LOL. Their one song that didn't even break into the top 25? Seriously? Not even close.
Biggest is definitely James Brown or Chubby Checker. Peabo Bryson would be in the next tier. For biggest bands, it's without a doubt Hootie and the Blowfish, even if a lot of y'all won't want to admit it. Marshall Tucker and Edwin McCain would be next.

And no, other than a few times I happened to be where they were playing and was asked by them to sit in, I was not a member of that band - although I was asked to join them for a tour of Sands Hotels in Vegas Hawaii and other locations. I declined.
The band I was a member of was an offshoot of the Medallions and also from Greenwood, SC - The Piecces of Eight.
We were even lesser than the Medallions in your eyes as "Lonely Drifter" was only #59.

And while you have a right to your opinion whether musically qualified or not, I strongly disagree with you with respect to your choice of Hootie and the Blowfish. They certainly gained a fair amount of recognition from the college crowd at the time, but in my opinion their "Hold Your Hand" was one of the most painful musical abortions I've ever heard. Also in my opinion, that song was just awful by any measure of musical talent.

They had one song that wasn't even that big. That's the point. And I know a lot of the Medallions. Used to go to the Hash House and hang with them. Nice guys (at least the old guard, the new ones not as much). But they were a no named band. If you ask the average person around the country, or even on this board, they're not going to have a clue who they are.
And it's not about if you like Hootie or not. The question was who is bigger. Rucker is huge. Hootie was so pervasive in the mainstream culture that they made a whole Friends episode about going to one of their concerts.

James never changed his strings either. Said the dirt and grease gave them the funk. Little known fact when Alan Woody joined the Allman brothers band, Greg told him to play the parts real simple like R&B and played him some Jamerson songs, and which conflicted directly with what Dickey had just finished telling him which was to keep up with him note for note and go up high on the neck with him! Woody told Dickey there was so much going on with 2 guitars, piano, and organ that the only thing left to play was something simple.

Charlie Dailels was born in SC.

a travesty that they aren't in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!
The best of today's generation is Marcus King, without a doubt...great guitarist, singer and songwriter and can perform blues, country. rock or jazz.
