Sadler and Sewell back playing Guard is a nightmare situation for us

It's pretty obvious how much better the OL has been once Sewell and Sadler were benched. I couldn't understand what was taking Coach Luke so long to make the move. It was obvious early in the season. I would have benched those guys and played Jacobs at Guard after the Troy game. Now those guys are back. It may not matter much vs Furman, but against SCar and the possible bowl opponent it will be a big problem. Those two guys are a sieve when it comes to giving up interior pressure.

Yep. This crappy season just won’t quit kicking us in the nuts.

I look for Blanchard to get some PT this week.
I heard he could have helped this year but they redshirted him. He could play in last three games and still redshirt.

Dabo would do the team well by ‘risking it’ starting the game with Sadler and Sewell in a rotation at LG and a rotation at RG of Ronan O’Connell, G.Blanchard, and D.Pennington (in that order) throughout the entire four quarters.

O’Connell, Blanchard, and Pennington must be given extensive live game snaps for there to be a shred of cohesiveness (and post-game film from which RO, GB, and DP can learn from their mistakes.

Of course, that won’t happen. The ‘Clemson way’ is to prepare the starters to win the game right in front of them. In this case, it will be Mighty Furman that will require maximum effort for three & 1/2 quarters to vanquish. Then, RO and GB will get garbage time snaps against an opposing DL that is physically limited and will be exhausted.

The usual ‘Clemson way’ of using personnel in a game, even with the opponent being Furman, must never be compromised. ‘Best whoever is in front of you, substitute only when we are ahead in a blowout.’ Even if we’re playing our annual cupcake.

Our OL will already be abused by S.Carolina … even without any injuries. If one of the five OL starters gets dinged up and misses some snaps (or gets a concussion) against S.Carolina, then bith O’Connell and Blanchard won’t be as well prepared to plug the holes and keep the ship from sinking.

Its ridiculous with how bad our oline is that GB

will only get to see action in 2 reg games max. If you’re RS him, get him in 4 games somehow. He will probably need to start next year.

Whether GB sees extensive action vs Furman remains an unknown.

I’m glad that Dabo mentioned GB, O’Connell, and Dietrich Pennington as O-linemen who will probably play. I’d be gladder if he committed to at least two of the three (he doesn’t need to specify which two to us here on TNet) to get extensive snaps vs Furman. Extensive snaps are what matters before the game down there in Columbia.

You can play in 4 regular season games and an unlimited number of post season games and still redshirt.

Cade played in 5 regular season games and 2 post season games his freshman year. One of those games he only handed the ball off in garbage time. Cade could benefit from another year playing college football.

Cade played in 8 reg games and 2 postseason

They are serviceable at guard but definitely going to miss Jacobs and Leigh on the same side. Not sure about Blanchard, but I would assume he is similar to Sadler/sewell. Run game likely wont be as effective, but hopefully with better reads from Randall/davidson with a full season to get the reps, we will be okay. Sadler and Sewell may pass protect a little bit better inside than what they have put on tape when filling in at tackle throughout the year. Definitely not the best outside…so it will hurt but only the game will tell How much.

Yes Sir. Maybe 8-5 after winning the Pinstripe Bowl. Great year. Just fine.

I just want to know who is responsible for Derrick Pennington never playing meaningful snaps as a 4 star monster. Either he was significantly overrated or the coaches couldn’t get it out of him. I think he’s a senior this year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who is responsible? Oh, I dunno, maybe the guys who watch him

I’ve wondered the same thing.

From what little that I’ve seen of him, he struggles to move quickly enough when influence blocking a D-lineman and then getting to the next level to block a LB or DB. Struggles at pulling, also.

DP is also ‘agility challenged’ in pass protection.

(*). However, #55 is also not fleet afoot; he has the same deficiencies as DP.

DP, however, is a force at the LOS when he goes straight ahead (this includes zone blocking when all of the O-linemen block diagonally in the same direction. DP gets on the D-lineman and mives him out of the way to create the hole. The sample size (of us seeing him in action) is small. However, he is a beast when he locks on the the opposing D-lineman (usually a DT).

Neither #50 nor #55 can do this with such overwhelming power.

At the least, I’d like to see us use DP in 3rd & short and 4th & short situations. For pure power blocking, he and Brayden Jacobs are our best.

Luke must have some allegiance to Sadler that I can't figure. As bad as Sadler was on tape all year, it took him getting injured before Luke finally tried someone else. It was baffling.

Sewell/Sadler are human turnstiles.....I still to this day don't understand what Austin saw in them.

Unfortunately, I think our OL vs. SCar DL is the single most glaring mismatch in that game. Stewart, and to a lesser degree, Thomas, are very disruptive off the edges and their interior guys are NFL caliber.

I think we will struggle to run it effectively (no surprise) and Klubnik is going to have to get the ball out quickly, which isn't exactly his strong suit. Riley is going to have to get creative w/ window dressing, misdirection, getting Williams easy touches in the short game, etc.

S.Carolina’s DTs are not special, but neither are they duds.

As for how our OL should be expected to perform against them, it is hard to be optimistic. Not because if any potential lack of effort and heart, but because of ability to play in a not-fully-healthy state. We may have a fundamental ‘lesser ability’ factor with one player who, by all appearances, is a warrior. Rudy Ruettiger types won’t get it done.

Since Elijah Thurman was done for this year, Walker Parks was exposed as a never-quite-fixed necessity at RG. #55 is strong, but agility has been average. Even when he gets his hand on a DT, his block is too-often shed. Thus, we have a liability at RG.

Now, on to #50; I’ve wondered if his injury from last year has impacted him through most of this year. With additional time missed in 2025 because of injury, I strongly suspect that he is not full speed. It adds up to a vulnerability for us at LG.

Dabo better get real and prep those ‘next up’ guys by playing them a bunch vs Furman. Waiting until Ship Clemson is taking in water down there in Columbia before trying out GB or giving extensive snaps to R.O’Connell for the first time all year is not good management of contingencies.
