Smart reading for the all the "Fire Dabo" scorched earth tantrums

Highlights of Dabo as coach of Clemson: Recorded just one season with single-digit wins in 14 years Won eight of the past 10 ACC championships Reached the College Football Playoff seven times in the past 10 years.
Weirdest stat: Won more than 40% of the ACC league titles while coaching the team for just 24 percent of the total period since ACC conference began competition in 1953
Swinney isn’t falling short of the standard at Clemson. He invented the standard. - Tommy Bowden did a nice job with the Tigers and never won more than nine games - Tommy West and Ken Hatfield produced one double-digit win season in their combined nine years - Those three held the job for 17 years (1990 to 2007) and did not claim a single ACC championship.
https://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa-football/clemson/news/clemsons-dabo-swinney-ridiculous-put-him-hot-seat/6b0c3cfc77a218b212245f96
In my book, Dabo has earned the right to find his solution for getting Clemson back to the standard he set.

Seems to me like the "participation trophy" people would be those who are content settling for mediocrity because we were good a year ago. People demanding accountability are pretty much the exact opposite.

The graduation thing is stupid and a scam. We made up majors for football players to take. We have tutors doing all the work for them. The fact that we have graduates who probably can't read demonstrates that.

Everything you said is true.
It's also true that at times Dabo is his own worst enemy because of the things he says and how he responds to things not going well.
If he had said this season, "There are things we need to work on." instead of "Things are fine." we wouldn't be having these conversations.
Same thing when DJ was starting which is what gave him a shorter leash to being questioned this time.

Most of the "fire Dabo" crowd is also convinced whoever his replacement is will do a better job. There is no guarantee of that. If you look across the history of CFB one truth stands out. Schools that fire coaches for not winning pretty or being good not great usually begins a 10-20 loop of fire, hire, fire, hire chasing success. Eventually finding some patience before it turns around. Dabo is the best coach for Clemson period.

The reality is that the “Fire Dabo” ones represent only the minority, but unfortunately are the keyboard majority on the message boards. It’s amazing what alcohol and a Coot pedigree will do to some people. It’s also easy to cast judgement externally, when you have no clue what is going on internally.
Dabo definitely deserves a chance to fix the issues. He has earned that right! Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you realize change is necessary. He’s at that point now. How he manages it all going forward will tell the story.
That said, all of college football, the fans, and “analysts” have been waiting to write the negative narrative about Dabo and Clemson for years. Success done in the right way always breeds haters, not only from the outside but also from within.
Go Tigers!

Our fanbase and the media gave had their say and it's time for our Tigers to do something about it
That being said, you are correct in all you say but this isn't a this year only thing, it's been said over and over for the past few years that something is wrong and all Dabo does is tell everyone to suck it like HHH and D-X... His own stubbornness and pride created this situation and I'm excited to see if he can work his way out of it.

I don’t understand there being two extreme camps. Every word you say is true. And he deserves to fix the course. But, he needs/needed to be convinced the course needed to be fixed. He has what it takes to turn it around but has to realize it needs to be. That is my only beef with him. He can be stubborn and while I know this is unpopular, he can be prideful. I will never wish we would lose games. However, he needs to see things are down over the last few years. Yes we made the playoffs last year but we weren’t great. On the flip side, I would argue that we really aren’t that far away. I think people think there is some great quantum leap to next level. I will agree that we were a few plays away from beating lsu and Georgia tech. It’s also true that we were a few plays away from losing by 21 and losing to Troy. He may need to recruit and NIL better but I would also argue he had the talent he needed to be 3-0 but between motivating, coaching etc. we are not maximizing our return on what we do have. Again my argument is that both are true. Dabo can and should fix the program. But he needs to get his hands dirty and do it.

