Why the SEC Network will fail

Aug 13, 2014, 9:44 PM

I've been hearing concern about the SEC network and how it will ruin college football and create too much revenue for one conference. I'm here to tell you that the SEC network will not be as successful as some may hope. ESPN is investing a ton of money into the promotion of the network. You can see it every where, even here on TNET. The entire country knows about it.

ESPN is banking on the SEC network getting high ratings nationally and not just regionally here in the south. This will not work.

First of all, if you want a large national audience, a network MUST get high ratings from the northeast and west. This is where the highest concentration of the population lives. There is no way California, Ohio or New York is going to be watching the SEC network.

If you look at the schedule for the SEC Network you will notice the schedule line up is mediocre at best for the first 4 weeks.

Aug. 28

6 p.m. -- Texas A&M at South Carolina

9:15 p.m. -- Temple at Vanderbilt

Aug. 30

Noon -- Tennessee-Martin at Kentucky

4 p.m. -- Arkansas at Auburn

7:30 p.m. -- Southern Mississippi at Mississippi State

Aug. 31

7 p.m. -- Utah State at Tennessee

Sept. 6

Noon -- Florida Atlantic at Alabama

Noon -- Arkansas State at Tennessee

4 p.m. -- Eastern Michigan at Florida

4 p.m. -- Nicholls State at Arkansas

7:30 p.m. -- Sam Houston State at LSU

7:30 p.m. -- Lamar at Texas A&M

Sat, Sept. 13

Noon -- UCF at Missouri

4 p.m. -- Louisiana-Lafayette at Ole Miss

7:30 p.m. -- Kentucky at Florida

Sat, Sept. 20

Noon -- Troy at Georgia

Out of all these games only two have some sort of national appeal. And there's only 10 days out of the year where football is on. What will they do the rest of the year?

Does ESPN really believe that the northeast and west will care about SEC basketball, baseball, softball, volley ball or any other sport not football? Highly unlikely. I've lived in the west and northeast. Neither area cares that much about college sports. Especially college sports not in their area.

This is a huge gamble ESPN is taking. I'm not sure how the numbers shake out but if the SEC network becomes the B1G Network it will be a money loser for them.

So all this doom and gloom is nonsense. No one knows how much the schools will be making. I think this could be a disaster, especially for ESPN.

Big Ten network keeps on rolling. If I

My guess is that ESPN will require cable networks to carry the SuxEC channel (and pay for it) if they want the other ESPN channels. Advertising will be set up the same way - want time on the good channels, gotta pony up for the crap channel.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Big Ten Network is fine

Aug 13, 2014, 10:04 PM

but everyone is acting like SEC Network is going to exceed the B1G Network by large margins. I don't see this as the case. The SEC Network will be a regional network and not a national network like ESPN is hoping it will be. They're investing into it like it's going to appeal nationally all year. It won't.

This. It doesn't matter who watches it. It matters who pays for it. As long as ESPN keeps it on cable packages then it makes money. The only number that may come in lower is the advertising revenue in states outside the footprint. Advertising in those states is just bonus money though. The subscriptions are guaranteed revenue even if nobody in California ever flips to that channel.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why the SEC Network will fail

Aug 13, 2014, 10:32 PM

This would matter if advertising drove network finances these days. But it doesn't. Carriage fees per subscribers are the real money in the cable network business these days. Advertising revenue for the SEC network is predicted to be much lower compared to those fees.

same thing. I don't think it will "fail", in fact, I think it will be the most popular conference network created. I think it will be good in the Southeast, but I don't think it has the "national" appeal that SEC fans think it does. It will be like the Big 10 Network in that I don't have much interest in what it provides.

I think there will be shows I will watch, but I don't think being on channel 611 helps either.

But it could be a money loser for ESPN by the amount of money they are investing into it.

Re: Fail is a strong word.

Aug 14, 2014, 9:15 AM

Hey Woods - I'm pleased you backed off "fail".

You're basing your opinion on ratings. What do you think the ratings are for the 40 plus channels no one watches (Gameshow Network, etc.)? Maybe a few old ladies watch some of those channels but that would be it.

Once ESPN got all these cable and satellite providers to commit to the SEC Network at $1.30 per month per cable box the revenue was in place. It doesn't matter if anyone is watching or not.....advertising revenue is just icing on the cake and is only expected to cover operating costs.

The best hope for the SEC Network to fail is for the current cable monopoly system we have to implode. That day is coming....it has to be, because the technology is in place for all of us to buy what we want a-la-cart.

