they did away with the rule, where games at Clemson were often stopped by officials due to a rule called "excessive crowd noise".
Boy do I miss that Death Valley.

I may have been drunk at the time, but as someone who spent five glorious years at Clemson from 87-92 …I don’t recall a stoppage of play or warning due to excessive noise.
So I think you are wrong as well.
But then again I may have been passed out which unfortunately happened one Parents Weekend.

Yes, you are correct. The NCAA used to have a rule on crowd noise. They eliminated the rule about 20 years ago.

I think it was in effect in 1978 or 79…which ever year we played Notre Dame in the Valley. They were met with dead silence upon entering the field.

I don’t remember the yes but I do remember stopping playing due to excessive crowd noise. The QB would be trying to change the play, change the snap count or change something blocking scheme etc..
If the crowd got to loud they call an official time out to address crowd noise. It was suppose to be a sportsmanship thing. Then the crowd just got louder.
Those dumb officials were making it worse 😂😂😂

I think 1990 Duke game, year after they upset us in Durham. Danny had to get on PA system and ask the crowd to quiet down.. Always heard Clemson got a noise penalty at a road game as well but not sure who it was against.

As I get older my ability to recall the past is worse, yet the memories better ?

I was in Raleigh vs NC State during the mid 80's.
The Official stopped the game twice. Both times was for the State QB backing away from center and signaling he couldn't hear.
NC State was on the half-yard-line..............it was the Clemson crowd that stopped the game.

and late in that game we needed a stop after Duke had tied it. We got so loud the qb signalled he couldn;t hear and the ref stepped in to stop play.
We got louder.
That was the day I fell in love with Clemson football.
That was a short-lived rule because everytime it was enforced, crowds got louder (duh) so it didn't work.

I was at Clemson from 74 to 78 and it was a rule. Stopping play just made it louder. Go Tigers!

At one time it was also a penalty after a couple of warnings.
It was funny when Clemson fans at Duke were making too much noise and Duke got penalized.

100% true. I remember that happening in Death Valley on several occasions. I remember one particular game where every time they stopped play, the crowd just got louder.

Can't find any clemson clips, but I do know about the famous time in the silverdome it got called. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc9Eii21hyE
It's what happens when the working man gets pushed out of the building and only the ol wine and cheese crowd can afford to go. Ugha also suffering a similar decline in atmosphere last couple times I've been out there. (same issues with wine and cheese crowd combined with non stop music pumped in instead of the band playing)
The Coots have a program where their young alums get a discount to buy season tickets. I wish we'd do something similar. Or I'll always push for more student ticketing especially now that we've forced an athletics fee on them.
Get rid of the scalpers who only buy a massive allotment of tickets to sell em all. Other schools have made this step, (michigan had a guy who was buying/selling millions of dollars worth of tickets every year for a company based out of north carolina) I'm not sure if Clemson has. Ticketmaster is full of leaches.
