I’m a UNC grad and this is embarrassing but not shocking coming from the professors. The majority of professors at most colleges are liberals and some are pretty nasty about it. I will say that the UNC board of trustees and the NC state legislature is waking up to this crap. The professors will lose on this fight.

Did you know that Clemson fought against and ignored a similar law in SC for almost 100 years and has only recently complied with an updated law (only one 3 hour class)?
Personally, I think these bills/laws are ludicrous. While I agree that these topics/foundational documents are important, college bound kids would have almost certainly had required courses in high school on these same topics/subjects.
Colleges and Universities should have the autonomy to determine their own offerings without legislative tampering.

I wouldn’t say they are ‘largely’ state funded…maybe 15-20% of the annual budget it from state funds? But I guess even that amount apparently opens the doors to the political whims of our fine state legislative body…many of which couldn’t even get into Clemson University today.

I understand they are state institutions, I just don’t personally like politicians having a say in course offerings…although I guess political tampering is inevitable regardless of party affiliation.
As to my last comment…saying many couldn’t get into Clemson by today’s admissions requirements…a lot tougher than it used to be.

I hope that’s an old picture from back when most were running around with face diapers. If that’s more recent bless their little hearts.

(Not surprising, coming from Fox News, which does a good job of stirring up conservatives.)
They don't oppose the courses, but rather that they be required courses for all students at UNC.
It looks like a pretty basic Civics class that ought to be taught in High School!
But, I guess, we can get outraged about this if we want.

There are other courses required for an undergraduate degree. Always been that way with no protests from faculty. They can claim academic freedom all they want but this just looks bad on the part of the professors.

I understand the slippery slope but I don’t think it’s an overreach to ask students to know a little about our founding when the tax payer largely funds the place. It just seems like the wrong hill to die on when public perception of college in general is poor these days.

I don’t think it’s a slippery slope…once that door is open, it’s open.
As another poster pointed out, all of that information is already included in other classes currently offered. In addition, this is something I’m almost positive nearly 100% of those attending high school in the US would have already been exposed to.

Same here. I don’t think we had to take a course on the constitution because I don’t think it had been written yet.

(Why do you think Fox News used the misleading headline?)
I'm sure they have core required curriculum and maybe they already have a history or poli sci requirement. I don't think it is a bad look as much as some folks know how to stir others up on stuff like this.
And, like I said, it reads as if it is something that should be taught in North Carolina high schools! That's when I took Civics.
I graduated from Clemson nearly forty years ago, but I feel as if the required (non-major) courses I took wouldn't have filled a whole year. I think I had a history or poli-sci requirement, not a government requirement. But it's been a long time!

Doing this already to a degree. You mention the science/ math classes, But I am pretty sure a Bachelor of Arts degree does require a couple of science and math courses to compliment the more detailed Humanities/ Social Science classes that are a part of the majors.
I received a Bachelor of Science degree. I had to take 9/ and 6 hours of humanities and or social science class. I took political science and some music history classes to satisfy requirements.
I personally think these add ons should be cut as requirements. I know the argument for these classes is to provide a well rounded education. That said, A big issue for our nation is the continually rising cost of higher education. I think most science kids are taking 4-5 years to complete a 4 year degree. If we can shed the 25 hours of extra weight, it could help bring the 4 year degree back to being a 4 year degree.
It would help make it more affordable. I say this with the hope that students that want to take additional classes could do this on their own. It that would be their choice based on how much or little they want to take advantage of college.
