This is interesting - inflation related

Stumbled across this article discussing the "shrinkflation" phenomenon in grocery and CPG verticals within the retail and e-comm space.
https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2021/07/06/1012409112/beware-of-shrinkflation-inflations-devious-cousin
After digging into the CPI calculation, I don't see any UOM ($/oz, $/sqft of paper, $/lb, $/bag, etc) discussion for food and miscellaneous grocery items under the basket of goods definition leveraged as a parameter within that calculation.

So I guess my question is...if the cost of Food and Grocery items printed a 2.2% yoy increase from May '20 - May '21^, but the quantity per item sold has been cut by the manufacturer, is there a discrepancy in the overall inflation calculations?
Fwiw, I also challenge that 2.2% print in grocery costs. Based on our spend over the past 12 months, 8% - 10% feels more realistic to me...and no, I'm not sharing my Mint page with you degenerates.

You're probably buying more, over the measured period, if the package is smaller.

Depth on cereal boxes is asinine these days. And bars of soap are not bars anymore. They're curved, and they sell that as being easier to hold. BS. 20% less soap. Same price. Toilet paper rolls are narrower as well. Been going on for a good decade or two.

They put less in the tanks, and raised the price. The prices never came down, and the never put more in the tanks.

Yeah, I think you are right, but it also makes sense that you would end up buying more. Buying more should be reflected in the CPI data, but maybe not...
