Toughest game next year is probably GT

Jan 5, 2015, 12:54 PM

There are several challenging games on the schedule, but I think GT even though it is at home, could be our toughest game. Usually the toughest is either the opening game vs an SEC opponent, FSU or SCar. The SEC opponent was replaced with ND. That won't be easy, but it's at least in the middle of the season and ND is no SEC power. FSU will in all likelihood be replacing Winston, their best TE in decades, their top WR, and 4 of 5 starters on the OL. We should be able to get them at home. SCar has major questions at QB and I can't see their defense being totally fixed in a year. I like our chances with Watson going to Columbia at the end of the year.

GT's option game will be great again as long as their QB stays health. He's the best they've had running it by far. They lose a couple of backs, but it doesn't matter much in their system. They return 4 of 5 OL if I'm not mistaken. With our DL no longer being the strength of our defense next year, it will tough for us to stop them. BV will have to scheme his butt off. We'll probably have to outscore them. If Watson doesn't bring is A-game that day, we'll probably be in trouble.

BV's D has handled GT's option since he's been here

Even this year, the D held up their end.

In order of difficulty IMO (FSU, Notre Dame, GT, Louisville)***

L'ville on the road wont be easy, that's for sure.. I think L'ville on the road is probably just as tough as FSU at home. L'ville gave us all we could handle this past year (I know without DW), and that team played nothing like a Petrino coached team. That was Charlie Strong recruits and they played like a Charlie Strong team - tough, hard nosed D. IF Petrino keeps that D tough (and w Grantham I certainly think that's a real possibility), and they start playing Petrino type O, L'ville is going to be good. They lose Parker and Dye and a few others on D, but Lville will be tough.

ND beat LSU

Jan 5, 2015, 1:01 PM

What's this SEC Power crap? ND is going to be much more difficult than SCar.

And ND has virtually everyone returning..

Kelly has already said that he expects them to challenge for the playoff next season.

We held them to 14 points this year? We'll have some drop off on Defense but not so much as to allow them to score more than 28 points.

With no turnovers on our end, we score more than 28 on them.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gave up a lot of yards to them though. They weren't shutdown

Jan 5, 2015, 1:13 PM

We only gave up 15 points, but they moved the ball on us almost all game. They just ended up settling for a lot a FGs because we buckled down in the red zone. Grady Jarrett is not walking through that door. C. Crawford who is by far our best edge setter is not walking through that door. Dodd who is by far our worst edge setter will be starting. Your expectations are unrealistic of the guys taking over if you think missing those other guys won't matter. This will be a tough game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You don't know anything about Dodd yet.***

Guess who's the SDE in the 4th Qtr vs UGA on those sweeps?

Jan 5, 2015, 1:28 PM

Go back a watch it. It was mostly Dodd who was the non factor on those outside runs by Gurley and Chubb once Barnes was available much with cramps. Why do you think so many people said the outcome would have been different if Crawford had played that game?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You don't think he could improve on setting the edge?

Jan 5, 2015, 1:31 PM

Predicting how he's going to play by the first game of this year is silly.

Well I guess it's good then we got a whole year to coach him

Jan 5, 2015, 1:33 PM [ in reply to Guess who's the SDE in the 4th Qtr vs UGA on those sweeps? ]

up huh???

You think Corey Crawford was always a good edge setter?? Seriously?? I mean, for reals??

Do you even football bro'?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Crawford was never much of a pass rusher

Jan 5, 2015, 1:43 PM

Run stuffing and edge setting was always one of his strengths. I'm not suggesting that Dodd can't improve, but he hasn't shown it yet. All I'm suggesting is that considering all the factors involved, GT game could legitimately be our toughest game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Crawford was never much of a pass rusher

Jan 5, 2015, 1:46 PM

Good point. He never really was a threat to rush the QB. I mean it's now or never for Dodd. It depends on if that reality hits him or not and he decides how good he wants to be and how hard he wants to work at it.

What about Ebo?? I know it's a little early to tell on him yet as well, but he may end up being a good edge setter.

Re: Toughest game next year is probably GT

Jan 5, 2015, 1:49 PM

People are jumping all over you but I agree with your assessment based purely on what each team is losing. Sure, our underclassmen on D can and probably will get better. I still think we should beat GaTech but I also agree that they may be our toughest opponent next year. Sure hope we get a bye or non FBS the week before to get healthy and more practice time on the option.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we could get them for week 4 that would be awesome

Jan 5, 2015, 1:59 PM

We play Wofford week 3 so we would have 2 full weeks to prepare for the option. Even if we don't get them right after Wofford, the Wofford game film will pay huge dividends in correcting our mistakes against the option.

It will be a very good game...

Jan 5, 2015, 5:22 PM

I actually have a bad feeling about it, though. I think you guys will have an awesome home crowd in that game. And you'll be p*ssed off about what happened in 2014 in Atlanta. And I think that with Watson, your offense will obviously be much better than it was in 2014.

I want to see exactly where it falls in the schedule. Off weeks and schedule placement can have an impact. I hope it's not a Thursday game.
