Remembering the massive Cadillac Sedan Deville.

For my 16th birthday I inherited a clapped out hand-me-down four-door Cadillac Sedan Deville from the early 80s that I didn't find very appealing because 16 y/o Texas boys don't want grandma's car.

But it was free so I accepted the keys with gratitude and commenced tear-a**ing around town in the monstrosity with its gargantuan 6.0L V-8 and wire rims and busted antenna.

The EPA would probably declare a car like that an environmental crime these woke days.

$10/week got me 10 gallons of unleaded at the neighborhood Mobile station. And brother that frigate drank every cent of it. The fuel gauge was top-center of the dash and that amber "E" light would be burning bright by Saturday night.

I used safety pins to hold up the upholstered ceiling. The backseat held anywhere from four to six people depending on their collective girth.

It smelled like old Virginia Slims and cracked leather.

The front seat was ponderous and the only thing that'd keep you from sliding all the way over to the other side when cornering too sharp was the fold down arm rest but if that thing was up, better have a good grip on the steering wheel.

(Because what's a seat belt?)

It had an electrical short somewhere and when that driver side front door would swing open, the radio would cut off. When the door would close, it'd cut back on always tuned to the local classical radio station.

It was fun to take muddin', among other adventures.

I also inherited an 88 from my grandparents. Also, had push pins in the head liner. It was like driving a floating couch down the road. Loved that thing.

Remember the Cadillac Brougham de Elegance? I think it was basically the same car?

Back when car names were luxurious and almost extravagant.

My father's work car was a hand-me-down from my grandfather. It was a 1963 4 door, Cadillac Coupe Deville. It was a beauty. Black with plenty of chrome, and those magnificent fins. Black cloth seats, with white leather accents on the seats, and door panels. It was loaded with all the bells and whistles.

Back when cars had style and personanlity. Now, at least to me, they all resemble each other so much I can't tell one from the other. Or maybe I'm old and don't care to know.

drove around Houston in a white convertible Eldorado with cherry red interior.

It was a fine ride but NOTHING compared to the beauty your Dad had.

In 1972 I got a Buick Electra Deuce & a quarter from my Uncle when he passed. Would have really hurt his feelings to know I only kept it 2 months.

This was my first car in 1976 - handed down from my uncle.

(One exactly like it) 1965 Buick Electra 225 convertible with 445 Wildcat engine.

I hated it then (I wanted a Trans Am), but I'd love to have it now!

Above all else, love and forgive. Understand that people who disagree with you are not necessarily idiots or your enemies. Respect the wisdom of the founding fathers and individual rights and freedoms. Always see the beauty and humor in life.

My best friend in high school had a 1993 deville Sedan and we decked it out with an MP3 player, stereo system, and I put fuzzy dice in the mirror 😂

My roommate had a ‘73 Sedan DeVille. I think that was the year they maxxed out. It was massive with a 500ci motor. We took it to Dallas for the Cotton Bowl in’83 with 6 of us in it plus a pony keg of beer. Plenty of room, and we weren’t exactly small guys.

Yeah those back seats were expansive.

Right before college I inherited an early 70s Chevy Caprice Classic. Bench seats, easily fit 7 or 8 adults. Best of all, fit 6 half kegs of beer in the trunk!

I am a parts manager at a GM dealership. Not only do I remember them from my younger days, I still get people coming in looking for parts for them. Of course, everything from GM is discontinued, but there is proved there is still interest in those old land yachts.

I had a big, long red Pontiac that I had to drive for my drivers license test. I conceded parallel parking because I knew no one could slide that big hunk of metal in between the cones. I actually slide that thing in on the second try. I think the Lord was riding in the back seat.

I bought a new 1973 Cadillac Sedan Deville 4-door, why I don't

remember, because I already had a 1973 Olds Toronado.

That Olds drank so much gas that it would burp when it saw a gas station and fart when it passed ...about eight mpg. The Caddy got about the same. But gas was cheap enough until the oil crisis in 1974, when it caused long lines and the price jumped to about 45 cents a gallon. That's when I got rid of the Olds, thinking, "Who in the helll can afford 45 cents gas?"

Continued to drive gas guzzlers until the mid 80's, when I bought my first Mustang convertible and have driven ragtops ever since. My Camaro SS convertible has a 455 V8, but gets about 25 mpg, which is incredulous to me, considering my lifelong habit of driving two speeds: fast and stop. Now, at 78, few family and friends dare to be passengers, which is OK, because I don't have to listen to screaming! lol

My Daddy had a similar vehicle, the Buick version which I believe was the 225. Daddy called it the "Deuce and a quarter." What he didn't know was that thing had absolute playgrounds for seats, both front and back. Ah....memories, memories......
