'Something to Prove' trumps $$

It's naive to think IU and Vandy...other 'rising' programs are built on NIL. Those players are motivated by hunger...drive...proving the degrees of separation of 'stars' doesn't consider heart. It's one thing to line up in the pros with a teammate making boatloads...yet another to thing 'team' can be bought in college.

Dabo outlined what would happen years ago...but selective memory by masses chose to forget. The same selective memory that blasts him for making what he does now, when he declined increases in the early years to pay for a quality staff. Lastly, selective memory allows masses to forget believing Dabo was NEVER going to succeed...and yet.

Supporters know...fans...nah...

Than worry about what the guy next to you is making. Everyone on those overachieving teams has been doubted. Those teams fight for one another. Something some of these high payroll teams have forgot how to do.

Then why are other teams able to do it with high payrolls and elite players out of the portal and top level recruiting… but Clemson can’t??

Teams like Ohio State have practically been a professional team for years. Whatever they do works well. I don't have the answer for Clemson. I do not know what needs to change but there's no need to worry about something I have no control over.

That's an easy answer.......Ohio State spends money on obtaining high quality 5* talent every year. Clemson spends money on retaining what it has, whether good or bad. Eventually, the pool runs dry and you are stuck with highly paid 3* players.

See one, single payroll/proof of what other schools are paying. NOT. ONE. Rumor, conjecture, what have you, is just that.

'projects'...as in estimates...guesses...a supposition, if you will...or conjecture on the part of a writer seeking clicks for the bait he's casting.

Numbers are out there. Not definitive numbers. 8300 approved deals worth upwards of $80mil. At least they’re real endorsements and not pure pay to play.

Those upset about people complaining blow my mind. Everyone forgets what fam means: fanatic- unreasonable love or support for a team. Prop late invested in Clemson. I could have a nice vacation home if not for my investment. So, yeah. I’m angry. Embarrassed. Inset expletive here. To call people rolls for pointing out faults is laughable. Sure, we have trolls. An old proverb says the truth should not be taken as an insult!

I’m minding enjoying the no pressure season. Not as much as planning for post season trips though.

I agree with the sentiment. However, I keep saying THIS was the year that our "something to prove" was going to bare fruit. All indicators were saying that Clemson may have something here. A program built, returning starters and gaps filled by using the portal. Something has gone wrong with our "Moneyball" approach. And I've seen reason after reason thrown out in this forum.

I think we have some real soul searching to do in what little time there is between the last game and the first practice. The tough questions need to be asked. Then even tougher decisions have to be made.

As the old saying goes...

The answer resides somewhere between the extremes. Spend, spend, spend, if such exists seems to have a short shelf life...like, right up until the first loss. Possibly the confusion lies with portal=pay...I'm not sure that's the case...so, back to Indiana/Vandy as possible examples. Now, those players with 'something to prove' may have 'pay me' as their motivation, so what happens next year, whether at IU/Vandy, or elsewhere?

Money has become infused into sports...and so has the darkness that tends to follow. It's just the latest drug to deal with. Regrettably, it's also slashing the joy of sport for many folks.

At day's end, hopefully ethics and integrity can somehow remain relevant. If not...games over...to me.

I hear what you're saying. And there are those kids out there. But in recruiting, we can talk about our traditions, rubbing the rock, running down the hill, developing young men, education and all that.
Other programs have it too. ND can talk all they want about Rockne, Michigan about Yost, Schembechler and the Big House. They're not interested. They want to know (upfront):

Am I going to start?
How much am I going to get paid?
What is my path to the NFL?

And what I'm getting at (maybe doing a poor job of it) is that the individualism that has been infused into team sports undermines the "something to prove" team mentality. You'll see that with the teams built out of the 2-3 star talents. And it probably won't be sustainable. Once the coach, team, player proves it, they are probably gone the next year.

If he knew it was coming then why in the #### did he let his program fall flat on its face while still making 11M per year. ???

2) we have the “all heart” all star team and they run around with concrete boots on. Slow as dirt.

Dabo still got the hook in a bunch of y’all

God forbid you put any blame on him

Looks like you are just looking for who to blame while others are looking for the solution ...... not that we can solve it ourselves, but trust the ones that got us into this situation can get us out. They deserve the chance ..... even if it takes more than one year!

Plus Vandy and IU do have quality talent (stars) They choose to use the portal to get it.

This thread gives you an outlet. You're welcome.

You see, this is why discussions seldom take place, because whiny little dudes like you are incapable of such, but throwing a tantrum...spewing the latest talking point that you didn't generate...yeah, that's so typical.

Thanks for trashing the thread with your toxic waste.

and toxic is people that continually make excuses for Dabo. That is a problem within the program. Lots of yes men.

That is just as problematic. I know its the job of several posters on the board, but at what point do you want to face reality? None of them want to hold the person in charge of all of it accountable. Its just blame everything else.

You don't think Dabo knows this team has issues? I'm sure he has been all over this teams' behinds all year. Coaches, players, etc. He's not going to make major changes midseason. That's not who he is.

You can have the '85 Bears roster but if you can't find the buttons to make them click it doesn't matter. I'm sure Dabo is searching for those buttons but has yet to find them this year.

Of course he is aware but it was Dabo that let it get to this point. It has been abundantly clear there has been a steady decline over the last 4-5 years. Dabo’s ego got in the way of him admitting that. He refused to change when it was clear change was needed.

And again a certain sect of the fanbase can’t admit Dabo was responsible for that. It’s everything else that is wrong EXCEPT for the one in charge.
