Symbiosis between Dabo and new hoops coach
Jan 15, 2022, 10:52 AM
|
|
Seems like one of Brad’s failures is not having a symbiotic relationship with Dabo. Dabo used to go to games and even bring recruits to games. He was complimentary of Brad in the beginning. Brad never returned serve and from his posts on here seems to resent Dabo.
It would benefit both programs if the new coach had a good working relationship with Dabo. Brought basketball recruits on campus during football weekends, had them meet the team and Dabo. And gave Dabo and his recruits a behind the scenes look at basketball on recruiting weekends too.
Hopefully we can find someone who buys into CU and our entire athletic program.

If Brad would not pull a T Bowden every other game that would improve a lot of relationships. You just never know what you gonna get. Unless Brad gets us in the NCAA tournament we need to move on. It’s hard to fire a coach if he gets you in the tournament. He is in the same place of Bowden a few years ago. He does just enough to make it hard to let him go. I am hoping Neff is getting together a short list for both men and women’s hoops. Of course zi thing they been doing that for last few years.

I think heard Neff was tighter with Brownwell then Radivich was. I think Brad is a good coach but Clemson has always struggled in the ACC. Only winning years was with Ellis and Barnes that I can remember.

two years. He was 9-7 in conference play those years.
He had an overall losing ACC record while he was at Clemson
Perhaps the ACC was tougher, but Purnell was making no headway in his battle for a possible ACC title either regular season or tournament.
In fact, he appeared to be losing ground toward the end.
Both Rick Barnes and Oliver Purnell were pretty average versus the ACC and I believe both knew it was a real uphill battle that they could not win.
Brownell is certainly not making any progress either.
But his overall coaching record at Clemson on average is just as good as his predecessors.
Which is to say ... it’s not that good at all.

We were focused on seeding for the tournament. It’s mid-January and we are out of contention. We were heads and shoulders better back then. The ACC was a lot better back then.

Now when we choke it’s when no one is watching before any meaningful games even occur. And our pathetic coach blames the players and fans. So sad. So lame.

If I remember correctly, Coach Purcell had the team play for an ACC tournament championship. When has Coach Brownell ever had any of his teams in that position? And the ACC was much stronger as a conference back then. Also, Coach Shyatt left the program with talent that was not ACC caliber (trying to be nice, as I knew some of those guys).
The program needs a change. We've seen the same trends from a majority of his teams season after season. It's old and it's tired.

Bill Foster took us to the NCAA Final 8 in 1979-80. Many of his key players were from SC and overlooked by other teams. Larry Nance was from Anderson. That team was so good, we all knew that we would beat #1 Duke in Clemson. So, we packed in 13,863 in Littlejohn, a forever record (one student per step, standing room). Blew the roof off of Littlejohn! Free throws killed us in the NCAA. It is possible!
Foster's problem was recruiting against the rest of the ACC for blue chip players. Just could not get them to come to Clemson (sound familiar). Browneeee's problem too.... Foster was a good coach, just had a recruiting problem at Clemson. He won the NIT (at VA Tech) after leaving Clemson.
Tates Locke put together an great team in the mid 1970's, but he got caught cheating (bad, obvious) and got Clemson on probation, and fired. He actually hired Bobby Knight as an assistant at Army.

All Clemson men’s basketball coaches have had a recruiting problem.
Jan 15, 2022, 3:27 PM
|
|
Any success most of them had were based on getting lucky with a few late bloomers.
Foster with Nance, Barnes with Buckner, and Purnell with Booker.
Ellis and Brownell have had more success finding multiple good players at the same time, but they haven’t set the world on fire with their recruiting either. They are still ultimately fighting a significant uphill battle against traditional ACC powers.
As I’ve said before, Clemson has a perception problem and no young, energetic, persuasive coach is going to change that perception until the administration and fans decide to really get behind basketball.
We had a perception problem with football too, and even Dabo’s outgoing personality and emotion weren’t enough until the administration and fans really got behind the program. New facilities and more money for better coaching staff hires were the keys.
We can have that in basketball too. We just have to want it.

