SEC football is incestuos when it comes to hiring coaches, why not us? He would be a great fit for clemson, and we know he can coach.

Great idea but only if Gregg Popovich or Eric Spoelstra fall through first

I was leaning towards Mark Few or Jay Wright; but the former doesn’t have any recruiting contacts in the southeast, and the latter is a quitter.

A typical misconception for sports fans on a historically underachieving program is that you can attract any top tier coach simply based on the dollar amount on the contract. These coaches are already rich so the allure of even more money is less than you think. This group of coaches start to think about their reputation as they will not accept a job which has been historically difficult as it is too hard to win at a high level and doubly hard to win at a high level for a long period of time. I point back to the last two coot football coaching searches as evidence this is true.

Bennett is a solid human being that I doubt is hugely motivated by money. I doubt he leaves UVA, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
However, Brad has 10 lives and I would not be surprised if he does just enough to hang on yet again.
For the sake of the guys playing, I hope we go undefeated, not for Brad's sake.

Why would any good coach, unless its a smaller school, want to come to Clemson ?

Challenge, Change of environment if things aren't rosy with the AD, more money and promises of facility improvements.
A successful coach at a major school is indeed highly unlikely to leave to come to Clemson.

I am wondering why not for Brad's sake too? I get that many want a change and all the reasons why as he has missed too often during his tenure. But other than that, what has he done to pull against him?

Because I have wanted a change for years. If he finishes bad, he's gone. I can't pull against Clemson though, but if it does continue to go bad, he'll be gone.
I'm not accepting that we can't do better.

I certainly understand the desire for change but pulling against a guy who has done everything else in an exemplary fashion seems odd at best.

How dare he not win as much as they unrealistically expect him to! The nerve!
I have zero anger or hatred for Brad. I said earlier that I hoped this season went so well that he was retained.
I actually still hope the team does so well that Neff is forced to keep Brad.
Having said that, I don't accept that we can't get a coach that is a better recruiter, motivator and end of game coach.
If you think Brad is that man, I accept your opinion, but my wanting to go in a different direction has absolutely nothing to do with anger or hate towards Brad.
I will continue to support the team as I have for 30+ years with my butt in my seat in Littlejohn.
I didn't have anger or hate towards Bowden either, but wanted change then too.

The OPs biggest misconception is that we have more cash than UVA

Our endowment is $1B they have $14B; so, in overall resources we aren’t even in the same stratosphere. Perhaps they don’t spend as much annually or have the revenues we do, but they didn’t get that big wad of cash without having a lot of big money donors. I don’t think they’d have any trouble finding one of their rich alum to help match any offer.

That's considerably more than Brownell makes - almost double - so I assume you're willing to increase our basketball budget to accommodate what it would take to get him?
I ask because many people here say that we spend plenty on men's basketball and don't need to spend more.
Also, Virginia is a much better basketball job than Clemson. While they care about football there, they are arguably a basketball school first and foremost. They have a rich basketball history. Clemson isn't nearly as good a job as he currently has at UVA.
So he's unlikely to even consider Clemson. But if he did, I'm assuming it would take around $7 million a year to get him. That would make him the second highest paid basketball coach in the country (he's currently 7th).
I don't see Clemson spending $7 million on a basketball coach. The perception would hurt our desire to be known as a football school and only a football school. We can't have that.
It's all a moot point, of course, because Bennett isn't leaving Virginia to coach at Clemson. LOL.

any additional funding because that's not the cause behind his inability to win at a high level. We invested $65 Million to improve Brad's opportunities and we've garnered 1.67 additional wins per season since. Spread over 20 years of the renovation's lifespan - that's $2 Million per extra win since.
The right coach and personality will generate additional funding for the program through their leadership. Nothing raises funds and program profile like success. That's how it works. Brad cannot offer that as 14 years of experience has proven out.
Unlike the other program fatalists (JK isn't one - just a straight out troll), Clemson is a completely different beast today than it was back when Brad was hired. Our athletics department drips of success throughout - yet basketball has missed the boat. Potential top candidates out there aren't married to our historic and ongoing shortcomings. More likely there's the opportunity to awake a sleeping giant.
There's something in these hills. Time to invite hoops into that camp and stop with all the excuses.

Why can't we be both a football and basketball school? I'm going to keep dreaming about winning the national championship in basketball, and no one can stop me. I can do that without being disrespectful to others who think differently.

The posters on this tread

Are either high, drunk or both. Number one, the job is not open. Number two, none of the coaches listed on this tread would even take a phone call from Clemson. In case you great "fans" don't know, the word is out among the basketball coaching fraternity -- Clemson is a great place, but Clemson basketball is not a good job. The program has had limited success and most of the "fan" base does not understand basketball. And after one loss or a rough stretch, most of the "fan" base wants a firing. Football will always overshadow basketball at Clemson. That's just a fact. So a guy coaching and having success at a basketball school would not consider coming to Clemson. If there is an opening at the end of the season, whoever is hired will not be here long. That was the pattern before CBB arrived and that pattern will start again. Hire top assistant. One good season. Get the hell out. Wash, rinse, repeat. Let the season play out. Then you can start burning your torches and filling up the AD's e-mail box. The decision will be made based on how the season plays out. And there is still a month to go.
