The time I talked to Anna Kournikova...

20

Feb 16, 2023, 6:46 PM

Before any of you work yourselves into a lather... it was around 2000-2002, I was in Charleston taking a client out to Applebee's in Mt. Pleasant. As I opened the door to go in, she and her mother were coming out. I held the door for them, and she said thank you. I asked if she was Anna (in my best southern accent)... she replied Anna (in her Russian accent). I told her good luck, she smiled, and that was that.
She and her mother were there for the Family Circle Tennis Tournament.
I know it ain't much, but how many of you can say you actually had a conversation with Anna Kournikova?
Who have y'all ran into just by happenstance?

Gulbis puppies one year back when they had a now defunct "Annika Invitational" LPGA event in Mt. Pleasant, SC. She had hit her drive nearly into the marsh on the right side of a Par 5, and myself and a friend were walking along the paved cart path on that side, minding our own business, when she and her caddie came hustling along, not really paying attention. A catastrophic collision with the puppies was BARELY avoided. I am sure it would have warped (or at least dented) me for life. She apologized, like that was really necessary. I mean, C'mon. My friend almost laughed himself silly. I just had a smile on my face the rest of the day.

Yes, I believe it was. My friend had glommed a couple of

free passes, as he knew the sponsor of the tournament, a well known real estate magnate who later crashed and burned. (That is why that tourney is no more.)

That was also the tourney where, if I am not mistaken, Michelle Wie withdrew with an injury in the middle of a round, rather than shoot a score which may have cost her her tour card. I do remember her having one wrist wrapped with a bandage to about halfway up her lower arm.

I was JUST listening that Michelle Wie story last week. You are exactly right. She quit. Something about posting rounds in the 80s or 90s or being a certain distance back from the cut would cost her the card. When it was evident she was going to have a score so bad, she packed it in and went home.

No one as attractive as Anna!!!

I grew up in Sumter and played Legion Baseball with Ronnie & Robby Richardson . . . Mr Richardson would rag me about not being a Yankee Fan . . . My Dad was a Tiger through and through . . . He had me pulling for Al Kaline . . . We were probably the only Detroit Tiger Fans in S.C., much less Sumter.

Bobby once brought Roger Maris to one of our Legion games . . . Bobby was just one of the Dads . . . But Roger?!!! . . . He was on a pedestal!!! But actually, he acted just like one of the Dads too in our post game chat . . .

I can’t imagine Pro Athletes being that approachable nowadays . . . It was a different world when we were growing up.

Oh . . . I held the rope for Paula Creamer at an LPGA Event in Pinehurst after she had hit her approach shot and her and her caddy rushed to the restrooms adjacent to the fairway . . . Few words were exchanged . . . I said, “Good Luck” as I lifted the rope . . . She giggled which told me she took it as it was intended . . . her caddy thanked me.

I was thinking about starting a thread like this the other day...

I ran into Tony Curtis at a Sushi restaurant in Charlotte. He was in town for a tennis tournament and I think it was in the days of Andre Agassi. The sushi bar had a boat moat that went around and you just selected what plate you wanted. The color of the plate was a price indicator.

So I am there with this girl and the only other people there were Tony Curtis and his wife or Significant other.

They were at the top of the oval and we were on the side. The girl I was with did not realize who he was so I told her. He could hear me and when she said you should go get his autograph I said no that he was having a private dinner and did not need us interrupting their evening. About then the Waitress brought beers we had ordered and I looked up as I was about to sip and he raised his glass and mouthed Thank you. I nodded back and we had a silent toast.

We had our dinner and they had there's and there were a few other interactions just based on the food sailing around. Like "hear comes some uni"

Some fan noticed as they were leaving the hibachi side and the two couples wanted to do the whole OMG its (someone famous) routine.

After that group left he looked over at me and shrugged and I said you gotta do what you gotta do.

He just laughed and said sometimes.

We shared a y'all have a nice evening when we left and that was it.

