CFB national champs since 1975... we're in good company

Jan 13, 2017, 1:28 PM

Why 1975? Because that was my freshman year at CU, and that's when I really became fanatical about college football. I'd watched college football games on TV, of course, but more as a casual fan... in the same way that I watched the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. I'd been to a couple of Furman games at Sirrine Stadium, but that was it. Never been to a bigtime college football game. But that all changed the morning of Sept 13, 1975 when the band came marching by Norris Hall and woke me & my roommate up...

So that's where it starts for me. And since that time, here's the teams and number of nat'l titles:

77/78 is a good benchmark because of scholarship limits

Get one more and we are top 3 in the country...

...having the most recent of the "3s" puts us at the top of the "3" list behind Miami.

some of those (like Michigan) should be 0.5

Jan 13, 2017, 1:37 PM

several years had split Champions.

Yep, in those 41 years there were 47 "champs"... several split between AP/UPI.

edit: in fact, that's such a good point I'm going to redo this with 1/2 titles

I had friend years ago , big Penn St fan

Jan 13, 2017, 2:47 PM

and he lived in Greenville from 88 to 90.He would tell me from time to time that Clemson was not in the same class as Penn St, that Clemson didn't have as much history and tradition and that our 81 Title was "suspect".He didn't like me bringing up the beat down that Clemson put on Penn St in the Jan 88 Citrus Bowl (Joe Paterno's worst bowl loss ever). He said it was just a meaningless bowl and Penn St. could care less.I haven't talked to him in awhile but I have thought about calling him.If i did he would know why I was calling since we always talked football. lol With 2 national titles now Clemson is elite and that's the end of the argument.

Crazy to think with 1 more championship we would be tied with FSU and UF...

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.
