The dumb crap sportswriters write (not TNET) to sound fancy ...

carrying over from another thread -- things football sportswriters (again, NOT TNET) say/write to make what they're saying/writing sound somehow unique, esoteric, or nuanced.

"Long"
LSU's cornerbacks aren't tall/big. They're "long." In my world, "long" means you can get to the green on a par 5 in two. It's also what the Dalai Lama was. "Big hitter, the Lama....long."

"EDGE"
He's a five-star EDGE out of Washington, Georgia. He's not a defensive end. How prosaic is that?! He's an "EDGE." No, not the guy who plays guitar for U2. That's another Edge.

"in space"

This talented RB can really make make plays "in space." Which is to say, he really thrives when playing in a state of uncrowdedness.

TYTIA.

Those are all pretty normal terms bud. Nothing weird about it.

They’ve been made “normal” by idiots using them constantly to try to sound cool.
That’s kind of his point.

Well no sh*t that’s his point. Idiots? I’ve heard my coaches at all levels use these exact terms when speaking on the game.

Describing a player that has great wing span and reach as Long is an athletic term (IE some guys are short armed and stuby and some guys are Long) Playing on the “Edge” or holding the edge is obviously a DE main job so that’s a normal football term. And “good in space” meaning a guy is more east and west rather than down hill north and south so that’s to is a proper term.

Add "east and west" and "downhill" and "north and south" to the list.

Because the fact is, depending on the football field's orientation on the compass, a guy running "north and south" could actually be running "east and west," and visa versa.

And I've never seen someone run downhill in a football game, because football fields are flat.

2001: A Space Odyssey was weird. It was not dumb.

Something can be dumb but not weird, like the dumb crap that sportswriters write/say.

Long arms. Pickett has a 7' wingspan. Rangy also fits here.

Rangy...long-armed...*anything* but "long" ...

Or they could just write/say "big" or "tall" or big and tall.

I forget which coach it was…
But at the ACC media days, some idiot reporter asked one of the coaches about his “edge room” and the coach looked at him like ….huhhhh ### are you talking about? 🤣

And oh, that brings up another one that may be the dumbest of all.
Everything is a “room” now.
We don’t have position groups anymore.
They are rooms.

"Lotta depth in the room"

Physicality grinds my gourd. Likely started by talking heads making playoff predictions.
