Thoughts on State of Baseball Program

Apr 16, 2021, 12:56 PM

I am always one of the last to throw shade at coaches and try to hold off on the "Fire X coach" talk. So with that in mind I really believe that Monte Lee can turn the program into what we are all used to seeing. This will be his 5th season ( not counting last year), and I know that pitching depth had fallen considerably in Jack's last years, but I don't think it is too early to question the way we are coaching our pitchers. Pitching has been very spotty and at best shaky in the best of times. I remember Dabo had Clemson's first losing season in a while and he revamped with different coordinators and the rest is history. I have very little hope that this year will end with a positive result based on performance through half the season, and with that in mind... I believe that Monte needs to get a new pitching coach and hitting coach and maybe rethink overall philosophy. What are the other members thoughts.. Have you completely lost faith in Monte.. or do you think a new staff can fix the problem.. Provided Monte is open to the idea. I feel like he will have to do something this year and can't settle for the status quo.. Thoughts on that?

Monte appears very stoic standing in the dugout. I believe he needs to be more animated to fire up his team. Perhaps moving to the third base coaching box would serve that purpose.

I think that if coach Lee can't get our baseball to a top 5 program with what he has, or the way that he is doing things, then he needs to make changes with what he's doing, even if that means getting rid of assistants, and finding the right assistants that he will need to get our Baseball program back to a top 5 program as Clemson Baseball once was. If he can't make those changes, maybe it's time that the necessary changes be made by the administration. In college sports, things is just that simple when things aren't heading in the right direction. And no one can say that coach Lee hasn't had enough time, bc he has. It's time for coach Lee to chit or get off the pot, bc it's not working out the right way!!!

I agree with you as well, and meant to say that in the original post. If Monte is not willing to make the changes necessary then he needs to go. I hope he can see what they are doing is not working and is willing to take a long hard look at the program and be honest about changes that need to be made.

Maybe the AD should require him to fire the pitching coach.

That always works out well.

Being a fundamentally sound Baseball Program would help

but we will get a better idea tonight on the AACN @ 7 against Miami.

But i suspect it will be more of the same.

I agree with needing to change pitching and hitting coaches. It is obvious these are 2 of the weakest areas of the team. However, fundamental baseball apparently needs coaching too. Base running and errors are a constant problem. Monte could be like Tommy Bowden and not willing to replace coaches.

It seems like we are all on the same page. I appreciate the responses, and hope to hear from more of you. I don't have a lot of Tiger friends around here to ask, and was curious to know the general opinions out there. As was said earlier, a lot will be learned tonight at Miami. Go Tigers.

I didn't mention this before but one of you did. The talent recruiting wise has been what I would consider strong and certainly strong enough to be better on the field than what it is now.. I believe I saw that 2021 class was ranked 10, and 2022 is currently sitting at 15.. so talent hasn't been a problem .. just coaching.

Just to clarify a couple facts. Monte at one time had a top 15 class in 2020 (I think it was top 15) but that's based on committed rankings. By the time last fall rolled around, the kids that actually made it on campus dropped our actual ranking out of the top 25... 28th I think is what I saw. Miami was number 1. First time for ACC in a long time. If I'm not mistaken, DJU was included. He'll never see the bump.

Clemson currently committed class is 10 but Will Taylor and Bubba Chandler really bumped the rankings. Now I pray they make it to campus but neither imo will ever play baseball for Monte. Not now that we need a QB.

It doesn’t matter what is classes are ranked or who comes in. He flat out doesn’t understand fundamentals of baseball or if he does he certainly can’t coach them to the players. We’ve had great talent under Monte (some inherited) and have done absolutely nothing with it. This is another year of a missed regional. ML is just not a good coach for Clemson. Need to decide if we want to try for winning or try to keep a good guy as coach with a third tier program.

Better than most, not as good as some but no team will ever win every baseball game because it is the nature of the game.

are used to seeing us at least compete for the ACC and win regionals. Those things were a given...and every few years we would do a lot more.

No reason we should be so far from it now.

Re: Yes, those of us who have been around a while

Apr 16, 2021, 8:52 PM

My thoughts on state of the program...

We aren’t great at power hitting, hitting for contact, fielding, base running, situational hitting, bunting, and probably a few others I’m missing. Other than that we are a solid team.

What has me ready to fire Monte and tells me he won’t make any improvements here goes back to UpfSC game in extras and we don’t bunt the runners over 1st and 2nd 0 outs. Double play game over. After that doubles down on stupidity saying he would do it again. Good riddance and go find a coach that coaches the fundamentals.

The fact that our team cant bunt is inexcusable, I played baseball 10 years and Could bunt in Dixie youth

Apr 16, 2021, 5:43 PM

One of the reasons fans didn’t like Jack was because he did not recruit in-state players. Now, Monte’s main focus seems to be in-state talent, which is great. These young men really seem to like him and are able to relate to him. I know some players who were gamecock fans, but came to Clemson because of him. Also, the pitching recruits think a lot of See and he’s good with building those relationships.
That said, Monte Lee has to realize that some changes are going to be necessary, if they don’t turn this season around, starting tonight. A hitting coach is needed. Pitching coach? We’ll see. Also, some back to basics baseball is needed, advancing runners, stealing, in field defense needs some help. These are all easily fixable, but Monte has to be the one to see and accept that changes are necessary. If he can’t or won’t do it, he should no longer be head coach.
Hoping tonight that the Tigers get a win and get some momentum!

Michael Roth was considering Clemson bur Leggett pretty much ignored him when he visited--but Coots rolled out the red carpet

Re: Thoughts on State of Baseball Program

Apr 16, 2021, 8:53 PM

South Carolina buried Roth after he got absolutely shellacked in the regular season and he was only pitched in desperation against Clemson in 2010. He was on their team and they had zero confidence in him. They had no idea what they had on their hands so hard to fault Leggett for missing it too.

Apr 17, 2021, 11:49 AM

the fundamentals of baseball. It’s not just this season. It’s been that way for every team under Monte.
I don’t believe Monte should be fired this season but next year he needs to enter the season with his seat scorching hot and the understanding that if he doesn’t right the ship he won’t be captain any longer.

Big fan of the Lee hire, but it’s year 5, and by year 5 you know what you’ve got in a coach. Year five Debo had 2 division titles an ACC championship, and we were regulars in the top 10. We had a winner. By year 5, Brownlee had made no palpable improvements in Men’s BB, and still stuck in mediocrity in year 11. If we don’t make a super regional this year, we know we got, and Lee needs to go. Sports are about winning , not accepting mediocrity
