The Wolfpack and the National Anthem

One thing I'm not looking forward to tonight, and that always makes me cringe at NCSU events, is their fans' disrespect for the National Anthem. From all the talk about how little class NCSU fans have, you might still be thinking that there are some things that are off limits, like blatant disrespect to the USA Anthem, but you'd be wrong. They have two ill-mannered and downright embarrassing practices for those not in the know. 1) the major one that you'll notice is that during the "rockets' red glare", they shout "RED" at the top of their lungs, and 2) they'll often finish by altering the final line to "and the home of the wolfpack".

Having just graduated from NCSU and attending most of the sporting events throughout my college career, I share the same sentiment with you. I think it is extremely rude for them to do and it dishonors the flag, the country and those that have given everything protecting it.
I have emailed AD Debbie Yow before about it, explaining my reasoning and she never responded. I love the Pack but this is one "tradition" that needs to go.

I've been an Orioles fan for as long as I can remember. One of my favorite things was always shouting "O's!" during the National Anthem. I never thought of this as disrespectful as I wasn't doing it to mar the Star Spangled Banner, but to show support for the team.
It's more comparable to the shouting "RED" which I may be okay with. However, changing the words of the song seems different to me.

As an Orioles fan, screw you. Shouting "RED" or "O!"

as words in the anthem are not disrespectful.
As a Caniac I'll shout "YOU SEE" for Jussi Jokinen and "RED" at the proper times.
Changing the word from brave to wolfpack is the only disrespectful act.

I would beg to argue that shouting certain words "at the proper times" to show team or specific player support _is_ disrespectful in the same manner that altering words is. It shifts the focus of the Anthem from demonstrating national recognition and unity by narrowing and redirecting its intent towards something else entirely. The National Anthem is something that should transcend division and team pride allowing all in attendance to have a moment of solidarity.
