Ah Yes, Myrtle Beach. Was once the place to go and enjoy a great summer.
Unfortunately it's now a place to avoid. Especially after sundown.

Myrtle Beach ranks as one of the highest crime rates in the country. The crimes statistics shows Myrtle beach is 230% higher crime rate than the national average.

That is a shame as like most would not go to Myrtle now, stay in the strand South of there. In the day it was a place of pure "MAGIC".

Had a lot of fun there but now just memories. At one time it was truly a special place.

The Magic Attic was a great place for teams to go. There was no crime to speak of back in the 70s.

Had a few good times at MA back in the day. My good friend could dance as good as anybody in the country and I would just try to not look stupid next to him. Was the biggest girl magnet situation I've ever been in my whole life. 🕺

There's a CURFEW now for underage kids because of the bad elements and tragic events.

This 100% - MB city proper now is a hellhole of traffic, crime, drugs. and bedbugs. Would not go if you paid me 100 grand.

They destroyed Myrtle Beach when they moved the Amusement Park off of Ocean Blvd. The took it away from the teenagers and turned into a great big shopping mall. I haven’t been since my kids were in Middle School sometime in 2000-2006.
What is it like now ??

Same. The last time we took our kids was 2006, which was not coincidentally the last year of the Pavilion theme park.

Loved that amusement park. Fun coaster, all the great smaller rides like Tilt-a-World, and a great haunted house. That and playing in the ocean was the best.

That place has been in Myrtle Beach forever… my whole life. Went there as a senior in high school after graduation, and had too many. Went there as a 50 year old, and had too many. If I went back as a 63 year old, I would still probably have too many.

Great great memories and stories about the Bowery. One night hung out with fiddlin Phil back at our hotel until 6am. Dude was hilarious and an amazing fiddle player.

Spent many a good time at the Bowery in the early 90’s.
Saw plenty of good bands there as well!

Saw Alabama many times and drank many beers there. Witnessed go go dancer, Little Egypt, flip upside down hanging onto ropes and rings while dancing on the ceiling and saw the first (don't if she was the only one) 300 lb go go dancer in SC. What a place!

Sadly, it's called Murder Beach now.. Seems like the downside tragectory began about 15 years ago. Not sure why but, it is real. Hopefully, this will change for the better soon. If not, there are other places to go.

High School in the early 60's, never got carded, and drank Buds.
Loved that place, the music, dancing and always more kids from our school would show up. Later, we'd cruise up and down the boulevard before heading back to OD. Am at OD now and was in Myrtle two days ago but didn't stop by the Bowery. Myrtle ruined itself destroying the old Pavilion and getting rid of the amusement park in front, as that whole area looks like a vacant blight. And the amusement park a short ways up the boulevard was expensive: $16 for two to ride its old roller coaster.
Meanwhile, back in OD the crowds were out in mass just like in the old days. Last night, we drove to Calabash and ate at Beck's...mighty fine seafood, great service and not expensive by beach standards. Also, Hoskins Restaurant is still going strong in OD with darn good food, relatively inexpensive. We were good friends in RH with some of the Hoskins who ran that place, envying the family when they would spend the summers in OD to manage it.
Traffic's not been too bad, as most seem from out of state what with S.C. kids starting school so darn early. Just don't understand why they think returning to classes the first of August is necessary, other than all the frigging days they have off during the school year. One restaurant manager told me they have a heck of a time keeping help this time of year.

I saw Alabama at the Bowery only 1 time. Me and a friend of mine were kicking around summer ideas. The next weekend we were headed to Myrtle Beach for the Summer. We lived on the 10th floor of the Holiday Towers ( two white high rises) facing the Magic Kingdom with the wooden roller coaster. Plus we could see the beach.
I worked at that amusement park. My first job lasted 1o minutes. I was hired to work on the big wooden coaster. My boss came over handed me a bag of nails and a hammer. Then he told me to walk the track nailing down loose boards. When he said the whole track I went back to the guy that hired me and ask if he had another job. I worked at the go-cart track. Handing out free tickets was a great way to pick up chic’s.
Living at the beach from June until Labor Day was a summer I will never forget.

I remember, vaguely, seeing a band called Mother’s Finest at Mother Fletchers. Times sure have changed. Downtown MB is a dangerous place to be at night. Burroughs and Chapin got greedy and destroyed the area. They have been haunted by bad decisions for years now. There seems to be a push to try to restore that area, but it’s a slow process.
