In 2016 Clemson played Troy

Clemson trailed at the half and ended up winning by 6. As I recall 2016 ended up pretty well for the Tigers. Am I predicting a national championship this year? No but I am saying that there is a long way to go and maybe being punched in the mouth by a group of 5 team will end up being a plus.

So it’s been 9 years since we played a close game with Troy…. Guess we haven’t improved. Got it.

Pretty rough that we have to result to this. We don't have any players on this team that could get any playing time on that team. Oh maybe the Punter. But definitely not QB,Wr,DL,LB and so on

this program hasn't proved to be close to "elite" since 2020.
It's an insult to 2015-2019 Clemson teams to compare any Clemson team 2021-present to them.

It’s not my intention to compare this team to 2016. I see the glaring differences like everyone else. All I mean to say is that the season is far from over and that it’s premature to write this team off.

Yeah, teams were fearful of getting 70 put up on them every week

we started out as the hunted. Teams trying to make a name for themselves. Then there was about a 20 game run there where you could tell every team was fearful of the tigers. Coots didn't say anything. FSU fans were coming on here claiming to be here "in peace".
Ain't close to that these days.

This board is half coots on its best day. They just learned to play a passive-aggressive game. Think, “geez that Brad Brownell guy is really great and you should keep him around as long as possible. But definitely make a plan B for Dabo asap.”

I was at that game in 2016, and it was a hard one to watch.
Clemson receivers dropped balls often, and they failed to make the layups. Offensive line didn't block well. Watson threw some interceptions as well. It was just an uncharacteristically poor performance by the offense that day. Even the defense gave up some big plays at times.
We were lucky to win that one. If that fumble at the goal-line stood resulting in the touchdown by that Troy player running it back for a touchdown, I am not sure we would've won.
After that game, I was really concerned about the team.
That was a good Troy team, though, and they won 10 games that season.
Overall, I think the upcoming Georgia Tech game will be able to tell us even more about this year's team.

Deshaun Watson > Cade Klubnik Wayne Gallman > Adam Randall; Adam Choice > David E.; Tavien Feaster > Keith Adams Hunter Renfrow > Antonio Williams/Tyler Brown Artavis Scott > TJ Moore Mike Williams > Bryan Wesco; Deon Cain > Cole Turner Jordan Leggett > Olsen Patt-Henry Mitch Hyatt > Tristan Leigh Taylor Hearn > Collin Sadler Jay Guillermo > Ryan Linthicum Tyrone Crowder = Walker Parks Jake Fruhmorgen > Blake Miller
Austin Bryant > TJ Parker Carlos Watkins/Dexter Lawrence > Peter Woods Christian Wilkins > Demonte Capehart Clelin Ferrell > Will Heldt Ben Boulware > Wade Woodaz Kendall Joseph > Sammy Brown (but Sammy might end up better) Dorian O'Daniel > Misun Kelley (best comparison we have here) Jadar Johnson < Khalil Barnes Mark Fields > Ashton Hampton Cordrea Tankersley > Aveion Terrell Van Smith > Ricardo Jones
Greg Huegel > Nolan Hauser Andy Teasdall = Jack Smith
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the 2016 team, player by player, was far, far beyond this team. I see only one position where this squad would make the starting lineup (Khalil is better than Jadar) and then two ties. That means 21 positions where 2016 was just flat out better.
They were also more proven. Yes, they had a close game against a ranked 10-3 Troy team that was famous for being giant killers. But they were coming off a good win against a good Auburn team, and in the previous season, this similar team had beaten top 10 Notre Dame, FSU, UNC, and crushed #4 Oklahoma before coming up just short against one of Saban's best teams ever. The 2025 team won a close game against a 4-8 Troy who was losing to Nicholls at halftime last year. They were coming off a dominating loss against LSU, and are 2-9 against ranked teams the last 4 seasons.
Do you really not see the difference and why fans are reacting so negatively?

Of course I see the same problems everyone else sees. All I said was that it’s too early to give up on this team. Am I encouraged? No but I wasn’t encouraged after the 2016 game against Troy. If there isn’t significant improvement against Georgia Tech then I will agree that the season is a bust. The way most people act is that we should just forfeit the rest of our games and just spend our time whining on tigernet.

Now I remember why I rarely post anything on Tigernet. Just one little positive post saying that after two games the season is not ruined and I get attacked and accused of saying things I didn’t say and not seeing things that are clearly problematic.

In 2016 we had Deshaun Watson at qb. As well as a star studded offense and defense. This. Is. Not. The. Same…..not even a little bit. Actually, even drawing the comparison is disrespectful to that team. We are in no way, shape or form, even in the same universe as that team. You can only make excuses for so long.
