Recruiting

Jan 1, 2023, 3:36 PM

For those that think we should absolutely be in the Playoffs each and every year does that also mean we should be in the Top 5 in recruiting every year? All I hear is we need to fire this coach or that coach but we have been in the Top 5 in recruiting only once in the last 8 years. In that same period we have won 7 of 8 ACC Championships so I would say our coaches are pretty good.

In this era of mega bucks coming in from TV contracts, ticket prices and boosters, all the big time players have facilities out the roof and we are just in that group, not by ourselves. Our coaches have done a fabulous job over the years with the players we have been able to recruit. Take an honest look at the Top 20 in the Playoff rankings and ask yourself what do we have other than our coaches and our academics that the other 19 do not have? If football at any level was easy, the same team would win their Championship every year. That will not happen in college because the great athletes around the country can go to any school and because of that they will go where they can play.

I'd start with........

Jan 1, 2023, 4:01 PM

1. we have a Coach that refuses to utilize the portal to impact his team........doubt many other top 20 programs have that

2. without doing the research I'd venture to guess we have the most inexperienced offensive staff relative to their coach salary ranking in the country.........Dabo is a top 3-5 paid coach in the country..........we EXPECT and PAY for better than what we've recieved the last 2-3 years..........he shouldn't be compared to other TOP 20 programs let alone the rest of the 110 FBS teams.

How much have YOU provided that goes to Dabo’s salary?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What difference does that make?

Jan 1, 2023, 6:49 PM

Who here pays into Dabo's salary and why does this matter on a message board?

Please explain, super curious to hear this logic.

How about some details? “Venture to guess” as opposed to providing details is for loud mouthed doofuses.

Try starting by providing details about a specific unit’s performance with the coach that handles that unit.

As for the portal, which of our current roster player + newly signed recruits do we jettison for a portal player?

Finally, would you enlighten us why some teams that actively utilize the portal (such as big name / big NIL money Miami, TX, and Penn State) are not having the on-the-field success of other active portal users like TN, TCU, and USC?

The portal utilization process has many variables; any idiot can scream ‘use the portal, dude.’

2020: 3rd
2021: 5th

So top 5 twice in the last 8 years. But I don’t want to split hairs because your argument is so misleading.

Clemson’s rise to an elite program was before the transfer portal existed. Dabo’s model worked, nobody would dare deny that. There was the factory model like Bama and Georgia. Then there was the family model like Clemson. And we could compete with them. Our recruiting rankings weren’t always “top 5” because we were signing relatively small classes every year. Our culture was strong and we had very few players transferring out. Plus, we were better at QB than every opponent we played with Deshaun and Trevor.

The transfer portal changed all of that. Alabama, Georgia, and the other factory programs were able to fill roster holes with immediate impact players. Their talent level was too great for us to realistically compete with. Then, non-elite programs were also able to utilize the portal to gain substantial ground on us.

While Clemson continued to fill holes in their roster with developing players, every other program in the country was going into the portal. Our roster suffered as a result. The obvious example in all of this is our WR room.

Justyn Ross and Will Swinney graduated las year. Randall was our lone WR commit and we were after Andre Greene, who ultimately went to UNC. Once he chose UNC, the coaches offered Antonio and landed him. Great. We now had 2 WRs to replace Ross and Will. Then we lost Ajou Ajou and Frank Ladson to the transfer portal. That would have been a great opportunity to go into the portal for an immediate impact WR. Instead, the coaches offered Cole Turner, who wasn’t ready to play until the end of the season. He didn’t help us until the ACCCG.

A hole was created by having 2 WRs transfer. Ladson was a starter too, when he was healthy. Alabama and Georgia would have gone into the portal. Clemson chose not to. I like Cole, but a WR from the portal could have had an immediate impact for us. Our WR room was abysmal this year. We needed to go into the portal. Stubbornness prevented that from happening. The same old model that worked pre-portal prevented that from happening.

Adapt or die.

+1 for nice Factory vs. Family Model Comparison

Jan 1, 2023, 4:30 PM

Nicely stated. Agree with most points, but points to Dabo for finding/offering Cole Turner. Impressive young talent is worth the development wait. The 10-15 local/upperclass/family/grayshirt scholarships are questionable/borderline shady and not value added for me.

Trust me, I like Cole too. But considering that he had zero offers, I’m willing to bet we could have given him a grayshirt offer and allowed him to truly redshirt like Renfrow did.

We needed a WR from the portal. We lost 4, but only signed 3.

