I can't imagine why there would even be any discussion on the topic.

Maybe I'm missing the "Big Picture" here (lol), but

by that logic, marijuana and liquor could be used on campus as well.
The ruling wouldn't banish the study of tobacco, just the usage.
I've been a "former" smoker for well over 25 years now and I don't recommend the recreational use of tobacco for anyone. But other uses may be found--medicinal, organic pesticides etc.,--and I think there is validity in research.
Also, Clemson is steeped in the history and tradition of land grant universities....but it hasn't been an "agricultural college" for quite a while.

some designated smoking areas for those on campus who wish to smoke. I support others' right to kill themselves slowly for no good reason.

Agreed - let people smoke as long as it isn't harming

others. Yes, I know second hand smoke can be harmful, but catching a whiff in passing is not. Smokers can reasonably be accommodated.

and the faculty were for it, with overall polling leaning against (50% against 6% neutral and 44% for) but they're trying to force it through anyway.

A certain group of people start to believe they know what's best for everyone else. Then they do whatever they can to make sure that everyone else behaves exactly like they think they should.

Nobody's stopping me from smoking a cigar at my tailgate

I'm not a smoker but enjoy an occasional stogie. If there's a rule against it but no enforcement then there's no way I'm putting my cigar out just because a cop asked me to.