Here is the conundrum though......if we do go a-la-cart then that means all the "little old ladies" paying ESPN $5.00 per month for ESPN (even though they never watch it) will no longer be paying that $5.00 so all us college football fans have to make up the difference. Expect to pay about $20.00 per month for ESPN, then once you add in some news channels, networks and a few others your TV bill is still about $80/month.

Re: Why the SEC Network will fail

Aug 13, 2014, 11:47 PM

This would be the worst result for the ACC. The ACC still needs a network and if the SEC fails the ACC will struggle to convince ESPN of its value. I do think the ACC network will get more coverage outside of football, mainly because many of its fans are alumni that follow the Universities not just the school, but the initial start up will focus on football/basketball. I don't think the SEC network will put the ACC to far behind from a revenue stand point, but at this point I do think they will be at an advantage over the digital content that the ACC currently produces.

But the ACC does include Notre Dame which gives us a huge footprint in the northeast and nationwide. (You have no idea how popular ND is outside of the south). Plus Boston College, Syracuse and Pitt gives a pretty big footprint northeast as well.

The ACC would be able to provide more days of quality content because of the strength of basketball. So it actually could prov

how when or if the ACC Network launches. The SEC Network is the model. Will it turn into a deathstar that gives birth to yachts and humungous bags of cash for all SEC teams or will it be some channel with a few subscribers? We need to know before the ACC commits to a network.

Also some of us are concerned that our cable or satellite provider may charge us for it whether we want it or not. Doesn't look like that happened but give it time.

I moved to Boston 18 years ago. It is amazing how isolated a town with big pro sports is from College. Boston College had some great years with Matt Ryan and no one in the city even blinked or could name him. Any interest in College is typically Notre Dame / Big Ten.

I think SEC network will only do well in SEC states and other big college states that compete against the SEC.

Re: Why the SEC Network will fail

Aug 14, 2014, 10:49 AM

I've thought the acc could put together a better year round package than pretty much any conference. With the addition of the NE schools the acc has the potential to offer a hockey package which would be a big draw in the NE. The acc is also very strong in soccer which is probably the fastest growing sport in america. In fact the only sport the SEC has a clear advantage in is football but if their current sectv schedule is an indication of future offerings it won't really matter much as the acc could offer a schedule as good or better than that. ND-Duke would be a bigger draw than any 3 of those games combined outside of possibly the am-scar game. If the acc is smart they should consider going after some hockey only schools to establish a stronger foothold in the market.

Aug 14, 2014, 2:30 PM

Woods -
I just read an article on the money each SEC school spent to get ready for the SEC Network. It was a few million per school as each school has to have a studio for coach/player interviews and all sports venues need to have fiber optics to the studio, among many other things.

ESPN on the other hand seems to just be using part of their ESPNU studio in Charlotte for the headquarters of the SEC Network. Basically, the headquarters of the SEC Network is in ACC country.

Your hope that ESPN loses their shirt on the SEC Network is unlikely I think because ESPN hasn't spent much at all relatively speaking......the schools themselves are the ones who are out the most right now.

Those millions are supposed to be recouped in year 1 though so no biggie I guess. To me, it looks like ESPN has little to lose by taking the time to launch the SEC's network and millions to gain.

What a lot of us need to realize is that ESPN has very little original content. They've got that "30 for 30" thing and maybe a few other shows but all of ESPN's money is made off someone else's product....college football, NFL, baseball, etc. So when the SEC decided to partner with ESPN I would think ESPN jumped at the opportunity because this is another product ESPN can sell and make money from......theoretically, the SEC could have launched the SEC Network without ESPN and kept all the revenue.

I assume the SEC realized that partnering with ESPN not only gave them expertise in running a network but it also gave them the muscle of ESPN to strong arm cable and satellite providers into carrying the SEC Network. So if the ACC ever launches a network I think ESPN would also jump at the opportunity to partner and sell the product......it is after all the only way ESPN makes money.......but will Swoffie do the deal without Raycom being involved?

Well of course, that falls under the "strong arm" tactics....creating the demand put a lot of pressure on the providers to sign on.

Re: Why the SEC Network will fail

Aug 14, 2014, 11:44 AM

I am confident ESPN has access to all the info in the world on where viewers are coming from. Once the distribution is in place then they can start scheduling real games on the network.

The reality is that you don't need to be the NFL Network to make everyone money...you can bring in a fraction of that and it would be huge. What will be interesting is how it compares to ESPNU.
