Some odd stats on Clemson/ Louisville

Oct 3, 2016, 12:10 PM

Clemson gave up 568 yards against Louisville on Saturday night, but only gave up 36 points in a 6 point win (we apparently love winning by 6 points). FSU lost to Louisville by 43 and gave up 62 points, yet they only gave up 530 yards of offense. However, Louisville had to run 99 plays against Clemson to get to 568 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per play versus the 8 yards per play they had against FSU in 66 plays. Clemson actually averaged more yards per play against Louisville than Louisville did against FSU, gaining 8.18 yards per play on 62 plays. Clemson also averaged 6.5 yards per rush.

Here's how those numbers compare to Louisville's averages so far this year:

Average Total offense: 659
Total Offense against Clemson: 568 (-91)

Average yards per play: 8.22
Yards per play against Clemson: 5.7 (-2.5)

Average rushing yards: 309.2
Rushing yards against Clemson: 273 (-36)

Average yards per rush: 7.09
Yards per rush against Clemson: 5 (-2)

Sacks allowed before Clemson: 3
Sacks by Clemson: 5

Average passing: 350
Passing against Clemson: 295 (-55)

Average scoring offense: 58
Points against Clemson: 36 (-22)

Those are interesting stats. That tells me that Louisville had to work hard for their yards, and that if Clemson had held on to the ball we could have had a very comfortable lead at the end of the game.

do the averages you use include the Clemson game or are they

Nice analysis. Tks. Got me thinking about penalties stats.

Oct 3, 2016, 1:30 PM

Clemson's penalties, 2016

vs AUBU - 6 for 55 yds
vs Troy - 7 for 71 yds
vs SCST - 7 for 59 yds
vs GTEC - 10 for 80 yds
vs LVIL - 6 for 61 yds

Louisville's penalties, 2016

vs UNCC - 10 for 49 yds
vs CUSE - 9 for 100 yds
vs FLST - 5 for 56 yds
vs MARS - 12 for 143 yds
vs CLEM - 11 for 104 yds

Bonus:

Clemson's penalties in 2015 - 5.6 per game for 46.3 yds per game
Louisville's penalties in 2015 - 7.5 per game for 62.6 yds per game

From this vanish point, the game was called fairly, but both teams have gotten a bit more undisciplined overall this year.
