Tates Locke passed away today. big part of CU basketball history, both good and bad. If you think rick barnes was "active" on the sidelines, you never saw Tates.

of my Dad and Harold Boozer (Sumter, SC). Many good memories of fishing Santee and Summer Basketball Camp with him and his staff in Littlejohn.
Trusting dear friends will be reunited as all three have now “gone home”.
Thanks for the memories Coach . . . and hug my Dad for me!!!
Thanks for the “heads up” masked tiger !

Tates and Joe Williams seemed to be close when they were coaching in SC. They seemed to be very opposite in temperment and coaching style though.

head coaching job was at Army, where he went 40-15 in 2 seasons. When he left for Miami-Ohio, he was replaced by his young assistant, Bobby Knight. He was firey competitor at Clemson, and he would scream and stomp his feet on the court and I always thought he was having a stroke or a heart attack. He was obviously a sharp guy who supposedly had a charasmatic personality, as I was in middle school at the time and had a young female teacher who knew him, and she always got goo-goo eyes when she talked about him. He was extremely ambitious and competitive, and unfortunately used some terrible judgement along the way, but he was still very highly regarded by many who knew him.
RIP Coach.

He was doing the same things the other ACC coaches were doing . When Clemson signed Tree ,Skip Wise and Stan Rome the powers to be weren't gonna allow it compare it to what is happening now. Tates was a great coach. Skip Wise was the best freshman that I have ever watched, including Jordan.

Skip Wise was the best Basketball player to play in the ACC. If he could have kept his head on straight he would have set records that would be standing today. Also, if Tates would have had the Portal and NIL, he could have won the ACC and most likely an NBA title as well.

Sorry to hear about Hootie and Tates. Tates coached to be in the game with 2 minutes left. One frustrating thing was if Wayne Croft ever got hot and hit 3 baskets Tates would pull him out to rest him because he had to be tired.

They did not have a 3-point line while Croft was at Clemson.
