be too dangerous.....I can see it now....We are down 4 with a minute to go..and we sack a QB on his 15 yard line and the ball pops loose and in an effort to recover the ball our linebacker dives over the Qb and hits him in the helmet with his knee and BAM! Penalty for hitting the defenseless player. Or even worse...their guy dives for the loose ball, but our guy dived a little faster and his shoulder pad hits the other teams player in the helmet in the process of going for the ball. These people that sit around in the offseason and try to CREATE THEIR OWN UNIQUE rule are the same people that sit on Development Boards...JMHO.

Exactly! Like many rules, the intent was good but the realty of enforcement will cause problems.
They were trying to stop players who use a loose ball as an excuse to unload on the ball carrier who's on the ground trying to secure the ball.
The realty is that some official who lacks judgment and common sense will make a call at a critical point of a game that does not reflect the original intent of the rule.
Honestly, was this really a big problem anyway?
Just hope it does not bite us...

and over Time,it was Rarely called Anymore. Targeting became the New penalty and was supposed to cover All Instances of Protecting Defenseless Players. I just think they Clarified the rule to Avoid any Confusion when it's called this Season.

supposed to GO AFTER A FUMBLE....and look out for the defenseless player?...The next change in the rule will be.....If the ball carrier loses possesion of the ball, play will be stopped immediately and the team that had possession at that point will retain possession. Wait and see...just wait and see..

Its the feminization of everything. They are trying to take the "man" out of it all. Why do you think they made up this fake CTE bull? Quite convenient you can only diagnose one with CTE only after you cut their brain out of their head. Seems like a flawed conclusion when you only study those who play physical sports and only after they die. Then again they needed a boogie man to scare ppl from playing a sport that truly helps young boys and men become stronger young boys and men. If you were trying to ruin football tell me you'd do anything different? The last 10 years the NFL has reached out more to women than men. When you feminize something all of a sudden those hard hits are harder to stomach and you might get this mysterious CTE boogie man. What do you expect though from a society that claims playing football is a Right and not a privilege and that football owes something to those who don't have to play if they feel taken advantage of. Just like the game of football though, common sense also is fleeting.

so poorly represented throughout the league? These are questions that Goodell needs to discuss in a public forum. i just hope the NBA does the right thing and grants the ladies equal pay, cause they play just as hard the men. Fair is fair-

Loose balls are the no man's land of the football field. No rules and alot of casualties. No idea how youre gonna flag a dozen dudes all leaping for the ball at once, all coming from different angles and at different speeds. These kind of BS rules make it seem like they really want to give refs yet another way to control the outcome of games. Gonna be ugly the first time a loose ball call changes the outcome of a game.

I think a lot of the blame should be put on teams with coaches and players who were willing to pull the fake injury BS. As usual the fan and the game itself takes the biggest hits.

Isn't it time to revisit the targeting rule and assess how it has helped?

If they cannot point to a statistically significant difference in injuries, then they need to scrap the rule. The intent of the rule is no longer valid, it has results to judge now.
