Regarding UGA not winning the SEC

Georgia is having a parade Saturday to celebrate their nation championship in football; Clemson is having one to celebrate our national championship in futbol
Did either team deserve to be there? Georgia did not win their conference. Should they have been in the playoff? Deserved or not, they made it, and eventually beat the only team that beat them during the season, Alabama, who finished #2.
Clemson soccer did not win the ACC. We lost to Duke in the ACC semi-final. Both teams made the tournament, but Clemson did not face Duke on its run to the title. Clemson also lost to Pitt and Notre Dame during the regular season. In the NCAA tourney, we did not meet Pitt, but avenged our loss to Notre Dame. Clemson also lost to one team, UNC-G, who did not make the NCAA tournament, and tied another, Georgia State, who did.
I realize that it is "apples to oranges" in a way because 16 teams (technically, 48) make the soccer tournament vs only 4 making the CFP. But it is the Top 16, and the Top 4. I haven't heard anyone argue that Georgia wasn't a top 4 team...only that they didn't win their conference, which should have disqualified them. So should Clemson (and the other 6 ACC teams who did not win the ACC but made the initial field of 48) have been disqualified, too?

I would have been happy to see Georgia excluded, and ecstatic to see them lose after they were included, but I don't buy the argument that they didn't deserve to be there. And I doubt that anyone saying it really believes it, but if they do, I would be interested in hearing why that same principle didn't apply to soccer...or why it didn't apply to the ACC in football a year ago.

It's interesting how we put it on one game. UGA lost the SEC Champ to Bama, so an argument is that BAMA was better and already prooved it. But Bama lost to TAMU, so it's the whole transitive property thing. The only way to fix that is do a true knock out tourney where once you loose you are eliminated from any championship opportunities.

If you think Bama and Georgia would not have been in the Championship game even in an expanded field, you did not watch any games this year.

In a 12 team field, it probably would have been 80% odds that the were the two finalists (assuming they did not meet sooner than that), and 95%+ odds that they would have made the final four.

No doubt. They were unquestionably the 2 best teams this year and UGA is the national champ this year. From a historical perspective, this was a relatively down year for the best programs - Ohio St., Oklahoma, Clemson, L$U (dumpster fire) and even Alabama. Hell, Cincy and Michigan made in in the playoff this year - all the evidence you need to know that it was a down year for the big programs. This year's UGA team would not be favored against last year's Bama or OSU. They would not have been favored against L$U or Clemson from prior yr, etc. Of course, all of this is academic. Timing is everything they say, and UGA picked a good year to have their best roster. Congrats!

particularly in light of how the playoff formats for soccer and football are structured.
Soccer is more like the NCAA hoops and baseball tournaments while football...well...isn't.
Winning a conference championship simply make you an automatic qualifier.

Regardless, the big difference, as you pointed out, is that in soccer, a conference championship is an automatic QUALIFIER, which is not the case in football. And it is not a PREREQUISITE in either sport.

the number of teams in the tournament field. If the idea is to truly select the best 4, 8, 12 (or whatever number) teams to play in the CFP, unless you are going to make the conference champions automatic qualifiers, the only real benefit to having conference championship games is for those team that may need another win to get in.
