Tigers in France

Aug 11, 2022, 5:43 PM

I've been to France several times on rugby tours. If you're in the parts of France that care about rugby, it's a big deal. The old Medical College of Georgia team (now Augusta Rugby Club) had a coach from Biaritz so it was always our first stop. The local rugby club rented their worst fields to the local soccer club and also owned a golf course. It's a wonderful place, but as I said, they take their rugby, even their old boys rugby seriously.

We were warned before hand by our coach that our hosts would split us up and take us to an early lunch to get us stuffed and drunk before the game. My wife and I went out with a family. He had a glass of wine, so I had one. He had another, so did I... and so on. After a while, using a phrase book I asked him if he could play like this. "Oh no, I don't play anymore and by the way, it's now 3:30, we'll need to rush to make the 4:00 kickoff." It's really easy to spend 3 hours over a meal in France... anyway, I showed up in the locker room stuffed and drunk... as was everyone else on my team.

On another trip we played in Cognac. We were drinking in a Cognac distillery at 3am on a Wednesday morning and my host, who spoke english, told me "when you live in Cognac, you must drink Cognac and when you drink Cognac you do not go to work on time. I'm glad I live in 'Murica but France is a very nice place to visit ESPECIALLY when you're being hosted by locals.

How would say it compares with Myrtle Beach overall?
