These 3 things from Wes gets our D back on track IMO

1. Make Bresee, T. Davis, and the entire Front 4 earn their money. Are you really the best DL in the country or was it really a facade because BV made you look better than you really are by constantly helping you guys out with the blitz in the past? I know we will blitz some, but a dominant Front 4 can stop the run and get to the passer with 4. Make them prove it more.
2. Disguise the blitz better. I don't remember a single blitz getting home Saturday. Give WF credit for their blitz pick up, but clearly they knew who was coming and when they were coming for them to be that successful. Wes needs to self-evaluate some things there regarding disguise so guys can actually come free.
3. Adjust to what's working and not working quicker. We were fortunate during the WF game, but in the future you have to make adjustments within the game quicker. When teams get in a rhythm Offensively things can snowball quickly. Saturday it felt like we were a step behind instead of a step ahead. We should have rushed 4 to see if the DL could get a TFL to put WF behind the chains way before late in the 4th quarter.

They did have way too many 8-9 yard pick-ups so it was 3rd and 1 or 2 way too much. Hope we shut that down a lot better this week.

because of the struggles by the DB's. That's will always open-up some running lanes. If they DB's can't cover any better than they did Saturday, you'll be seeing more of it.

other strange things) is that when the QB and RB move towards the line of scrimmage, it narrows up any gaps that potential blitzers have to get to the QB. This makes it easier for the RB to pick them up, since they pretty much know where that gap is, and they don't have to cover the whole field looking for blitzers coming in.
I really thought our defensive front would be able to cause far more disruption of this offense that we did this time around. As Coach Clausen said, last year, Hartman didn't have time to throw, because our D-line was in his pocket. Wake did a much better job this time around.

This is what drove me absolutely mad on Saturday and I couldn't find a way to explain it so thanks for sharing this.
WF had this almost perfected where the QB and RB would "mesh" right into the back of the interior line then Hartman would take two steps back and fire.
The DL were held up just long enough for him to get the pass off -- Hartman was really good at picking a go to guy quickly and taking advantage of the young secondary.
I think if we had better coverage play like the past few years those quick decisions may have been slightly more delayed and turn into sacks.

The "mesh" offense is similar to the triple option that Paul Johnson ran at GT, at least from a defensive decision-making standpoint. Both offenses are designed to confuse the Defense to buy some extra time for the QB to read the defensive backfield. Hartman is one the best to ever run this system as well as a very accurate passer.
The way we started beating it against GT when BV arrived was the way Oklahoma would beat Nebraska in the late 90s and early 2000s. You hit the QB hard, often, and early. Even if he doesn't have the ball. You do that enough in the 1st half and he'll get rid of ball way quicker in the 2nd half, resulting in poor decisions. It's hard for 5 star elite DBs to cover mediocre WRs for extended periods of time,let alone inexperienced DBs. If you can get in the QBs mind with some hard hits that decision time will diminish. He's going to look to get rid of the ball quicker. This disrupts the timing of the whole play, whether its the blocks for the RB or the WRs getting separation.

Forget 1-3 and get our healthy players back. A front 4 cannot dominate a good team alone.

1 on 1 coverage and press man in the past. He has more experience, but he hasn't exactly excelled in that area either. Maybe Mukuba helps some, but leaving our CBs on an island without help is going to be an issue for us all year. They need to be better but it is clear that we can't spend a large part of the game leaving them without help on the outside. The blueprint is out. Throw it to the WR in 1 on 1 coverage whether they are open or not. Teams now know our guys don't looking for the ball, will panic, and likely interfere.

I agree but I think we need seasoned players back in the secondary for NCST as part of this equation. Leary is nearly as good if not equal to Hartman, and has some good receivers to throw to as well. I don't know that we can score on the Wolfpack as easily as the Deacs, so if we can't do better in coverage we could be in trouble.
