Tate is Stuggling, but why is he our best option???

Sep 22, 2021, 8:12 AM

Yeah, he had several missed assignments, stands around a lot and is watching the game go on a lot of times, and he had 2 false starts during the GT game. That is all in one game. Here is my thing though. I agree with all the coaches and Bockhorst, it is incredibly hard to ask a true freshman to do what we are asking him to do. What is the deal with all the other guys we have recruited to play OL? I know some have injuries, but surely not all of them! What is the deal with Mayes (4star), Rayburn (4star), Tchio(4star), Tucker (4star), and Howard (3star). All of these guys are older than Tate and have been with the program longer. On top of that I purposely left out Tayquan Johnson, Trotter, and John Williams because they have mentioned them having injuries. I'm just really confused on if we missed on recruiting that many guys??? How is a True Freshman who is messing up a ton in the games that much better than all of these guys???

we should just line up the players based on rankings

Sep 22, 2021, 8:14 AM

and let them play

I just put their recruiting rankings to show that these other guys who we recruited were ranked well too, just like Tate was, and they have been with the program longer. So you would think they would know what to do on some of the assignments that Tate has messed up on.

My guess is that he and whoever is behind him on the depth chart is very close right now but Tate has the biggest upside. They figure if they can survive the early rookie mistakes that by years end, he has the potential to be a really good OL.
All of our teams take the approach of being the best they can be by the end of the year. Neither 2016 or 2018 teams would have beaten Bama in September of those years.
This is certainly the roughest we have looked in any one area since 2010 but there have been several septembers where a lot of Tnetters we worried then it ended up we finished the season pretty well.
If the OL gets better, everything that is wrong with out offense starts improving with it. So I think they are trudging through the learning curve with this group to get to October and the rewards experience will bring with it.
I liked the look on Bockhorst's face.. he looks ready to lead. Lets see if we see a spark this Saturday.

I think Dabo's comment about transitioning to what they see

Sep 22, 2021, 8:36 AM

in practice to the game field is in play with Tate. Apparently in practice a lot of our guys are doing everything right but are not fully carrying that forward into the games. I have a feeling that is what is happening with Tate. Of course - it also didn't help that the GT defense this inexperienced freshman was supposed to be blocking was not the defense that lined up in front of him...

It’s obvious practice isn’t hard enough

The game should be the easy part

Yeah, I can agree with that. I would just expect may for him to be brought to the sideline a few times, and talk about this mistake or that mistake. Similar to what you see with other players when they miss an assignment. Especially when the game was a close as it was this past Saturday against GT, and we literally only played 5 OL guys the entire game. Also, I guess part of me just expects to see some guys like Rayburn and Mayes be further along and getting some reps, for functional depth if nothing else.

I appreciate your actual, legitimate response. Go Tigers!!

I think the fact that we didn't substitute any at all on the offensive line concerns me as much as anything. To me that means there is a gap between them and the guys behind them. If we had a great offensive line then I might be ok though I wouldn't like it. We don't have a great offensive line.

Now we “ like the look on someone’s face”

That’ll fix it?? Bockhorst is great at talking, but play has yet to match that level.

Someone posted a link to a 247 article earlier that was analyzing our offensive woes and noted the sub-par line play.

The article references PFF rankings of our offensive line, and Bockhorst and Tate were the lowest graded… Bock was actually the worst.

Not sure if those grades are legit but it’s puzzling to hear Bock reference Tate in these interviews, like he’s the weak link, and state that he graded himself as a winner.

I’ve watched the games - if he’s grading a winner by our coaches, maybe that’s why our line has struggled year in and year out.

Because our other best option is starting at center...

progressed as much as needed. Maybe some combination of the two. It is indeed surprising to see the freshman in there, but it bodes well for coming years!

Yes, that they are not trusted over the trueFR is not a good sign; red flag for those you mentioned being recruiting misses, possibly-

It all comes down to one thing, coaching.

Call it scheme, evaluation, development, X's and O's, etc...

The OL is on the coaches. Starts with Dabo, and ends with Robbie Caldwell and Tony Elliot. We have talent, its not the problem.

Re: Tate is Stuggling, but why is he our best option???

Sep 22, 2021, 10:52 PM

I said it before, I say it again: No freshman shod ever be the starter on a top program. That is a flat out failure in either development or recruiting, likely both if the case. I don't care how talented they are, an 18ish year old won't match up with a guy that has been in a major college strength and conditioning program for 2-3 years, much less 4-5. Getting in for a few plays at the end of the game is one thing, but starting before junior year is something you would never see at the old Nebraska teams, or Wisconsin etc. Just my .02 cents.

Yes remember that time Dabo tried to start Trevor Lawrence and we ran up against Bama . It was horrible . No true freshman should play !!

I trust the coaches, our staff knows what they’re doing, but I think we’ll see Tchio get some more reps.