So here's a serious question. How long does Dabo get to coast off of old accomplishments? Does he get to draw the second highest salary in football forever because of old accomplishments? I don't think anyone doubts that Dabo has done great things for Clemson in the past or doesn't appreciate what he's done. Two things can be true: he can both be deserving of a statue but also need to be let go because of his failure to adapt to the modern game.
But let's look at it through a different lens:
2-4 in our last 6 post-season games 3-9 in the last 5 years against ranked opponents We have lost by an average of 13 points against ranked opponents 1-5 in our last 6 games against Power 5 competition Recruiting has fallen by 8 places in the last 5 years We have seen Dabo fill the coaching ranks with his closest friend and family, giving them millions of dollars every year of taxpayer and fan money, when they objectively are not qualified for the positions. And this is with Clemson having the second highest paid coaching staff and being the second highest paying NIL team in the ACC
The snapshot is very different if you look at 5 years instead of 10 or a random 14 years. And I don't know of any job in America where you can tell your boss "Look at how good I was 10 years ago and keep making a paycheck." Dabo is paid absurdly well, more than 125 professors put together (and Clemson is a university first). And he's paid for one reason. To keep Clemson on top and continue adapting to the game. He has shown no ability or willingness to adapt. In fact, when confronted with the weaknesses we are seeing, he threatened Clemson ("If they're tired of winning....") That's not appropriate for an employee. That's corruption and holding a team hostage.
So yes, his seat should be hot. I love Clemson. Dabo is just an employee of Clemson, no matter how much the cult thinks he's bigger than it. I've been warning people on here for 2-3 years now because I saw the writing on the wall. I do not want to wait until the team is in complete shambles, but would like someone else to take the reins while the team is still salvageable. If Dabo doesn't show exactly how he will fix the issues, and show he will let our highly paid and qualified coordinators do their job, I want him gone. We can build him a statue after he's out the door.

Can you give one example of a coach in the modern era who won a NC, let his program fall out if the top 25 then was able to rebuild into a top five program? Wondering why a smart person thinks it is possible?
We have multiple issues but QB is the most important position on the field. When a QB can’t find or hit a wide open receiver, why would you not give the next guy a chance? It’s not not like we could be much worse than 1-3 with next years starter getting experience.

Exactly. I think there are only two examples: Bob Stoops (won the title in 2000, fell off, made the playoffs in 2015) and Joe Paterno (won titles in 82 and 86, had a long run where Penn State sucked, then finished #3 in like 2005). But neither ever won another title, had a very long string of mediocrity in between them, and both ended up being pushed out for losing too much. And both traded up by getting rid of those coaches before the teams were destroyed.

Paterno got pushed out because of scandal. There was pressure to get rid of him because the program he built was performing to standard. But to those who would throw out that the game had passed him , or any other offer coach, by then nite how he brought the program back to relevance before he was terminated.
Whether Dabo does what it takes to right the ship is yet to be seen, but he has what is necessary to do so. That it might take some time to get the ingredients back in place should not be a surprise.

We have been declining for 5 years. He should have seen the signs and started changing course at some point. Either he recognized the issues, has been trying, and is failing, or, he didn’t even see any problems until now. Both options do not suggest that he is capable of fixing things. We are arguably in a worse position now than we were in when he took over as interim.

You are asking an already statistically improbable question. How many coaches have even won a NC and are still coaching? How many who have won a NC and are still coaching have their team out of the top 25? That may prove your point even more but is the n = 1? So of course your answer is 0.

Don't forget to add the fact of how many coaches have won a NC then had the entire landscape of college sports turned on its head in the middle of their tenure? Even the mighty Saban didn't stick around to swing at that curveball. These are different times. It took a while for Dabo to get Clemson to the top of the mountain before. I have no doubt he can do it again. The "fans" calling for his job for the most part have NO IDEA how to act when the team isn't top 10 every year. Then again, todays youth across the spectrum feels like if things aren't going their way, BURN IT DQWN!

We are closer to top 100 than top 10. We have a solid roster with enough talent to be top 10 but lost to a good LSU team and two very average teams. The fact that Dabo is unwilling to at least give someone else a try at QB tells me he is unwilling to change. I am not under the assumption that another coach will have immediate success but hate to see Dabo flounder trying to explain what went wrong. Would rather see him go out with dignity rather than struggle for a few years before being forced out. He can do TV for a couple of years then try his hand at rebuilding another program. After a reset, I would expect him to have success

So much of what he did to build us toward greatness is largely irrrelevant in this era of CFB. He had it set up perfectly for the era when he was so successful but you might as well use 1981 as justification for us to keep things the same way at this point.
Paw Journey, slides in the facility, etc don’t mean near as much to future NFL draft picks as a fat paycheck that they can use in any way they please (surprise!)
I don’t want him fired by any means but I do hope he adapts. I know he can, just hope he won’t be too stubborn to actually do it.