Rick Barnes WAS that young energetic coach. Everybody WAS
Jan 15, 2022, 3:52 PM
|
|
behind him 100% and he SEEMED to be on his way.
He coached a group of total nobodies his first season and managed to beat Duke in Cameron.
He identified diamonds in the rough with Boogie McIntyre, Harold Jamison, Bill Harder, and most of all with Greg Buckner. We got as high as #2 in the nation with Barnes. That was a strong line-up who played a tough brand of basketball.
But, he couldn’t sustain it. He couldn’t play roughhouse ball in the ACC because Dean Smith wouldn’t allow it and he couldn’t recruit the type of player needed to beat UNC, Duke, Maryland, and Wake through sheer talent.
Barnes has the same issues that any other smart, talented, eager, ambitious young coach will have.
He wanted to make Clemson a power house basketball program, but he found out he couldn’t.
We will never have a coach with more potential to succeed at Clemson than Rick Barnes. If we do find one, he will use us to get a better job.
End of story.

They used to play Golf together but don't think they get together as much. If they are around each other now, it is a formality and don't think they go out of the way to spend time with each other now. I think Brad and Dabo believe there is writing on the wall soon...

I think Brad is likely much better at basketball than Dabo is. Not to say that Dabo isn’t a solid player, but Brad played in college and has devoted his life to it. I’d say he would beat Dabo easily.

Judge you know Dabo is a legit baller and 1-on-1 guy. Brad is too slow and can't jump. Dabo would school him, and probably has if they've played before.
"Better than everyone at everything" is just your typical overreaction when trying to pump up the Brad.

Seems things have chilled big time. Dabo used to bring recruits to games and go on the ESPN coverage and do interviews during games. It might be that now we only warrant a spot on espn+ or Bally’s, but I doubt it. I think Dabo is as ready for a change as we are.

Two things
Jan 15, 2022, 2:38 PM
|
|
1. We are absolutely an elite football program. Stack us up to anyone the last 5 year, the last 10 years, and other than Alabama we win. 2. You don’t get to criticize our football program. You turned our basketball program into a laughing stock after being handed a perennial tournament team with top 10 fan support. You should be spending your energy packing and hiring movers. Not bashing the only reason we have enough money to pay your buyout.

1. We are not currently an elite program based on our performance. We didn’t even finish in the top 15 this past season.
One can argue that we are elite in terms of our talent level, but unfortunately that talent didn’t come close to reaching its potential on the field so it doesn’t really count for much.
What we did in previous seasons has nothing to do with our current status. LOL.
2. I can criticize any program I want, including our football program. I don’t need your permission or your approval.

Guess we’re 14th in football and 66th in basketball then. I guess if 14th isn’t elite, what is 66th? Sounds like our basketball program is in terrible shape. Our coach must be so embarrassed.
Hilarious to judge a programs status on just 1 season, though. Especially when you’re the one who keeps bringing up some fluke sweet 16 run from like 10 years ago.

Our basketball program will be in better hands after we fire that MS JV coach we have now. And, like I said, hopefully bring in someone Dabo vibes with so the programs can help each other, instead of basketball being an anchor that our football team has to drag around.

Hey buddy, I am guessing with your take like this that you have no friends in or around the program. Dabo and Brad are good buddies and hangout often, Dabo is one of the reasons Brad hasn’t been fired yet, he’s been and still is his biggest advocate in the athletic department.

With recruits and he would go on ESPN and say nice things about our basketball program. He has been completely silent and not at as many games and not bringing big time recruits like he used to. You and your scoks keep saying that’s not true. So which big time recruits has he brought to games and when has he joined tv coverage to talk about our basketball program lately?

Lol. Re: Symbiosis between Dabo and new hoops coach

Same song.....different verse......

This is the only one I use. Way to not deny your others, though.
Now go finish dabo’s laundry and get back to packing. You update that resume yet?

You are seriously confused. Dabo has always spoken highly of our BB coach.

“Coach Brownlee is a sham and an embarrassment to this university” -Dabo, probably, after tonight
Judge this is why I told you to keep your trap shut about football. Now look at you.
