The term "Clemsoning"

May 21, 2015, 3:34 PM

Guys, Did any of you listen to the Sirius / XM College Sports channel yesterday morning? It was the program called "the First Team" with Taylor Zarzor and Greg McElroy. They have been counting down their college football picks from 40 to 1 over the last couple of weeks. Yesterday they picked Clemson as #4 which was awesome. They did 3 picks a day and spent about 30 minutes after each pick explaining why they picked the team at that particular number. They picked Clemson #4 but then spent the better part of 30 minutes beating us up. They kept using the terms "pulling a Clemson" and "Clemsoning" They took 3 calls and 2 were obvious coot fans. The one Clemson fan took issue with the terms they were using and they beat him up pretty bad. Today they finished up the top 3 and they asked the question to themselves "who have we ranked too high and who have we ranked too low"? The first answer: Clemson, too high. And they did it again, "I think they will pull a Clemson somewhere in their schedule".
Dang y'all, have I missed something are do other teams lose a game once in a while? We have stopped losing to the Wakes of the world. Do we have to win the National Championship to get that term off our backs? Thoughts?

Neither adds or detracts from who Clemson is. If talk was the charm the Coots would win the National Championship every year. Sure would rather "Clemson" than "Cooting" any day!

from 6-0 to 6-6.

up with any original commentary and have just jumped on an old term that hasn't applied in the last 3 seasons. Yes, all teams choke at times, but for whatever reason, ESecPN decided we would be the shining example of it a few years ago during the Bowden era. unfortunately it stuck and all we can do is keep winning.

Wish I could call his show and give them the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of the word Clemsoning. By definition, Clemsoning means losing to a team that is unranked. Which means losing to the likes of highly ranked Georgia, or Florida State or a ranked Geogria Tech team, by definition, is NOT Clemsoning.

As a matter of fact, maybe they should began calling it "Chickening" because South Carolina has lost to an unranked team more than we have as of late.

The six turnovers to the Coots and the loss to FSU last season. All though not Clemsoning but very head scratching losses.

Well if they picked us at #4 that's a good thing. It means people are noticing and that Clemson is in their heads.
It seems like in the past when the so called experts start giving Clemson some love. The Tigers use to make them eat their words.

Should've just said, "Clemsoning is losing to an Unranked team when you're ranked. We haven't lost to an Unranked team (while being ranked) in 27 games in a Row I might add. Second longest streak in the Nation behind Alabama." So suck it!!!

I'd truly enjoy no longer seeing this "term" posted

You post seeking some method of getting rid of the word, and yet use it in the subject line. Lack of use will soon relegate it to short term memory loss.

But regardless, please stop posting it here.

Re: The term "Clemsoning"

I listen to this in the morning and when they got past 10 and Clemson wasn't mentioned I was thinking to myself they aren't going to rank Clemson in the top 40. So for them to be at 4 on the show is very surprising on that show.

Greg McElroy is good on the show. I think he adds a lot but also can really come off with some stupid stuff. A while back he was talking about lineman having SEC speed.

Taylor Zarzor is a closet NC State guy. I believe that is where he issues with Clemson is. When they come up he often goes off on the Clemsoning term and how they have to stop doing it. If you disagree with him then he talks over you and then hangs up.

I don't deny Clemsoning. It was Tommy Bowden who made Clemson that way. Getting blown out by Wake Forest, Beating Miami and then losing to 2-10 Duke. But it hasn't happened since 2009 Maryland or 2011 NC State. I would argue NC State was the same as West Virginia. Just got your ### beat. That happens. It is nice that the guys on Thursday night have recently tried to say that doesn't happen anymore. They also put it back on Carolina this year. Oh well, at the end of the day their ranking means nothing on May21st.

I feel we will lose a game or two this year. I honestly hope we don't. L'ville and FSU do scare me and the GT game will be a toss up and let's don't forget the ND game. Playing L'ville away will be the game that scares me the most. Our defense will be pretty good and our offense will be better than last year, especially if DW is injured. 95% of the teams lose to someone they shouldn't each year. If Watson didn't get hurt in the GT game, I believe we would have won.

Even if we do lose this year, I don't think we will pull a "Clemson". Heck, last year usc was a top 5 pick and they barely made a bowl so how many times did they "pull a ####"?

Clemson football has had four great years and people are getting jealous. How many people now strongly dislike Alabama? I know I do and it is because they are winning at a high level and they are there every year. I was getting tired of the run FSU had in the 80's 90s and early 2000's. Hopefully now. It is our turn.

Go Clemson Tigers!!!

When I look at the schedule I could see a loss or two as well. The NC State game at NC State could be a tough one. Just got to beat the team in front of you and don't look ahead.

Clemson over the past 50 years, I could build a new Death Valley.

If I had a dollar for every time I have heard those type of comments and said multiple times, "Screw the b@#stards," I could rebuild every stadium in the U.S. of A.

In other words I really don't give a hoot in he1l what any yingyang has to say...including that Coot of all Coots: GWPCoot.

Yeah, I was listening. I about threw up in my mouth. I used to like that show when Bill King was the host, but these two know very little about college sports and clearly have some other objective other than unbiased reporting. They just parrot back what other have said. I've stopped listening to them since they land-blasted the caller who to exception to the 'c......ing' remark. They spent two weeks running through their rankings and then tried to say that they don't pay attention to ranking when it comes to c.......ing.

Re: The term "Clemsoning"

May 21, 2015, 9:57 PM

Exactly. It was like the Clemson guy that called in really made them mad. He was not disrespectful or anything. He just said that Clemson had not lost to a ranked team in years and that we were 2nd only to Alabama in that stat. He couldn't get it out of his mouth before they were all over him. They said Clemsoning had nothing to do with rankings but had to do with not meeting expectations. Basically losing to less talented teams. They brought up the GT loss and said we got blown out by a much less talented team and we need to stop making excuses. It was really weird.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Might as well learn to live with it

May 21, 2015, 10:17 PM

Just like the woo hoo the term "clemsoning" is not going away any time soon. We could go undefeated for three seasons and the first loss in season 4 would be pulling a Clemson. Even though it's meaning has not applied to Clemson in several years but has to many of the other schools across the country (looking at you UGA and coots) it's a term that sticks with us because it's catchy and a simple way to make a backhanded comment about the team where the ones using the term feel witty. Kind of like FSU being called "free shoes university", that was quite a while back when that happened (plenty will say it never stopped) but other fans will use it for ever.

We just need to keep winning and ignore all the stupidity surrounding the rest of college football media.
