Silver Linings

Sep 20, 2013, 8:50 AM

I don't think anyone was feeling too warm and fuzzy after last night's game (particularly with Timothy and the O-Line play) but there were several positive takeaways IMO:

- Obviously D-Line is starting to play nasty. Great teams have great D-Lines and Clemson's is looking stout! Beasley is a beast!

- Bryant's second half--Great to see MartavIS (not "ious") make some big plays. I think a lot of his problems have been mental and it was huge for him to make some plays.

- Boyd had easily his worst game of the year and still threw for: 250 yards, 3 TDs and ZERO INTs; it would've been easy for him to struggle all game but he shook off a bad start and had a great second half

- McDowell and Brooks continue to impress me; they had some good, strong runs last night, especially considering how the O-Line struggled

- Overall the D looked very solid and continues to improve; other than the late TD helped by 4 (!?!?!) 4th down conversions that came, let's face it, after the game was over, the D gave up 1 score

- We took NC State's best shot, on a Thursday Night, nationally-televised road game, in front of a hostile, drunken-redneck crowd, with ESPN just waiting for us to "Pull a Clemson," struggled for more than a half, and still came out with a W in our division.

Championship teams find ways to win sloppy games. ND did it vs. Pitt last year (and Purdue really); LSU vs. Bama in '11 and Bama vs. LSU in '12--neither of those were pretty games (despite the "that's just SEC defense" excuse); Auburn did it vs. Clemson in '10.

We've obviously got a lot of things to improve upon but we're lucky that we had a double-digit win and not a loss to realize it. It's a long season and we're 3-0.

GO TIGERS!!!

I run the rb's more and TB less personally. generally we ran it fine last night.

DL is getting very good against run and pass with a deep rotation of guys.

secondary tackling is just not good at all. our coverage got better as the night went on though.

Great points. I would add we need to learn how to use passes in the middle and screen passes to RB's who roll off a block to counteract a strong pass rush. Loved Hot Rod and friends!

Well written post ! Tigers struggled last night but still had the talent to overcome. We have a long season in front of us so let's let the coaching staff do what they do and see what happens !
