Heres a realistic look at the numbers if we join the Big12

We'll probably break even. I support a jump to the Big 12 but we'll break even right now. FSU did a study and their travel expenses will go up 40%. If we join the Big 12 and they renegotiate a contract, we'll stand to get around 21 million a year. That extra money will go towards our travel expenses.
Here are the reasons you jump though:
1. We will have our third tier rights. We stand to make millions a year by being able to seel our games in FB, BB, and even baseball to local networks.
2. We will get bigger bowl payouts with the Big 12 money structure. We would make more money off of going to the Big 12's 4th bowl than we made off of going to the Orange bowl bc of the equal revenue share in the ACC. Keep in mind the Big 12 will send two teams to the BCS so we'll have to finish 5th to go to their 4th bowl.
3. Its only a matter of time before the Big 12 expands to 14 and 16 teams. They will eventually pick up more eastcoast teams to suit us, FSU, and WVU. That will cut back on our travel expenses at that time.
4. The ACC is falling further behind everytime we get a contract. The Big 12 has the potential for growth which will help us in years to come. In 1997, the ACC had the best TV deal in sports, now we're 5th. Follow the trends.
If you people wanna wait for new leadership once Swofford's out then be my guest. But do you really think UVA, Maryland, Duke, UNC, and others will let a FB-minded person take over? The ACC has had their chance to adapt to the new landscape and they havent.
A move to the Big 12 is about the future, not today. Youve got to look at this move and be able to see further then right infront of your face. Look at their TV contracts and the ACC's. The ACC is 17 million a year over 15 years ON AVERAGE. We wont actually see 17 million for another 7 years, and by that time we will be negotiating a new contract. That means we'll be in this contract for several years to come and then get a new one before we see any benefits from this one. ESPN ripped us off and we just took it.

of the finances involved.
As you say, the money may not be considerably more in the immediate future, but the likelihood that new conference circumstances will provide much greater income after a few years is almost non-debatable

Are you counting the re-negotiated Big 12 contract with FSU & Clemson adding value, the Big 12 championship game, and the extra revenue from the Big 12-SEC bowl?

the addition of FSU and Clemson as it did when TCU and WVU joined... 5 million per school per year. Since FSU and Clemson would be two new markets, where as WVU and TCU was only one, its probably an under-estimation. I didnt count the revenue from a Big12CCG or the new bowl. With all that, we would probably do a little better than break even.

I think it could effect recruiting in a positive and negative way. Every year I see kids that come down to Clemson, UGA, UF, Bama, and LSU, or some combination of that. Its Clemson and 4 SEC schools. A big reason we lose kids like that is bc we have the ACC branded on us. So while some kids wouldnt come to us for the reason the parent pointed out in the article, others would come to us for a chance to play in a big conference. There are times we're neck and neck with SEC schools, but being in the ACC is too much to overcome. Being in the Big12 could help to nutralize that advantage those schools have on us. Dabo does an amazing job of recruiting inspite of being in the ACC. Imagine what he could do promoting Clemson while being in a FB conference.

of SC. When the article with the parent came out, I asked my Dad if it wouldve bothered him when I played at Clemson. He said not at all. There are parents out there who wont like it, and there are those out there who would like to see their kids play in a bigger conference.

So how does the more money make us more competitive argument hold water? You said yourself that in 1997 the ACC was the highest paid conference. How did that work out for us? More money obviously doesnt' equal championships.

Back then being number 1 wasnt that big of difference than being number 5 in the TV pecking order. Revenue streams werent nearly what they are now. Besides, the ACC put all of their money into BB, which was a poor decision bc we were improving ourselves in a sport that was headed for a downward spiral. 15yrs ago, TV contracts were around 50/50 FB and BB. Now theyre 80% FB. Once the trend began to change, our BB schools made no adjustment to keep up with the changing landscape. The ACC has continued to fool itself into thinking BB still matters to the nation.

Well when West was fired after the 1998 season Clemson had the money to bring in Tommy Bowden, who was the hottest up-and-coming coach in college football at the time. Without that revenue Clemson might not have had the money to land him.
Having a lot of money might not equal a championship, but not having as much as your rivals will almost certainly equal few championships.

and Carolina. That would most likely prompt VT and NCST to join the SEC. According to that Outkick the Coverage article, that could lead to SEC teams getting 83 mil each from the SEC Network every year.

How much would an SEC Network be worth at $3 a month?
Try $1.3 billion.
That's over $83 million per team.

anyone that thinks CU will make millions over 3rd tier games that no one wants to broadcast just needs pie in the sky numbers to back up their empty theories.That the Furman/PC/SC State game(the only ESPN doesn't already broadcast) every year will bring in big $$$ is a joke.

tier rights, but FSU brings in 6.5 million a year from it. Everytime we have a FB, BB, or baseball game on a non-ESPN channel, we get money from that. Its ours alone. We dont have to divide it up at all.

I havent really looked up what our contract was with Raycom. Im not sure what the deal was there. I just know that the money we were earning in 3rd tier rights the last several years will be gone now. If you look at FSU, this new TV deal gives them more money from the ACC TV deal, but takes away from them the money from 3rd tier rights. Its actually a net loss for them I believe. Im still trying to find Clemson's 3rd tier money.

Cant find the Clemson numbers, but here they are for FSU...

Old TV deal was 13 million per school + 3rd tier rights.
FSU= 13 million + 6.5 million= 19.5 million per year
New TV deal is 17 million per school with no 3rd tier rights.
FSU= 17 million.
Thats a net 2.5 million loss for them.
I would imagine our revenue is similar to theirs in that respect or we wouldnt be talking to them and the Big12 like we are. I really wish I could find Clemson's numbers.
