Since We Are All In Speculation Mode, Let's Kick This Around

Dec 7, 2021, 8:55 PM

We know both Venables and Elliot have been pursued for several years to be head coaches. We assumed Venables was happy being the best DC in the country and we assumed Elliot was happy with his paycheck and duties, if nothing more. So, why now? Why do they both decide this is the tear to leave? I cannot imagine they are somehow angry at Dabo or Clemson. I doubt Dabo ran either of them off. I doubt a new AD is going to challenge Dabo in what he has been doing with the program, players or coaches... so why now? It is simply too convenient that both leave at the same time (and maybe the AD too) without there being some sort of back story.

Could get nasty when we cycle back in!

Just speculating! LOL

Are you familiar with how money works?

Dec 7, 2021, 8:59 PM

More money is usually a motivator for why coaches change schools.

Mind blowing, I know.

Thank Lincoln Riley for us losing Brent Venables.

Dec 7, 2021, 9:05 PM

I think the only job that could steal Brent from Clemson was Oklahoma. Nobody expected Riley to leave, and when he did it became the "perfect storm".

It has nothing to do with Venables suddenly deciding this was the year.. it's that the Oklahoma job came open and they offered. Nothing else would have coerced Brent to leave. There is no "back story".

As for Tony, I’d say it’s about the same with Jeff. Got to strike while the iron is hot. USF and Duke are good schools to get your feet wet to build your resume. I’d don’t see any of the 3 as job hoppers and all the jobs still seem like home for them. Not the kind of pressure to be super successful right away. They have time to build their staff and make new connections. They gotta leave the nest at some time.

Those who know best are leaving because

Dec 7, 2021, 9:40 PM

leadership has refused SEC offer again. ACC football is the BIG SUX and with nothing to show for itself is being pushed to the side. The bigger SEC conference, the better Big10 conference... they will dictate moving forward.

that what you had in mind?

I really had nothing in mind but this makes some sense. I hardly think the program is falling apart, but I also think the timing is too curious to ignore.

Re: Those who know best are leaving because

No back story. As posted several days ago, bv left because of the conversation he had with his daughter. The other reason I was so confident bv was gone when I posted last week because I remember reading and listening to an interview where he talked about how close he was to accepting the auburn job.

And there was 2 jobs he would take. Kansas State now. Not 5 years ago when boys on HS teams but the last 2 years. Nothing to gleam from that.

As for DRad, look at the jobs he's pursued over last 2 years. He's a Hopper, a fixer. Clemson was a perfect project for him. Look at what he's brought to here. Nothing much big left. Plus he only made 300k. Miami give him cash, a big major rebuilding to glory days and it's retirement home. So, once again no story there.

As for Tony. He's pursued and always said when timing right, he'd move. We've been in midst of 6 year run that's taken us to natty and deep into January. Who really wants to miss that. That's coaches dreams to be a part of that. Plus, not many hires in Jan. This year, he's taken a hit from fans and more importantly, the media. That could be pushing him some to prove his doubters wrong. So. Once again, no story.

Just business as usual. And so happened the stars aligned like the weather to create the perfect storm. That's why they're called 1000 year floods. They don't happen often. The conspiracy can mold a theory, but reality is nothing more than timing.

Sorry but BS

Brent didn't leave because of our admin refused an offer from the SEC. Maybe you haven't noticed, but Clemson is fully able to win a national championship from this conference.

And what do you suppose the SEC and Big10 are going to "dictate"? They will not be the governing body of college football.

For the same reasons the Tiger program with the iconic Clemson culture is able to recruit and sign top players, there are and will be top coaches who want to sign up. I'm not worried about DS's options and what he will decide to do.

There is no doom and gloom. ALL-IN at my INN !

It's obvious for BV, but not for TE . . .

Dec 8, 2021, 8:25 AM

BV got a great opportunity. I don't like OK, but let's be objective, that's a great opportunity. It has it's challenges, but it's a good gig.

The TE one baffles me. If he's had other HC opportunities in recent years, and he didn't take them, but now IS (maybe) taking Duke, then why? Is Duke really better than the other chances he got? Or was he merely in the mix for other, better HC jobs in recent years but didn't ultimately get those offers? Given the talk around his prospects in recent years, I would have thought he got offers better than Duke. Maybe not. But I think Duke is a really, really tough gig and not a good move.

In the case of Venables, the perfect situation arose.***

I believe Oklahoma and Kansas St were the 2 that BV would not say no to.

I think Duke would not have the pressure other schools would have and would be patient with someone building the right kind of program as Tony would do. I think he has been in consideration for other jobs and has been offered but never got the right offer from a good school.

Will have to see what Duke decides. I was thinking someone like Louisiana would come after him but they promoted. I do worry a little with both leaving at the same time.

Well said. Duke is a prestige job with low expectations. TE may outperform given 4-5 years to grow the program.

The why now for Venables is simple

Dec 8, 2021, 10:27 AM

Oklahoma came open coupled with the fact that BV's sons are about done at Clemson. That coupled with the transfer portal and Tyler could be in Norman if he so desires.

Elliott seems more of ready to get away based on the way this year went. Virginia might be a solid job but Duke is a death sentence. With the exception of Cutcliff, Duke hasn't had a coach last more than 7 years since 1966. The average tenure of a coach at Duke since 1966 is 6.1 years. Why TE would want that job is a mystery.

DRad is another mystery. First his loyalty to Clemson is a paycheck so he can be replaced. Second, if you would consider Miami after the way they handled the whole Cristobol, Diaz fiasco, then you deserve whatever you get. The whole situation has a slimy feel to it.