Dabo has pushed the "easy button" for years on is coordinators and coaching hires. This team senses this and is just mirroring what they see in his leadership. Said another way, they are collectively doing the same; pushing the "easy button". Until Dabo starts to hold himself to a higher standard of actual on-field results over his current friends and family first policies we'll get more of the same crappy results form the team.

I agree with your point but comparing to previous coaches isn't apples to apples.
In top of facilities, coaching staff combined salaries, and top paid head coach.
I’m not saying he should be fired. What Clemson gives they can take away, and it's a bit more of a challenge.

Key note all those are past achievements. We have had bad starts the last three seasons. Dabo's nepotistic hiring of no good position coaches and refusal to adapt are destroying this program. If he wants the best is standard fire the wr and RB coaches who are not the best for those positions as a starter

JFC - he’s replaced the OC, the DC, and the O-line coach with big name coaches from outside the program. This “nepotism” drumbeat is one of the lowest iq arguments imaginable. First, hiring people with ties to the program is not nepotism. And he built us into a 6 time playoff team filling position and analyst roles this way. If anything, listening to rubes like you and hiring Riley, Luke, and Allen is what is showing demonstrable decline. And since he did exactly what the idiot mob demanded now you’re shifting your argument to position coaches being the problem.

While I agree with most of your points I have to balk at hiring Riley, Luke, and Allen pert. Sure neither seem to be clicking at the current time but both were very highly regarded and sought after. Not every hire will be a perfect fit regardless if it was a "nepo" hire or not. I don't believe that's what you were implying, just thought I'd get on my soapbox. I will say after seeing all of Clemsons QB/DL play be stagnant to regression I'd like to see a couple new position coaches. WR and QB mainly, but I'm with you that not every position coach needs to be ran off just because of their ties to the Tigers.
I will bang the drum I've been pounding for a few years though and say this. One major issue they have every year is getting pushed around in the trenches. Its time for a change there. Having some of the physical specimens Clemson has had over the past 10 years that fail to live up to their size is just mind boggling. S&C needs to be addressed.

I think you're just reiterating my point a little more politely. He's done exactly what the mob has asked and not only has it not brought the instant change they were convinced would happen, we've regressed. There are lots of variables at play. But the TNet herd is ill-equipped to offer any advice.
As for S&C, "Fire Batson" was a common refrain on here from the start of Dabo's tenure until probably 2014 or 2015. Anyone with any connections to the college football world new Batson was world class and an absolutely an asset to Clemson. I'm not as plugged in as I was then. I don't know if I'm supposed to believe that his pending retirement has taken the edge off. But we're gonna find out if change makes a difference there real soon.

The “obvious decline” crowd are trying to tie this season into a negative pattern. Problem being the previous 5 seasons would probably rank around the 4th best 5 year span (non-overlapping years) in the programs history. Dabo’s success has distorted the expectation to a ludicrous degree. I believe we’re one of 5 teams to have made the playoff twice in that span. We’re around 10th in total wins and ranked wins in that span.

In no reality given the talent level should Clemson have lost the Georgia Tech AND Syracuse.
There is zero excuse. None

By that logic, there was "no excuse" to lose to Pitt (actually far less) in 2016 yet you are still here. Acting like absolutes apply to college football is idiotic. Old Dominion has a transitive win over Alabama and Georgia this season. So inexcusable!!!!

He's also the highest paid coach in Clemson history and it's not even close even adjusted for inflation.
No we cant fire Dabo. If we did we would have fired the 2 best coaches in Clemson history (Ford & Swinney)
But I absolutely believe we should hold him accountable and he should hold himself accountable.

I agree with everything you’ve got here. While there are some crazies calling for a firing- they either forget what it was like pre-Dabo or are new to the Clemson family. However the majority of fans I know simply want the staff to acknowledge directly and without excuse that what was unacceptable in 2008 is still unacceptable and that we’re playing that way today despite the momentous investments made in the program the staff and the players. We want consistency of the standard. That’s what made Bowden so infuriating- always a reason why we fell short on effort or strategy or execution. Dabo was immediately clear then that it wasnt good enough. We want him to stand by that critique of his own program now. It’s about credibility.

