorry young folk.

Back in 80, we were allowed to sit in aile steps which meant that Duke game greatly exceeded capacity. Pissed off the fire marshall as I recall, but worth it!

I was about 4 row off the court in the student section of that game.
Looking across the court - with the fans in the aisles, it was a solid wall of people. Awesome experience.

Set the record for the largest crowd in the history of Littlejohn Coliseum.
The largest crowd at Littlejohn Coliseum was 13,864 people on January 9, 1980. This crowd attended a men's basketball game between the Clemson Tigers and Duke

You are dead wrong. We lost both games to them in the 01-02 season. We split games with them in the 02-03 season. With our win coming at home. Tim is right again.

And definitely on the day Earnhardt died! I remember thinking then...dang, one of our biggest wins ever and no one nationally heard about it because of the tragedy of Earnhardt's death!

Shyatt (1-14), Purnell (1-13) and Barnes (1-11) all had ONE top five win at Clemson. Those were the days.
