Sammy Watkins

Nov 26, 2012, 4:14 PM

1 hit wonder? I don't get it, how can you be an All American one year, and the forgotten man the next year? Last year, every time he touched the ball people held their breath, this year, we don't even look to get the ball in his hands. Please, someone explain this to me, did whatever sickness he have just wipe him out for the season? I know Nuk played great this year, but Sammy is a better slot receiver than a down the field receiver anyway, so Nuk playing well shouldn't effect Sammy's touches anyway.

I don't know but i 100% agree. It seems like maybe he has some personal stuff he is working through, and is battling some maturity issues.

He certainly hasn't embraced being a team leader, and hasn't been a guy that we count on in the clutch this year.

He's had numerous drops this year at important times in games.

While I felt playcalling was poor in the South Carolina game, I think that Sammy was still off regardless of Morris not trying to get him more touches.

Re: Sammy Watkins

You do realize that he had over 700 yds receiving this year, don't you? I agree he wasn't as big of a factor this year, but to have 708 yds and miss 3 games is pretty impressive too.

Re: Sammy Watkins

Nov 26, 2012, 4:23 PM

You are a fool. Sammy still had close to 1,000 yards receiving despite missing 3 games and being pulled early in 3 more. He will probably pass the 1,000 yard mark in the bowl game. 2 years ago we had zero guys over 700 yards and the last 2 yrs we have had 2 with over 950. You have been spoiled by Morris..... Sammy is still a beast and will be our #1 guy next year without a doubt! Bet the farm on it!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very poor response to this guy

Nov 26, 2012, 4:29 PM

calling him a fool. Sammy did not play up to potential at all. To say that he did is simply a false, baseless statement. It is not what you do, but what you accomplish based on your ability. He had an off year and needs to bounce back. This was a good speculation about a great player who underachieved. We do not know all the answers, but we hope the best for him to return to "All- America" form.

O.K. lets break that down to big games FL St and USCe

Nov 26, 2012, 4:31 PM [ in reply to Re: Sammy Watkins ]

He didn't break 100 all purpose yards in either, disappeared in the second half and didn't have a play longer than 15 yards. I could care less that he had 202 against Wake, anyone of our receivers could have put up that yardage.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he was sick during the FSU game and Morris didn't even..

Nov 26, 2012, 8:44 PM

try to get the ball to Watkins at all against SCU, not even on a reverse.

Since you're an alum, you should know that it is COULDN'T careless

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sammy has 708 yards receiving, not close to 1000.

Nov 26, 2012, 5:02 PM [ in reply to Re: Sammy Watkins ]

I'm not sure where you get your numbers from. He averaged 78 per game. If he had played the entire season, he still wouldn't have gotten 1000 yards. It wasn't a terrible season by any means, but by the standard set as a freshman, it was quite a dropoff.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Sammy has 708 yards receiving, not close to 1000.

Nov 26, 2012, 8:09 PM

I think it's a mental thing. Last year he played the first 8-9 games with the same reckless abandon that he played with in HS. Then he started taking a few hits - something that hadn't really happened before. With each hard hit, he became more and more tentative to the point that he lost his confidence.

He has elite athletic talent but I think he needs to spend some time with a sports shrink.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Drugs...could be the drugs! Once on them, never quite off.

Nov 26, 2012, 8:15 PM

I'm just saying...I don't know anything/hear anything..BUT he was busted for having drugs in his car with buddy..and frankly he hasn't bounced back all the way.

I do like Sammy very much and know he's basically a great athletic and a fine maturing young man who will do what it takes to get back to his Frosh year.

GoSammy & GoTiGERs...alway!

Except for N.B.A., N.F.L., N.H.L., A.F.L., C.F.L., M.L.S., E.P.L, and any other professional sports league you would like to name.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sammy fine

Nov 26, 2012, 8:13 PM

He going to bust it next year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you are probably right

Nov 26, 2012, 8:52 PM

I'm hoping to see vintage Sammy in the bowl game.

Re: Sammy Watkins

Nov 26, 2012, 8:17 PM

Believe he got a little beside himself and neglected hard work this year,bt little did he realize it would be much tougher this year with the past resume he posted. No doubt the conditioning was a factor, hopefully he'll learn from this.

