A lot of both the SEC and ACC teams were both a part of the old Southern Conference, established in 1921. Clemson was one of these originals. The SEC broke off in 1933, but those other schools still remained part of the old Southern Conference. Then the ACC branched off in 1953. In time, the Southern became a lower division conference while the two branch-off conferences, SEC and ACC, remained upper tier conferences.