You are underestimating the value of wash-one, gray shirts, family, etc etc players to our special teams, with long snappers for FG & punt and for FG holder.

We almost never have miscues in this area despite having what amounts to extended tryouts using enrolled students to see who develops and who wins these jobs.

This is not a flashy use of how to reward a student who survives the competition gauntlet with a scholarship, but the very high quality of play from how we develop and utilize these unsung members of the team is a competitive advantage for us.

Otherwise great FG kickers do not get to be great unless there is extraordinary synchrony and consistency between snapper and holder.

Long snap consistency & excellence is obviously critical for the punt game to be successful. But are you aware that the long snapper also plays a key role in punt coverage? These largely unknown and overlooked players possess the competitive nature and courage to hustle downfield and crash into the opponent’s punt return blockers. The guys who earn the scholarship while playing this role have also demonstrated the athleticism to actually be useful in the ‘attack the punt return team’ role.

All of this makes no mention of the “family” scholarship players that you seem to despise. I’m sure that you wish that Jake Venables (former LB) and Tyler Venables (Safety on our current team’s 2 deep depth chart).

Finally, the walk-one who may end up earning scholarships play an important role in how we manage the number of available scholarships vs the number of not-yet-committed recruits + the number of offered recruits who will end up committing elsewhere (with our coaches not yet knowing that these guys will sign elsewhere).

The use of gray shirts and walk-ons allows the overall roster’s numbers to add up shortly before the season starts.

Our net punting was outside the top 75 teams

Jan 1, 2023, 6:55 PM

guess we needed a better long snapper. =)

I kid, I kid.

no offense to the kids, but an ELITE LEVEL PROGRAM doesn't have guys like turner, swinney, & spector on their 2-deep WR rotation.

I guess that's why we're not ELITE LEVEL anymore

We don’t have a single WR that would start for Ohio State, who’s the new WRU.

Sooo, yeah.

Re: Well put and Spot ON!!

Jan 1, 2023, 6:44 PM [ in reply to Well put and Spot ON!! ]

It’s guys like you who would have never invited Hunter Renfrow to walk on, and who is too blind to recognize that Cole Turner has the athletic ability to be molded into a top end WR that UGA, OH State, and Bama would be glad to have by 2024 or 2025.

We have also had a few highly ranked recruits (sought by other big name programs) that have not lived up to their Billings during the first two or first three years on campus … but have shown enough promise to be major contributors in 2023.

Sometimes, it takes a little for the cooking to come out right.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Danny, you can't defend the WR room.

Jan 1, 2023, 6:58 PM

Cole might be good in time, and Hunter was a great find, but this staff missed a bunch. And yeah, Swinney would not get a snap on most D1 teams, let alone the top 25.

Are you suggesting we shouldn’t adapt and keep running things like we always have? Because we can all admit that college football has changed drastically with NIL and the transfer portal.

You seem to not want to change with it. If so, I hope you are willing to accept Clemson not competing at a national level.

But like Dabo said, if businesses don’t change, they die. Maybe he, and you, should take his advice.

Keep in mind we lost Andre Greene b/c we slow walked the offer based on an outdated philosophy. From what I understand, this will be changing in the future. We could've used Greene this year to go along with Randall and Williams. Thankfully AW, like T Simpson, stuck it out with us.

Our defense was pretty abysmal this year at times.

I’m thinking about the torching that happened against Wake Forest, Notre Dame and South Carolina.

It wasn’t just the QB that was lacking.

Re: Recruiting

Jan 1, 2023, 7:01 PM [ in reply to Re: Recruiting ]

Are you bashing CK2 for his situational awareness deficiencies or the times when his decisions were not correct during the TN game?

Give the kid a break. Our coaches will work more closely with CK2 this coming Spring practice, now that everyone knows that additional coaching in these aspects of QB play are needed.

By all accounts, CK2 is both bright and hard working. He will work hard to correct the ‘muscle memory / impulse’ actions (such as rolling out of the pocket too quickly as opposed to maneuvering within the pocket to buy time) and to realize that the athleticism that allowed him to outrun nearly every HS defender simply won’t work against any college football defense that has a pulse.

Be patient instead of bashing our QB!

Our improving WR corp and OL play will coincide with CK2’s improvement to lead us to another very good season in 2023. We may lose an early season game or two next year, but the future is bright.

I am for the portal. So I am not saying we do not need to use it. Honestly, we needed flexible and athletic receivers to catch screen passes thrown behind them and some that could fall down and act hurt so DJ could catch his breath after his 2 yard jaunt up the field.