Re: Sammy Watkins

Nov 26, 2012, 8:30 PM

Well, there is always the sophomore jinx.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We didn't even try to pass to the ball to Sammy in the SCU..

Nov 26, 2012, 8:43 PM

game. That was mind boggling, as was how Morris quit using the running backs after the first qtr.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're right you don't get it

Nov 26, 2012, 8:46 PM

cause you're just a fat dude who criticizes players, yet couldn't make it yourself

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well I'm not fat, and I'm not criticizing Sammy

Nov 26, 2012, 8:51 PM

You're right that I couldn't make it, so a point for you, but I'm just wondering what is going on with Sammy this year. He never really found his grove, and other than the Wake game, he never looked that explosive. Like I said, I'm wondering if the injury he suffered against F.S.U. and the subsequent illness took something out of his legs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

grove = groove***

Nov 26, 2012, 8:54 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He missed two early, which was his fault

Nov 26, 2012, 8:54 PM [ in reply to Well I'm not fat, and I'm not criticizing Sammy ]

he missed pretty much another two due to bad virus, and then in Maryland game he hurt his calf I think it was. So basically was out 5 games and still had 700 yards receiving, i'd say nothing is wrong with Sammy

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did you watch the F.S.U. and U.S.C.e game

Nov 26, 2012, 8:58 PM

Can you honestly tell me that was the same player we saw on the field last year. You have to figure that Morris stopped handing him the ball for a reason. He only had 7 rushing attempts after F.S.U. and ran for a total of 5 yards. He ran the ball 32 times last year, and only 13 this year, also his touchdowns went from 12 to 3. I'm not criticizing the guy, I just don't think he was right after the F.S.U. game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he was sick the FSU game, and we didn't even try to pass..

Nov 26, 2012, 10:10 PM

the ball to him against SCU even though SCU was single covering him the whole game.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When you ask is he a 1 hit wonder, i'd say that is

Nov 26, 2012, 8:55 PM [ in reply to Well I'm not fat, and I'm not criticizing Sammy ]

criticizing

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

1 hit wonder? is different than one hit wonder.

Nov 26, 2012, 9:00 PM

That being said, I don't think he was the same player this year as he was last year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ever heard of Sophmore Slump?***

Not the same Sammy, but not for lack of effort,

Nov 26, 2012, 9:22 PM

Suspension, Injury, situations.
There are lots of reasons that Sammy hasn't done what he did last year, but I don't believe that him putting forth effort is one of them.
One thing I have noticed is that he has not been nearly as fast on the field this year. Last year there were plays that he appeared to effortlessly blow past pursuers. This year, a play might develop in the same way as last year yet he is tackled upon making the catch, or can't get enough separation to be able to make a clean catch.
Last, I had a friend that had kidney damage as a result of a dirt bike spill. He was a cross country runner, and for some reason, after that accident it took him nearly 6 months to get his run time back down to the range it was before the accident. (he had no other damage that he knew of, just the kidney issues.) So, being that Sammy reportedly had possible kidney issues after the FSU game, is it possible that the Deuce can't get himself let loose just yet?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree about the kidney thing

Nov 26, 2012, 9:25 PM

I just don't think he had the juice in his legs that he needed. He always looked a little sluggish compared to last year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not the same Sammy, but not for lack of effort,

Nov 27, 2012, 12:28 AM [ in reply to Not the same Sammy, but not for lack of effort, ]

I'll tell you what is absolutely true........Sammy does not relish physical contact. For the past two seasons, when he comes up against a smash-mouth secondary, he wilts and disappears. Just watch the games against a quality defense, then you decide. He can be superman against Wake, Duke, or whoever in the ACC, but the hard-nosed defenses make him just a bystander.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can't wait to watch Sammy! Love him!***

Re: Minor Undisclosed Injuries?

Nov 26, 2012, 9:33 PM

Don't know if anyone else has noticed, but in many games toward the end of this year I've seen Sammy pull up at the end of runs and sort of limp off to the sideline like he tweaked a hamstring - possible his legs just aren't 100% lately?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Possibly due to the kidney thing

Nov 26, 2012, 9:37 PM

My wife was splaining how muscle damage causes kidney issues which might in turn cause other muscle issues.
