That’s funny I thought Abraham Lincoln was the republican

The party is different from what it was in the 1860s.

"Lincoln was a Republican" is why the South was staunchly Democrat through the Civil Rights era. It is only when the "Dixiecrats" became Republicans that it all changed.

Did you not take a history class in school? Or is this the kind of thing that Republicans no longer want taught in history classes?

Fact: Abraham Lincoln was a republican
Fact: Democrats fought civil rights

Opinion: the Democratic Party has changed

The one thing that scares the Democratic Party is a vibrant middle class of minorities and that’s been true since 1860

Fact: LBJ was a Democrat.
Fact: Goldwater was a Republican

Which one supported the Civil Rights Act?

Secession was a lawful proceeding…

1

May 27, 2023, 8:14 AM

The Union should have been arrested for “insurrection”.

The civil war was the death of state’s rights, which was a cornerstone in the founding of America.

Well, my family all fought for NC. You take a very simplistic view of that war. It’s not as cut and dry as you believe. I know you probably think that every southern soldier fought to preserve slavery but that’s just a very ignorant view of history.

They were mostly kids and young men protecting their homes and families. Most did the honorable thing and fulfilled their duty as they understood in the context. I know you can’t understand that and that’s fine.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Secession was a lawful proceeding…

May 28, 2023, 9:46 AM

What were they protecting their homes from? The Big bad American flag that was going to end slavery? How "honorable" is it to murder US troops over that? I thought the narrative was that it was leftists who hate the American flag, not the Christian conservatives. LOL.

The narrative is that it's the leftists (not conservatives) that "hate America". If that's the case, then why were consevatives taking up arms against the American flag, the same one that you claim conservatives "love"? Keep tap dancing Baw.

Re: What do conservatives do on Memorial Day..

May 28, 2023, 9:55 AM

You are resurrecting this bait. Are there no Northern conservatives? They like most Southern conservatives won’t give a thought to the Confederates nor I sadly suspect will most Americans truly reflect on the lives lost in our wars.

Lives taken in war by soldiers are not considered murder. Thankfully that is so. Confederate troops did indeed kill many Union troops and vice versa.

I think you’re naive to think that even a small percentage of Confederate troops fought to preserve slavery. The same is true for the vast majority of German soldiers during WWII.

The average German didn’t fight for Naziism or to exterminate the Jews.

German soldiers didn’t murder American soldiers and vice versa with a few exceptions.

People typically fight for their home team. That’s been true in virtually all wars.

If you’re gonna call Confederate soldiers murderers what do you call the American bombers that fire bombed Dresden.

War is very complicated.

I’m a native Southerner with relatives that died fighting in the Civil War. I’m neither proud nor ashamed of that and like most Southern conservatives don’t really give a shizz over the Confederate flag.

BTW, every slave brought ashore to this country saw the Stars and Stripes flying in various ports of entry, not the Stars and Bars.

Native Americans likewise saw Old Glory flying with the Calvary.

Life is complicated Bham.

I’ll reflect on those that gave the ultimate sacrifice tomorrow, not any flag.

Re: What do conservatives do on Memorial Day..

Most southern conservatives do care about the Confederate flag and confederate monuments and get very butthurt over their removal. 300,000 US troops died from the people who made and carried that flag. Facts and inconvenient truths. But hey, keep whitewashing history.

What history am I whitewashing? I am a life long Southern conservative and most of my family and extended family and friends are too. I can assure you none of us is as fixated on the Confederate flag as you appear to be.

Lincoln unlike you wanted to bring the country together after the Civil War. He unlike you did not consider Confederate soldiers murderers.

Under your reasoning the losing side troops in every war would be murderers?

I don't know a single Southern conservative who displays the Confederate flag in their home, on a flag pole or on a car decal. While there certainly were some folks upset with Nikki Haley's decision to sign the bill passed by the state legislature to remove the flag, that was a vocal minority.

Sure, there can be Confederate flags seen flying not only in he South but also in the North and Southwest which is odd, but most of us have moved on from a war that ended almost 160 years ago.

Our collective history as Americans is checkered with ugliness, but despite that I love this nation and respect our nation's flag, but again your finding the Confederate flag so upsetting makes me wonder why you and others don't advocate for a completely new US flag.

The importation of slaves ended in 1808, thus every slave brought in chains to this nation would have seen Old Glory rippling in the breeze when they disembarked the slave ships.

Native Americans were slaughtered, truly murdered often times including women and children, by US troops. They may have seen the Stars and Stripes before they died.

Our history has some ugly components, but nonetheless I believe in the overall goodness and greatness of this country and am glad the nation was not permanently split apart.

The Confederate flag has indeed been coopted by hate groups and I can fully understand the pain of African Americans seeing this flag, but to assert as you did in the OP about Southern conservatives using Memorial Day to obsess over the Stars and Bars is silly.

I have already reflected on the tremendous sacrifices men and women have made in the service of our country and an American flag is indeed displayed in front of my house.
