Shohei got his 1,000th hit today. A go-ahead HR. Along with 633 career strikeouts as a pitcher, he is the first player since Babe Ruth to have 1,000 hits and 500 Ks
Appreciate every opportunity you get to see him on TV. This is the best player ever. There is no doubt.

I hate to say it as a braves fan but he’s special for sure. Hope the Braves take every ring from him but he’s no doubt an MVP.

You'll find out that is severe fighting words for any Japanese person. They hold themselves at a different standard and they will let you know.

The Japanese put more emphasis on formal manners, calm demeanor in public, adhering to rules, you know…Socialization in its finest form. While the Chinese are more outward and expressive, and less strict to those things I mentioned before. Lots of similarities as well.
And the Chinese culture has become increasingly individualistic. Like American culture, people focus on the better for themselves more so than “the group”. Japanese are still very group oriented.

There are about 1.4 billion Chinese in the world, there is probably a lot of variation. Those living under a communist government for 75’ish years have been forced to conform so a little rebellion by a younger generation with better economic prospects than in decades is probably to be expected.

It's difficult to compare him to a guy that played 100 years before him

He's probably the most talented player I've seen in my lifetime. When healthy he's, at worst, the 2nd best offensive player in the league right now (Judge) and also a top 10 pitcher. He's probably capable of winning a Cy Young if he were to focus strictly on pitching, and we've seen what he can do with the bat when he's in the lineup every day and not also trying to pitch.
But he won't go down as the GOAT because he isn't going to play enough games. Baseball legacy is ultimately about stat compilation, and he just isn't going to end up with enough HRs, wins, etc. He got a bit of a late start on his MLB career and he's also missed quite a few games due to injury and just resting him because he's also pitching.
He's 31 years old and he will probably finish this season around 50 HRs again bringing his career total to 275 or so. He would need to average 40 HRs a year for the next 8 years to reach 600 by the age of 39. I don't think there's much chance of that happening, and I don't think he will get serious GOAT consideration without getting to 600 HRs - even with his pitching accomplishments.

I think an eye test fulfills the argument enough. No player has ever been able to do what he can do, and he is doing it in the modern era of baseball.

bat sound I've ever heard in baseball. I don't know what's special about his bat, but when he hits one 110+ it just sounds different than everyone else - even guys like Cruz and Acuna that are capable of similar exit velos.

His swing path. He’s not an Ichiro type of hitter, but he leads himself out the box as a lefty when he swings. You can notice it if you watch any Japanese pro baseball game.
It’s mostly just his specific swing. It’s obvious he’s got a better one than most players that have ever played.

I was thinking about this the other day and maybe I'm crazy, but when you think about how different pitching is from hitting it is almost like 2 completely different sports. There's a reason why guys aren't great at both and have to pick one or the other.
I think what Shohei is doing is equal to like a guy being a top 5 WR in the NFL while also being a top 10 shooting guard in the NBA. He's one of the greatest athletes in history not just baseball players.
