Serious question

Oct 20, 2024, 8:26 AM

What happens if Clemson , SMU and Miami all finish the regular season undefeated in the conference?? Do the highest ranked teams play for the ACC Championship??

No, it becomes mathematical, not based on opinion of pole voters.

So what’s the progression of the math? Out of conference record , margin of victory, common opponents ?? 🤷🏻‍♂️

No, convoluted formula but since we don’t have head to head comparisons, it will come down to how we did against the common opponents with the best win %s.

So is it important to keep the hammer down and run up as many points as possible??

Re: Serious question

Oct 20, 2024, 8:31 AM

1. Conference record
2. Head to head
3. Overall winning percentage vs common opponents
4. Then it moves to win percentage against common opponents with the added caveat of order of finish in the conference, beginning with the highest-seeded common opponents and moving downward in order of the standings
5. Factor in the combined winning percentage of a team's conference opponent, with the team who faced the better opponents gaining the advantage
6. Next step will be for third-party SportSource Analytics to determine a Team Rating Score at the conclusion of regular season play and the team with a higher score will advance to the Championship Game

Thanks 😊

So the old days of , just win all your games and everything will take care of itself are really over. If these 3 teams go undefeated the rest of the way , and they very likely will, somebody is going to get screwed??

There has always been exceptions to win all your games. Screwing happens often.

Clemson compared to SMU, we need:
-SMU to lose
OR
-BC, Duke, and Cal to lose as much as possible since Clemson didn't play them but SMU did
-NC State, Wake, and VT to win as much as possible since SMU didn't play them but Clemson did

Clemson compared to Miami, we need:
-Miami to lose any game

If we’re 11-1 and ranked in top ten, the ACCCG won’t matter in my opinion, We’ll get in. SMU and Miami likely won’t lose a conference game looking at their schedule. Pitt isn’t that good, All the garbage time points may come back to bite us. But nothing matters if we don’t win out.

Re: Serious question

Oct 20, 2024, 8:44 AM

So if we happen to lay an egg and USC beats us to finish the regular season , it doesn’t affect our situation getting in the conference championship??? I hope I’m interpreting that right?

Re: Serious question

Oct 20, 2024, 8:49 AM

I would assume out of conference games won’t matter in determining the ACC championship game. Now Clemson has 2 ways they can get in the playoffs. 1 is win the ACC. 2 is be left out of the ACC championship game due to Miami, smu, and Clemson being undefeated in conference play. Clemson would need to be 11-1 at the end of the year but there’s now way Clemson is not top 12 at a 11-1 record.

Re: Serious question

Oct 20, 2024, 8:52 AM

That’s ironic, because I’d rather be left out of the conference championship game if 11-1 regular season gets us in.😊

Re: Serious question

Oct 20, 2024, 8:53 AM

If not , we could go to the conference championship game and lose and probably get left out. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Re: Serious question

Yeah but if you win the ACC then you get a bye in the first round of the playoffs. If we’re left out of the ACC championship game then we have to play a team in the first round of the playoffs.

Re: Serious question

Oct 20, 2024, 9:00 AM [ in reply to Re: Serious question ]

That is correct. Only advantage of going to the ACC championship game is to win there and get the first round bye.

It really comes down to who would you rather play in the first round of the college football playoffs? Would you rather have us play Miami/SMU or one of the other bottom eight teams.

I would prefer to play Miami/SMU and get a bye if we win. If we lose to Miami/SMU, consider it a playoff game and we lost.

You are correct. I forgot about the bye. 👍

Re: Serious question

Oct 20, 2024, 9:10 AM

It’s kinda complicated. Here are the official three or more ties teams rules.

1. Combined head-to-head win percentage among the tied teams if all tied teams are common opponents.
2. If all the tied teams are not common opponents, the tied team that defeated each of the other tied teams.
3. Win percentage versus all common opponents.
4. Win percentage versus common opponents based on their order of finish (overall conference win percentage, with ties broken) and proceeding through other common opponents based upon their order of finish.
5. Combined win percentage of conference opponents.
6. The tied team with the higher ranking by the Team Rating Score metric provided by SportSource Analytics following the conclusion of regular season games.
7. The representative shall be chosen by a draw as administered by the Commissioner or Commissioner’s designee.

So, it will come down to names drawn out of a hat most likely.

Rule of thumb is if you need to say a question is serious, it’s not serious.
