I learned here that portal players are typically up for auction, and they go to the highest bidder. I'm assuming that we outbid the other suitors. What do we think the winning bid was?
Also, since portal players have been called disloyal quitters with attitude problems by many here, are we worried how this will impact our culture?

I'm assuming he read the article from the interview and understands (like Brad's had to do) is find those diamonds and they don't always have to be a prima Donna looking for a handout... that there are kids just looking for a hand up.

because it is filled with players who are disloyal and/or have attitude problems, who are running from something and seeking a payday, and that to get players from the portal it comes down to a bidding war and Dabo isn't going to do that.
Ergo, since we have now used the portal, the logical follow-up question is how much it cost us to win the player's services.
A follow-up question is if we are also to assume that he's a quitter/has a bad attitude and if that will negatively impact our team culture.
These are logical questions for those who have steadfastly defended Dabo for not using the portal while attacking those who do.

Dabo didn't say there weren't any players in the portal good enough to play for us. Nobody else said that either.
What HAS been said most of the transfer portal players are not elite, which is 100% true. Most of the players available would not have made us elite. The transfer portal is not a magic exiler.

Reading comprehension and JK don’t go well together. Dabo said “most” not “all”. Yes some are all in it for the money, and Clemson won’t get them. Some are bad for the program and hopefully Clemson doesn’t get any of them either. Some aren’t either. There have been tens of thousands of posts here over the last few years by posters who said the portal is evil, players in it are problem children, and that to get players in the portal you have to participate in bidding wars. Plus, we were told that these players are often quitters who aren't talented enough to help us.
These were all reasons used to justify Dabo not using the portal.
Now we got a player from the transfer portal. The logical questions are now how much he cost, how good is he, and what is his attitude like.

The BB center is not topic of this post.) from UVA. His family name was Ogundeko or something similar to that. We lost out to Michigan for the guy. He played two years for the Wolverines; I don’t recall if he made one of the All American teams.)

All players in the portal do not require a bidding war. Most of the elite ones do though. Most. What Dabo did was find a guy that has the measurables we need. He also is giving him a chance to play D1 ball. He basically replaced Stellato. Or Johnson. I don't see a problem taking a chance on a few guys. Maybe he gets some 50/50 balls. Maybe he has a chance ro get in the 2 deep rotation. It looks to be a good fit, since the guy committed while on campus so he obviously wants to be here.

I’d say minimum $350k to $500k. It’s great to see Dabo adapt and evolve with the changes.
You know I hate NIL and the portal. But, we can’t stand on moral high ground and expect to compete with those utilizing those tools. It’s like anything else, use it wisely and it will pay off. Ignoring it has given us a rough few years.

The hand was obviously forced or at some point we wouldn't have a football team anymore unless it was half walk-ons. See in basic math, when you lose more players a year to graduation/portal than you have coming in through recruiting, you have no choice but to adjust. Dabo hung on as long as he could, if he wants to keep coaching, it'll have to come to this.

Because to be elite, we would have to have Elite players. We would have to have a quarterback on the level of DeShaun Watson or Trevor lawrence. We would have to have receivers on the level of Mike williams, or Sammy watkins, or Tee Higgins. We need defensive linemen like Christian Wilkins or Austin Bryant.
There are very few players of that caliber in the transfer portal. At best, most of the players in the portal are at the level we have now.
Moat of the teams that heavily use the portal are not elite. Ole Miss is not elite. South Carolina is not elite. Colorado is not elite. Miami is not elite.
The elite teams that do get 4 to 5 portal players (Georgia, Ohio St., Oregon, etc) are elite wven without those portal players.

Fortunately Dabo's mastery of getting the most out of our limited NIL war chest - winning ACC championships and getting into playoffs and such without breaking the bank - offers other coaches that don't possess Dabo's retention skills more flexibility and opportunity.

We have alyways good to average roke players on the team (Noble Johnson, Troy Stellato, etc.). This guy is basically going fill that role. Normally, that role would be filled by normal recruiting.

If your reply is meant to come across as you hope Dabo will go after a starter or 2 in the offseason in areas of need , I agree.
Several moves have to made in the offseason with coaches and positional improvement on offense and defense to get Clemson back to a top 5 team. I really don’t believe we’re that far off, so it’s not as if Dabo has to exactly reshape Clemson Football.
Hopefully, he gets aggressive and we get back to being not only the best team in the state , but a Top 5 program

I am a bit surprised that WR was our first one. I'm assuming that the coaching staff is expecting some additional WRs to transfer. Otherwise, it doesn't seem like a critical position of need like some of the others are.

Maybe it’s just the first position where a portal player was a good fit for all involved. I know that doesn’t fit your narrative but it’s probably what really happened. Dabo has said he will use the portal. But he will be just as selective there as he is in recruiting high school talent.

What I can tell you is that Brad was an early adopter of the transfer portal and NIL, and was very intentional about that. Along with facility improvements and increased administrative support for basketball, this has allowed us to upgrade our talent level and have more success on the court.
I wish Dabo had taken the same approach. Maybe Brad has rubbed off on him, or Dabo talked to Brad about how to successfully navigate all of this.

First of all if you can read this guy is not a high profile receiver in the portal. Second the list of schools contacting him is small. This isn't a guy that is going to come in and take a starting spot from anyone. He is simply replacing Troy Stellatto or Noble Jones.

Keller is like an in-house game here in a way. A Troll master for sure. Any opportunity to pounce on a negative or questionable take regarding Clemson folks is sure to make a fast rotation onto the boards, with lots of opportunities to continue prodding after with heaps of the same. There's a Seinfeld side to it in that learning is forbidden from episode to episode. Plus, no hugs.
The snark, backhandedness, and feigned gravitas is off putting. Snarcasm is how I would put it. Feigned attempts at sarcasm with pointed slights and false foundations.

I doubt we paid much, if anything up front for this player.
The comments you referenced were generally made regarding high-profile, instant impact type players who use the portal to make money instantly. This guy is being brought in to provide depth and replace players we lost to the portal that didn’t start here. Evidently he either believed he can beat out our current starting receivers or he is content being a role player who will provide depth on a team that has proven itself to be a consistent winner. Some people are happy just being a member of a successful team. I doubt anyone believes he will come in and start next year so his cost is probably consistent with that of other current backups.
But you know all this and you are just trolling as usual.

Boy, what a bunch of disingenuous posts from JK ..... everything from taking Dabo's (and other posters) words out of context, twisting them, or plain outright misrepresenting them. For the record, I do not like the portal for many reasons, but mainly for the instability that it is seeming to create in football programs. In sports with far fewer players, it probably makes more sense, but not football. The impact on a sport like basketball with something like 12 scholarship players, where one or two players can completely change a program is different than one where you depend on many more players to make an huge impact.
No one person here has said here that players in the portal are low character people disloyal to their team, gold diggers, trouble makers, etc. etc., but I would be shocked if among the almost 2,000 players now in the portal that there are not some in there for just about every reason. I assume, but do not know, that most of them are in there for what they think is a better opportunity for playing time, or a change to to play on a winning or championship team, or for more recognition of their talent to play at the next level. Some may just not be happy at their present school. Some may not like their position coach or their head coach. Some may not feel like they have had a chance to develop.
Personally, I think the sitting out a year and having five years to play four years is still a good system. I still feel like a commitment should actually have some meaning.
