Where we would be if we could shoot free-throws

Jan 20, 2015, 9:33 AM

This a good basketball team that is very bad at shooting free-throws. We rank #276 in free-throw-percentage. To put that in perspective, if we shot free-throws as well as the top free-throw shooting teams, we would have scored an additional 51 points so far this season. That translates to approximately 3 more wins. Given our schedule, at 13-5 we would have an RPI in the low-30's or higher with that record. Even if we were just shooting free-throws as well as we did last season, we would have 29 additional points and 2 more wins.

WOW. It is so frustrating to me to watch this team work so hard and then be so bad in that critical area. It raises my BP another 40 points watching this. I thought we were getting better at this over the last couple of years.

THUS, from now on, everybody shoots 100 free throws a day

Jan 20, 2015, 9:42 AM

at this level, foul shots should be automatic

in sets of 10. Suicides for each one missed. That way you will know how it feels later in the game. Just like we had to do at the high school level. This is horrible for D-1

You know your BB team is in serious trouble when they consistently can't shoot decent percentages on the home floor.

Think we

could get the women to come over and teach the guys how to shoot FTs? Not sure how they've done for the year, but they hit 77% their last game.
I know it's driving BB (and the fans) crazy.
Go Tigers!!

We would be spending more time talking about fields instead of this. That's where we would be. Puzzling on the free throws, at home even. They shoot on these rims every day.

This is an average team that is bad at free throws. Yeah the free throws would be nice. But that doesn't change that our offense is horrendous. BB is gonna have to cave and find someone that can put the ball in the hoop even if it means sacrificing some defense.

IF YOU WILL REMEMBER WE LEAD THE ACC IN FT % LAST YEAR. THIS YEAR HAS BEEN VERY DISAPPOINTING TO SAY THE LEAST.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

wonder what the difference is from last year?

Jan 20, 2015, 11:23 AM

ended the year tied for 43rd with .737

historically, Clemson would be much more highly considered in basketball than it is currently simply because the win total would be much higher. And, believe it or not, its psychological. You kinda understand about kids that are late to the game of basketball and are just learning being inconsistent from the line, but we've had many kids in the past who were solid free throw shooters in HS and got worse after landing on campus. Not sure why. Every coach we've ever had has stated publicly they work on ft shooting daily.

Clemson has traditionally been in the bottom quarter of the conference in free throw shooting and looks to be continuing that effort this season.

FT shooting is not some body part

Jan 20, 2015, 11:52 AM

that you graft in, and now you're better. It's part of the players' ability and can't be separated.
That's kind of like saying in football: if our players were all faster, or baseball - if only our players could hit more home runs.

This is part of the continuous silly logic that we see people putting out here - most of whom don't understand the game.
