We don’t have a true rim protector, but we seem to be able to get by without one.

Yes the depth really help us defend. Take a page from how FSU has been so successful under Hamilton the last number of years.

depth also allows us to NOT spend half the game milking the clock on Offense, and actually establishing some sort of identity and rhythm.

With the way today's college basketball is played and called, you don't really need one...at least not nearly to the extent that one was wanted in the past.

With the use of the restricted area/arch and the increased number of charges (point of emphasis for officials), it's very difficult for drivers to consistently get inside 8-10 feet anyways. Not to mention the increased number of three point tries across all levels. Centers are smaller than ever before and have to be able to defend 18 feet from the basket for much of the game as well (guarding guys like Simms).