I've told this story before on TNet, but I'll rehash it again.
I was on a golf trip with some buddies in Myrtle Beach around 1994... we were playing at Legends on Hwy 501. They have a few courses there. My group was making the turn, and I went in the bar to get a beer. I was sitting at the bar waiting on my beer when Lawrence Tayler (probably the best linebacker to ever play the game) sat down next to me. The bartender was a 20 something young lady. He asked her to bring him a drink. She asked what kind. He responded I don't care, and make it a double!!!
I laughed and asked him how his round was going. I told him I was at Clemson with William Perry and the team that beat UNC when they were good. We talked about that stuff for about 5 minutes before we both had to get back on the course.

Re: The time I talked to Anna Kournikova...

Feb 17, 2023, 9:18 AM

I met Deon Sanders and Michael Irvin on consecutive nights in Puerto Rico at the Old San Juan Hotel bar. Deon was first.

I was at the small bar closest to the main entrance and 4 or 5 PR ladies that were all friends were behind me waiting to be able to order. I ended up ordering for them and shuffling drinks over my shoulder to them. A little chit chat and then Deon walks up and his two entourage types sit at a table just over the barrier from the bar. He orders through his flunky who orders through the girls who asked me....drinks shuffled again. Now this is Puerto Rico and that all took about 30 minutes to an hour. Deon gets into a conversation with one of the girls and she goes around and sits at the table with his crew. One of the other girls and I had been talking so when the Deon's spokesperson invites the rest of the ladies they walk around. Then this one girl invites me. We talked a bit (puntarooskie game and his punt return / Dallas etc.)

They all left to go into the dance club but I did not tag along.

The next night I was getting a drink at one of the other bars in the party lobby and Michael Irvin walks up next to me. I mention I was a Dallas fan and he thought it was a fan moment. Instead I said, I am a Clemson grad, welcome to the ACC what do you think about the expansion. He lit up and was wanting to talk about that. SO we did for a few minutes and then he went Hottie hunting.

I think they were both in town for an annual Marlin fishing tournament, because some time after that there was a TV show with the two of them fishing for Marlin

Back in my teen years I worked at a catering center that was holding a golf tournament. As I was entering the service entrance of the course clubhouse with a friend of mine, the fellow in front of me who was also entering, lost his grip on the door handle and abruptly stopped. I bumped into this guy who then turned around. I then realized that I had just bumped into Joe DiMaggio. My buddy who was, and still is, an avid Yankees fan was extremely excited to be in the presence of Joltin Joe. I was however more impressed with having bumped into a husband of Marilyn Monroe's.

I met Willie Nelson playing golf at Carolina Springs

5

Feb 16, 2023, 8:59 PM

about 30 years ago after work. We were on one tee box, and another 4some was nearby standing with their backs to us on another hole. One of my buddies said "Hey, that one guy looks like Willie Nelson". Another friend said "Nah. Look at his legs (he was wearing shorts); that's the legs of a young man. Willie Nelson is OLD!" Turns out they were close enough to hear us, and the "young man" turned around and broke into a big grin. It was indeed Willie Nelson. We rushed over and he signed our scorecard. He was very friendly and was in town to play at the charity shindig Hartness had every year.

I was also a movie extra in a scene with Danny Trejo. He was a prison guard, and I was a convict. It was a shid movie that was never released in theatres called "The Lost Day". Talked to him for quite a while between shots. He was very friendly and down to earth as well. He was really into Tango dancing and was going the next day to some tango contest or event in Texas. The most surprising thing was his size; I'd estimate he's 5'8" at the most.

I did have a great conversation with Matt Lecroy in the left field stands at Pelicans ballpark 8 or so years ago when he was managing the Nationals minor league club and had gotten ejected during the lineup exchange for arguing the bogus call at home plate that ended the previous night's game.

I've talked with Condeleeza Rice a number of times at the Augusta National, starting with when she was on the CFP committee. I asked her about getting Clemson into the CFP and she said "they will have to earn it on the field". I saw her the year after we won the natty and asker her if she remembered me asking her to get the Tigers in the CFP. She said, "yes, and how did they do it". I said "they earned it on the field" and she just smiled and said "I'll say they did"! She is a very approachable and nice lady!

I passed Lauren Holly as I was leaving the men's room while she was approaching the women's room at a Planet Hollywood restaurant in Hollywood. When I sat back down at my table, the people I was with were aghast that I didn't say anything to her but I wasn't even paying attention so I totally missed the opportunity. Turned out she was with Jim Carrey for a private event in another room - this was summer 1998.
