Strom Thurmond

Jun 11, 2020, 2:48 PM

A prominent member of the Dixiecrat Party formed in 1948 for the upcoming presidential election. Thurmond, along with many/most southern democrats, pulled out of the democratic party due to Truman's order to integrate the military along with other civil rights actions. This movement failed and Thurmond and others returned to the friendly folds of the democratic party after the election. Haad little bearing on the election. Look it up!!

Strom Thurmond Institute of Government and Public Affairs will probably face the same renaming movement currently en vogue.

He's also responsible for one of the longest filibusters in history in an attempt to block a civil rights bill.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

Byrd was in the Klan but always gets a pass because he was a D. I'm fine with a standard. But not a double standard.

That's an exaggeration

Jun 11, 2020, 6:36 PM [ in reply to Re: Strom Thurmond ]

In 1924, Truman was a judge in Jackson County, Missouri. He was up for reelection, and his friends Edgar Hinde and Spencer Salisbury advised him to join the Klan. The Klan was politically powerful in Jackson County, and two of Truman's opponents in the Democratic primary had Klan support. Truman refused at first, but paid the Klan's $10 membership fee, and a meeting with a Klan officer was arranged.

According to Salisbury's version of the story, Truman was inducted, but afterward "was never active; he was just a member who wouldn't do anything". Salisbury, however, told the story after he became Truman's bitter enemy, so historians are reluctant to believe his claims.

According to Hinde and Margaret Truman’s accounts, the Klan officer demanded that Truman pledge not to hire any Catholics or Jews if he was reelected. Truman refused, and demanded the return of his $10 membership fee; most of the men he had commanded in World War I had been local Irish Catholics.

And POTUS 44 gave the very complimentary & endearing eulogy at Sen. Byrd's funeral. Look it up folks.
Double standards do exist. Check out LBJ's early political stances about integration. I pray the event at Clemson will be peaceful and well attended by the community and those nearby. No more chanting and no more looting after damaging property of the school or community residents. Keep the agitators out!
I am against changing names of University properties as I fear it would lead to changing the University and town's name. Has anyone done a serious study of Thomas Green Clemson's biography as it pertains to the racism that may have existed during his life? Be careful what you endorse happening to 1 or 2 targets; the scope may easily expand and arouse your resistance!

And Strom HATED that building (aka the bunker). Spent time in that building for Policy as well as walking across from Lee to Barre.

Of all the problems that we are having today, you want to stomp
on Strom, who has been dead for many years. He was a Republican
he died and I will say that Strom asked forgiveness for his sins.

The man was the Gov. of S.C. and a Senator for many years and many
South Carolinians voted for him, maybe you. Fritz Hollings was a
Gov. and a Senator and likewise was voted for many times by this
State, maybe you.

I don't see your post about him..oh, I almost forgot, he was a Dem.
Wow. The bottom line, most people in this State were on the same
page as these two men. Most today have changed. Maybe you.

about the parties and public reaction. Interestingly Strom was the main guy who kept much of the campus from being flooded by Hartwell. I think without that the water would be 6-8 feet deep in Death Valley as I recall

Where are all the t-netters supporting killing the Calhoun and/or Tillman names? What say you on this name?

Is there a name on campus that is not associated with something old and therefore something that offends someone because standards have changed? Byrnes, Manning, Smith, Kinard, Sikes, McCabe, Holmes, Cope, Sanders, Young, Mauldin, Lever, Klugh, ...I have no idea who most of these people are or were.

Re: Strom Thurmond

Jun 11, 2020, 6:13 PM

Well, you asked, so here is my opinion:

Strom was a man of his time. He held similar beliefs as the majority of his constituents as far as race is concerned. We can look back today and see clearly that his views were wrong. IIRC, he changed some of his views before he died, but not sure. There is no doubt that he was a racist but I don’t know that he was any worse than the rest of his generation...you have to remember he was born in 1902.

It’s a gigantic stretch to compare him to Tillman and Calhoun. Just like comparing TG Clemson to those others is a stretch. Calhoun and Tillman were horrible even in comparison to others of their time.

Until someone convinces me otherwise, I don’t think there’s any need to remove his name from STI. I am listening, though.

You are engaging in unhelpful speculation. Thurman did not lynch anyone nor did he advocate for slavery or own slaves. Comparing his actions to Tillman or JCC is a reach even for T-Net message board users

Not to defend Thurmond, but there is NO politician out there

Jun 11, 2020, 6:20 PM

anywhere who is squeaky clean. It is the nature of the beast. I wasn't around in 1948, and only 10 in 1964, so I can't say if Thurmond was any better or worse than other politicians of his era. He certainly had a reputation for flapping his gums as much as any.

ALL of this rhetoric is ridiculous! In addition to living the Golden Rule, didn't Christ say to the people "Let the one without sin cast the first stone?" These are two worthy aspirations for BLM and everyone on both sides of racism should think about and emulate. Of course, it appears that the eliminating the Bible will be a target of all the agitators eventually!!
