SEC Expansion

May 11, 2012, 10:38 PM

I've always questioned the allegations that SCar, UF and UGA blocked or will attempt to block Clemson and FSU from the SEC. Wouldn't you think that if that happened, the powers at Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Miss. St. And to a lesser extent, UT and vandy would say 'get over it'? Half the current conference already deals with in-state rivals. Why would they allow other members of the league a competitive advantage by blocking their in-state rivals?

I don't believe SC politicians would allow S Car to block Clemson.

their contstant complaining. Many SEC schools already have instate rivals. It's time UGA, UF and USCjr man up. Clemson needs to playing Auburn, TN, UGA, etc not I-owe-ya State, Kan-zass etc.

I thought it would take 4 votes to block making their little "pact" moot.

Isn't that we would have to have Two Thirds of the vote to get in?

Re: SEC Expansion

The so called gentlemens agreement was never between Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky. It was between Slive and the presidents of the SEC that the additions of teams #13 & #14 would satisfy the renegotiation conditions of the SEC's TV contract which required that 3 markets be gained with any expansion before increases could be discussed. Missouri brought two markets and Texas A&M three.

When Slive asked for that agreement he also is reported to have stated that additions #15 #16 could be for consolidation (which doesn't exclude new markets) but makes the additions within our footprint possible.

I don't believe there is any truth to Florida wanting to exclude F.S.U. or U.S.C. wanting to exclude Clemson. When the erroneous assumption from the first expansion was made that the SEC would not expand within its footprint the fan bases ran with the exclusion angle.

Florida was willing to sponsor F.S.U.'s inclusion in '92. S.Carolina went public with support for Clemson this past Fall. Both of these schools are afraid that when the 9 conference game format is introduced into the SEC that the annual rivalry games will be in jeopardy. The discussion has been favorable for your inclusion so that that those games would not be affected.

Now that this Big 12 garbage is settling down, I'll say something that has been too unpopular to say before. Virginia Tech doesn't want the SEC. And most folks I know don't really want N.C. State. If we ever take two teams from the ACC it will be Clemson and F.S.U. Markets aside you both fill your stadiums, run SEC calibre programs, and travel well. And in spite of TV markets, games between Clemson and F.S.U. and most SEC teams would be highly sought by networks. Take care guys!

The issue here is television coverage, and since the SEC has tv markets in Florida( the Gators) and in South Carolina, the SEC does not need FSU ,or Clemson,That is why they are looking at West Virginia, plus a Texas connection.

Clemson has not and will not ever be invited to join the SEC, you bring absolutely nothing to the table.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good Point..

May 12, 2012, 7:52 AM

Not!, Bonehead chicken plucker. If they took USCjr and Mizzou then they will take just about any school that is breathing. Please go back to the cesspool they call FGF and or Cootlumbia.

Re: Good Point..

May 12, 2012, 11:28 AM

Please stop this ridiculous groveling. The SEC is NOT going to take FSU OR Clemson. It's a closed issue. Move on to something else.

The University of South Carolina has now been a member of the SEC longer than we were in that God-awful Big Four-loving ACC. We are NEVER going back to the ACC and Clemson is NEVER going into the SEC.

Once more for the record re: CU's and FSU's possible SEC admission: the tv audience is not there. Maybe another Texas school for good measure and possibly VT or NC State - new, rich tv markets . . . but NOT Clemson and not even FSU. It's NOT going to happen.

Bawk Bawk Bawk. I would love to see it happen just

May 12, 2012, 12:08 PM

because I know how much it would wreck you coots' pathetic psyche. It's worth it just for that reason alone.

Oh, and when the SEC expands again it's not about TV markets - it's about football branding, and guess what...

fwiw: I've seen numerous statements indicating that SC and UF are NOT blocking, nor do they intend to block, CLEMSON and FSU from joining the SEC. You are probably just falling for coot lies.

Re: SEC Expansion

May 12, 2012, 8:57 AM

i think what you are saying is true. USC wouldnt buck slive. however, i think other schools also have an interest in keeping clemson out. i think ut and uga especially have good reasons to not want clemson in. with the recruiting success clemson has in florida even uf may be hesitant to let clemson in. for usc and those other schools it would just be giving the sec brand to a school that is already a huge threat in a crowded recruiting area.

i think clemson will eventually be brought up as an option again. there would be plusses to the move for the sec. i think they will go for new states first though with an eye towards future cable subscriptions for an sec network. if that doesnt work out i think clemson will be very high on the fall back list.

Haha, you know as well as I do that it ain't gonna happen. At least not in the current era of TV deals. If current TV deals are stretching into 2025, then I will agree then it may be a possibility but not before.

to stop it. The legislature could put some hurt on them. Personally, I hope we stay right where we are.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the SEC Gentleman's agreement is a farce.

May 12, 2012, 11:04 AM

...many SEC insiders have said no agreement ever existed. the SEC sole motivation to expand is to increase the per school revenue which requires expanding the footprint and not canibalizing current markets. anyway, I've alway heard that UGA has more problems w/ Clemson and FSU because they don't want another border rival to go w/ UF, Auburn and USC.

Re: the SEC Gentleman's agreement is a farce.

May 12, 2012, 11:16 AM

Dabo's success recruiting Fla could hurt our chances of going to the SEC, if we can pull all the 5* recruits that we're getting while being in the lowly ACC, just think what this staff could do if the SEC couldn't use conference affiliation against us!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: the SEC Gentleman's agreement is a farce.

May 12, 2012, 12:26 PM

Bottom line is the fact that it would cost all the teams currently in the SEC to lose money if they brought us and Fla.St. in.There would be no more increase in TV's but 30 mil. per team would have to be distributed 2 more ways. This will never happen. It makes no business sense.
