This likely will come as a surprise

Mar 16, 2022, 7:14 PM

To many of you basketball experts, and Clemson has a plethora of them, but Coach K. Really wasn’t the coach credited with Dukes rise to the top. Coach Foster was actually the coach who began their rise to the top. K certainly kept it going.

Actually, wasn't it Vic Bubas?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

indeed it was Bubas

Mar 16, 2022, 7:37 PM

took them to 3 final fours in the '60s

but they had some ups and downs after he retired in'69

Bubas was only 42 when he retired from coaching. He then became an administrator at Duke and later became the head of the Sun Belt Conference. I’ve never seen an explanation of why he retired from coaching at such an early age.

But he kept them up for many decades which was very impressive.

That is simply amazing. Honestly, it’s something we all should reflect upon

Now back to why you have battered wife syndrome in relation to Clemson basketball

Bill Foster left Duke to go to South Carolina if I remember correctly. He was not successful thereafter.

One can only wonder why?

Well, I'm no expert, but it

does surprise me. Foster averaged a19-11 record in his 6 seasons, and finished 12 games under .500 in ACC play. I wonder who is crediting him with their success.

Maybe he's trying to imply that the coach that follows Brad Brownell will get all the glory for our achievements that follow while poor Brad will be relegated to relative obscurity. Foster did lead Duke to a title game appearance in '78 though so, so the parallels to date are pretty far apart.

Foster took over a program that was 36 - 42 the previous three seasons. He re- energized the Blue Devils that had fallen into mediocrity for a few years . Bubas was the early coach at Duke who had great success but after he left the program went downhill. Both were exceptional. And the Tigers Bill Foster was a good one too! He was a delightful coach to be around. Always had a good joke!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He finished 2nd, 1st, and 5th in his last 3 years at Dook

Mar 16, 2022, 9:12 PM [ in reply to Well, I'm no expert, but it ]

after an abysmal 3 yr start. In those last 3 yrs, he won 2 ACC Tournaments, a regular season championship, had an NCAA Championship Game appearance, an NCAA Regional Championship, and he was named ACC coach of the year. So, Foster was wildly successful at Dook, and he didn't exactly leave Coach K a program in a shambles.

Not surprising that a Brownell fan doesn’t know who to

credit with Duke’s success.

I’m not a Brownell fan .... I’m a Clemson fan who supports the university and its teams. Try it You might like it,

Not hardly since Duke had losing records in the 2nd and 3rd years K was there.

Bubas built it ...... Waters killed it..... Foster rebuilt it...... K kept it going, in a big way

Geminski, Spanarkle Banks Were big time players . The first of many.

Most knowledgeable basket minds will tell you that Foster was great at building programs. Tells you a lot about being a coach in Columbia doesn’t it.

Go Tigers

It may come as a surprise to many of you but Coach K is a good coach and nothing more. Without handlers and shoe company bagmen he would be just another coach
