So the US soccer federation just announced they are allowing players

Jun 10, 2020, 10:36 PM

To kneel for the National anthem before games. I’m sorry, I try and not post political stuff on here and I know this isn’t Clemson related BUT... IF YOU THINK AMERICA IS AN EVIL PLACE AND WON’T STAND FOR THE ANTHEM THEN YOU SHOULDN’T AGREE TO REPRESENT THE TEAM IN THE FIRST PLACE! ... again sorry it’s political and not Clemson related. I’m also a big US soccer fan and this enrages me.

All these sports would quickly disappear without fans.

Jun 10, 2020, 11:14 PM

If Americans care about their country and boycott all kneelers it will stop immediately. If we care much more about our entertainment than our country then our country is already lost and we will all suffer the consequences.

Whichever we choose, we will get exactly what we deserve.

Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.

Agreed. This is ridiculous. The Washington monument will be torn down next.

I am overwhelmed by the arrogance of this concept.

It’s the US National Soccer team. If you are so disgusted by this country or something about it that you cannot see fit to stand for the national anthem, then please do not choose to take a paycheck to represent the country on the soccer field.

Sport has truly lost its appeal to me. I can’t believe it’s true but that’s what it’s come to, for me.

I'm with you man, I've been done with nba for awhile and NFL has taken less and less of my time by the year I no longer play fantasy. I'm done with NFL now. My fear is they are taking away all I have left for sports, college athletics. This is not my country anymore. I want it to burn down and for the communist rats to live in the rubble.

Why not just watch for the sports and not worry about it? The NFL doesn't even show the guys taking a knee anymore. Just watch the game and enjoy. 3 guys or so take a knee so you will give up on sports? Weird. Football is as American as apple pie.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I mean, that’s clearly one perspective. I think we have

a different one. There is way too many unappealing components of the NFL at this point for me to continue to support it.

There HAS to be a better way to peacefully protest that

Jun 11, 2020, 9:05 AM [ in reply to I am overwhelmed by the arrogance of this concept. ]

doesn't include disrespecting the flag.

I don't know enough about soccer to suggest - but in baseball - take a knee right before the first pitch of each inning (you know, a time when people are actually watching).

Don't look at it as disrespecting the flag. Look at it as pointless and laughably ineffective virtual signalling by a bunch of people who have nothing of value to contribute to the conversation.

Jun 11, 2020, 12:25 AM

make such a statement?

Maybe first they should try to make the statement that they can beat Trinidad and Tobago when the World Cup is on the line! Have some respect for yourselves before you see fit to tell us how you feel about the country you chose to represent of your own free will.

I agree. Our men's team is never going to come around. Then we have to act like women's soccer matters at all worldwide.

I don't like the kneeling.

I also support the right of people to kneel. The fuss over it is insane but that is another story.

My question is this: Why bother even playing as a representative of the US on a national team if you don't respect the playing of the anthem? Just bow out and not participate. This is different than playing on a league team.

They didn't say the US was an evil place or that they don't love the country as a whole. They just want to bring attention to what they see as injustice. Big deal. It's their choice. I guess it's kind of like the two guys at the 1968 Olympics and people freaked out. They freaked out about nothing in the end.

Re: So the US soccer federation just announced they are allowing players

They just want to bring attention to [strikeout: what they see as injustice] themselves.

If they really wanted to bring attention to an injustice, they would be out doing something real about it instead of grandstanding (grandkneeling) in a way that millions of people are offended by. No one will be offended if you took time in every interview you ever did to bring attention to you favorite injustice, if you dedicated most of your acceptance speech for your awards to your cause, if you tout your favorite injustice on all your social media feeds, etc.

Remember in cancel culture "being offended" is the hallmark of determining when people should be fired from their jobs, etc. So those millions of people who are offended about the disrespect to the flag, the nation, the nation's armed forces should result in kneelers being summarily dismissed. But apparently only if the right people are "offended" for the right reasons.

Jun 11, 2020, 7:45 AM

I have to disagree with you on one point. There are some subject matters that people are offended if you bring up, no matter when or how. Remember “shut up and dribble”? So if you are going to offend people, might as well do it in the flashiest way possible. The more people they make uncomfortable and mad, the more attention they bring to their cause anyway. Also, protests are not meant to be comfortable in the first place.

You’re argument might make a little sense if you’re talking about club soccer, though I still would not agree. In international soccer, the anthem which is purposefully done to honor the two countries playing in the match? If you don’t want to honor your country then you shouldn’t be playing for them.
