Have to go with Grouper. Followed closely by Sea Bass and Halibut.***

I prefer the pink snapper over the red. But I’m not afraid of the red.

Snapper. And they are not endangered. We catch more ARS than Black Sea bass. The feds are crazy and ignorant. I don’t know about commercial fishing. Maybe they do over fish but us recreational guys should be able to keep a few. They are everywhere. We have the new “state waters” law but not sure how lenient the fish police are with that one.

I'm a charter captain out of Charleston and I can promise you there is no shortage of ARS ( Atlantic Red Snapper) off our coast. Have had to move quite often on bottom fishing charters to try and get away from the ARS in order to catch legal fish. I've seen over the past 30 years that it's getting harder to find quality Grouper on a consistent basis compared to ARS.

Amen. Half the spots we go too we can’t get the bait to the bottom b/c of the ars. Makes no sense. Also the regs are the same from VA to Key Largo? Another crazy thing is that I can keep up to 4 swordfish per trip but I can’t keep 1 ars???

Gotta go with grouper, especially if it’s a scamp. Red snapper are great and up higher in the water column which of course helps when free diving deeper bottom spots. We have the same issue with ARS here in the panhandle, I have had to knock them out of the way with my gun to get a clear shot at a grouper before.
