The "tell me what to expect" thread.

Our only child wants to attend Clemson. For a while, she thought she might have to go out of state because Clemson ddid not offer what she wanted.

But as she's progressed, her thoughts on what she'd like to study have progressed, too. So Clemson's right back in the frame.

If she gets in, she'd be a fourth generation Tiger. Her late, great grandfather is class of '39. I think he'd be proud to see her attend. I know I would.

I think this is a better forum to ask this than some other message board/reddit because y'all have kids who have gone/are attending Clemson today so what do we need to know:

We can afford $25,000k/year cash. Anything else we'd have to scrimp to get.
Our girl is a junior. She has a 4.6 GPA and is taking AP stuff this year.
She is a good kid, a good student-athlete, and self-starter. Doing Youth in Government, Beta Club, National Honor Society.

What SAT/ACT score will boost her chances of regular admittance?

And is $25k/cash/year enough/barely enough/not nearly enough?

I don't think we're gonna need the security cameras for this next part.

Will cost a fair amount more than that. Also, don't expect any

academic scholly money from the school. A 1100 SAT and 5.0 gpa might be worth like a $500 scholly or something like that.

If she can get palmetto fellows scholly that will help a ton.

What does "a fair amount more" mean? $40k/year in-state?

In state I assume?

They do give financial aid based on income and means.

Everyone has to fill out a federal FAFSA.

You can fill it out early and get a feel for what you can expect it to cost but don't be surprised when any savings you have bump the cost of attendance up.

We make too much money to get any help.

My girl is in grad school now, so I haven't looked back at undergrad costs for this year.

The tuition calculator was a pretty accurate tool. Chances are, if your girl gets into Clemson she will qualify for the $2,500 per semester LIFE scholarship (which is factored into the calculator). As of last year, in-state tuition was $7,600 per semester, plus various fees depending on their major & other factors. Freshman room & board vary according to the dorm & meal plan you select. She will most likely be off campus by her sophomore year. Last year that was typically $800-1,000 per person per month, and nearly all leases are 50 weeks.

Most important, if she truly wants to be a Clemson Tiger, don't be offended if she is offered the bridge program. It is just additional classroom space about 4 miles away, and there is no correlation between bridge placement and student expectations. My bridge student ended up graduating Magna ### laude, on time, and already one semester into her graduate program.

Good luck and Go Tigers!

I expect our daughter to get Bridged, or have to do summer term, at the very least. Either way, she's good.

My son is there as a Freshman this year. I think it was about 32-33K (fees, tution, R&B, etc) per year in-state. But he was a Palmetto Scholar, so gets 7500 a year from the State. Clemson also gave him about 2500 his first year as STEM incentive. He should qualify for the State incentivce for that after this year (providing he keeps the 3.0 scholarship requirement) ... which will keep him at about 10K. We got a handfull of other stuff (small dollars) to help out (apply for as many as you can.) In the end, my "cost" was about 21K for first year. But ... that included Engineering program fees, so you may not have to pay that 1500. Also had to get him a quality laptop (which should last the full four years.)

And we have been under $25,000 per year out of pocket every year, with state scholarship money.
