Conference buyout

What did Maryland pay to buy its way out of the ACC. I don't remember it being anything near the $120m being mentioned for CU and FSU to buy out of the ACC.

If that's the case, I'll wait to see how the ACC justifies charging us $120m to leave.

I could be wrong but think they left before the ACC Network deal was done.

Did the media rights deal happen before the network deal? I was thinking the media rights deal was earlier and had a $50m buyout.

I agree.. I don’t believe Maryland signed the deal where a school had a huge buyout and has to give its revenue up for several years. They were smarter than Clemson. If I remember correctly, Swofford negotiated this deal. Not 100% sure if others had input.

They left under the first grant of rights deal Think it was 40 mil but they negotiated down in court. Or maybe got out for little or nothing cause ACC didn’t want contract challenged in court

Indeed. It's better for the Terps to suck in a high paying conference than suck in a low paying one.

Maryland left before the GOR got levied on everyone

Our favorite Commissioner gave us the big screw job before he retired. So before the TV screw job happened, there was a big one time buyout of $50mil. This was implemented right after the conference swings when Rutgers, UWV, and whoever else moved in those initial conference changes. Swoffie put a $50mil fee to leave conference but MD could see that they would pay for that in just over 2yrs by the annual gains of going to BIG.
Then Swoffie gave us the final F/U finger to all the ACC schools by locking them into a 25yr of Grant of Rights tied to TV, so any school that leaves loses all money gained by TV will be paid to ACC and ESPN.
So now it is hundreds of millions to leave until like 2037. Best way to renegotiate the contract is to add 2-3 schools to strike a TV deal that makes it easier to leave. Until then, pretty stuck!

You've got to lay the blame where it is. Whom are the idiots at Clemson that signed such a foolhardy agreement? You guys ought to post their names on here and ridicule the heck out of them.

The GOR accomplished exactly what everyone wanted

It saved the ACC and guaranteed they wouldn’t be picked apart by the other P5s. All signs back then pointed to 4 conferences surviving out of the 5 each with 14-16 teams. The problem is in hindsight, the drive is to 2 conferences not 4. ACC is the 3rd best conference and the only one of 3-5 that has held its membership intact. The length of the TV deal was something ESPN required I believe in order to co-own the ACCN. There was also significant $ dumped into each schools production capability to do onsite production vs traveling production that exists almost everywhere else. The cost to get out is going to be way higher than what some FSU guy calculated- exit fee is not the same as GOR. It sucks but there is no cheap way out and honestly I don’t like either of the league options out there for different reasons. However I also think the ACC rev is being understated. It is about a year behind the other conferences on releasing their rev report. Just now getting to the point of full year of ACCN reporting and past the startup cost. The model is for that rev to grow every year, it’s not a fixed amount. The full results of the comcast deal hasn’t hit yet either- that just went in effect this past year. If the conference would agree to unequal rev share then that may be the best answer for the next 10 years

Thought around 50 million but after reading some other poster’s I’m seeing even lower numbers. At the end of the day not sure what they ended up paying but they were operating in the red at that time. Not sure if it has gotten any better for them on that front.