Relative to the ACC it’s us and FSU. Both programs should expect and achieve 10 win seasons annually given the disparity in investment to the rest of the league. Just because we failed to do that for most of our history isn’t an excuse or a justification for not achieving it.

It only took 3 lines of reading your post to know the direction you were headed with this. You were listing all of his past accomplishments and accolades…When that’s all that’s left to tout, it means he’s doing nothing at present. What has he done in the last 5 seasons? Yeah he won an ACC conference championship twice in the last 5 years, but come on…The conference is horrible, and last year he stumbled into the ACCG on pure dumb luck and got matched up against the all mighty SMU Mustangs. lol The playoff appearance was by default
No one is saying that he hasn’t done great things for Clemson. I mean he basically built Clemson into what it is today, but the game has changed over the last few years and he doesn’t want to change his recruiting/coaching style to adapt. That’s slowly making itself more and more evident every year. I love Dabo, but I don’t believe his heart is in it anymore

Dabo's earned the right but He has to have a path. As I said in another post "I'm surprised that folks are happy with maybe an ACC championship and winning a few games and the sad thing is.....that plants the seed to just be okay." Why is everyone so afraid to say enough, should we continue to keep losing????? I can't believe because of an awesome past you're so afraid to say that things are bad and if you don't change this we need a divorce. Stop with the, "we can have a mediocre season if we keep Dabo and if we don't keep Him we may lose more." We Are at the B O T T O M !!!!!!!! Quarterback not accurate, when's the last time he stretched the field?, can't hold the ball, lines getting pushed around, not opening holes for the running back....receivers, can they be called that? And again special teams...Blah. S&C is suspect also! Why In this world do you constantly go on defense and not demand change. We can all agree Dabo is an awesome Guy and a great person. Course that just makes Him a good guidance counselor. You should play football for National Championships and if you don't.....just stop playing Football! Freaking basket weaving. Anyway....Go Tigers!

He is exercising that right.
We’ll see what the shelf life is on that right after the end of next season.

In my IF world, after this season hopefully we leave ACC. Then I would be hopeful that this ship would turned around and have a winning record at the end of next season.
Likewise, IF we DO NOT leave ACC and we DO NOT have a winning record by the end of next year then I lose even more hope.

One of the best post I have read. I agree with you 110%. I believe Dabo is trying to run a great program that will not blow up the Clemson finances. Unfortunately, the landscape of college football has changed so much that Dabo will have to make some difficult business decisions that will have a financial impact on Clemson Football and the fans.
IMO Dabo’ has tried to remain relevant and stay within his value system and keep much of the Clemson Culture he established from the solid foundation TB left behind for the next Head Coach has been a difficult task.
I have no doubt that Dabo realizes changes must occur but he is trying to make necessary changes without having a 💰💰negative effect to fans, IPTAY members , students and Alumni .
IMO more revenue into Clemson athletics is going to be necessary if we want Clemson Football to climb back on top of the mountain.
People may feel that Dabo arrogant, stubborn, has lack of coaching ability and his time at Clemson is over.
I see Dabo as confident, compassionate, honest, loyal, a great leader and teacher. I feel he is also a great football Head Coach who has accomplished so much for Clemson. He has taken Clemson football to heights we never thought were possible.
Now after difficult start to his 18th year IMO caused by the chaos from NIL, the TP Revenue Sharing along with the chaos caused by other factors after 5 years having a bad start.
Dabo has been blasted from several different ways during a time when we should be supporting him and showing how much we believe he can bring The Tigers back to the top.
I have never seen people turn on someone as quickly as have this year because of Clemson’s difficulties. I find it hard to believe Dabo has lost his desire and passion to win games. And I understand why he has snapped back at fans because he is hurting more than any fan because of this year’s disappointing start to a season filled with so much hype.
After being off base about Clemson this season naturally the media is going to blast Dabo so fans will not focus on the incompetence of ESPN, others who call themselves analyst, announcers, former coaches and former players.
I hope before someone post negative comments and opinions about Dabo, his staff and players they will remember the OP and the chaos Dabo and his program battles daily in the new Wild Wild West known as college football. Remember how much Dabo has accomplished at Clemson 🐅🐅🐅.
Excellent OP 👍
